Hi, I am an owner of Cappuccino in Japan for 27 years, and thanks so much for your excellent driving and impression. I know this car is very rare in UK, very limited number of Cappuccino were officially exported, and even in Japan this car is now in the premium trading prices. You are totally right. I also have one of the very few sold Cappuccino here in Germany. I will never give it away and enjoy every time driving on the right side. So all the people ask themself : What is this for a tiny great car
@@N_Jones Totally, Cappuccino has 10 colour variations in his history. Two silvers, 3 reds, 3 greens, one blue and one black. My Cappo is green of 21R, a K6A engine with 5MT type.
I'd be interested to see how much quicker the 1.8 would have been if you'd borrowed the hard top from the 1.6! Having the roof up definitely means a bit less drag, and I've heard that hard tops improve the stiffness a little bit.

Those tyres are Polish brand Debica. They're owned by Goodyear and manufacture their own brand as well as Goodyear, Dunlop, Fulda and few others. They're not bad although not track tyres.
Keep it, and keep going! They are great trackday cars. I had mine rebored to 698cc, forged pistons and had a bigger intercooler. Rays TE37 15inch wheels and decent rubber made it rapid....
As a(U.S.) V8 Miata and AZ-1 owner, utterly loved this video! Next comparison should be done on identical tires, IMHO. I’ll buy Yuki whenever it comes up for sale!
Tyres are from polish maker Dębica. They're decent, although rather budget oriented option and certainly nothing high performance enough to give Yuki an edge obver Miatas.
Brilliant little car, love how u don't even need a full litre of displacement to have fun while driving. Also, the first thing I thought of while watching this video was Initial D, when Takumi raced downhill against the Cappuccino. 😅😄
The tires you have kept on the Cappucino are Polish budget city tires (with all season tread pattern): Dębica Passio. The worst tires imaginable for sport, used only by seniors in their slow commute cars because they are cheap and available in small sizes. Please change them to anything sport-ish and do a timed lap again, you will gain 2-3 seconds easily!
Absolutely loved having Abbie drive these fabulous cars. Well done everyone who put their hard work into little Yuki. And Mike, what a great choice you made in the Cappuccino. I love that car to bits.
This was my first thought as he was wrapping up. Suzuki released the Hayabusa in '99, one year after Cappuccino production ended. I can't think of a more appropriate car for a Hayabusa swap. I'd love to see them extend this series with the goal of beating an S2000 and an FD RX-7.
Things i would love to see: 1. Some proper tires on Yuki. 2. A new dyno. I think it should be around 90 to 95 bhp after fixing the rear brake issue. 3. Proper suspension setting with maybe some inputs from Abby 4. Another lap :D
Organize some kind of montain pass experience, or even a battle against a AE86 ^^ Like a tiny road in the montain, where Yuki would be really in its element!
That 1.6 is NOT stock or new OEM performance. It's sitting much lower than stock, is behaving much better than stock on the corners, and the headlight intake opening (not stock) makes me suspect the intake tract has also been modified.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! abbie is back!! great to see her toodling around a track again!! my wife is totally ok for me finding a cappuccino at some point, she agrees they are adorable and look really fun to drive
"not uprated suspension"? Its viseably inches lower and miles stiffer than stock. Its also got an obvious cold air intake and exhaust the owner "forgot to mention" and no doubt its going to be mapped/chipped to suit. I don't see a problem with that but tell it like it is. It would be interesting to see what that Cap could do with real rubber on it. Maybe cleaning the rust off the brakes aswell if you can find the time?
Give Yuki a boost controller, a new blow-off valve (almost anything is better than the stock BOV), some chassis stiffening, sticky tires, and maybe bigger injectors and a turbo timer. Also, you may not getting the full benefit of the catback exhaust; I'm not sure for the Cappuccino, but the AZ-1 stock downpipe (similar engine) is very restrictive. If that's the case for the Cappuccino, it would be exacerbated with additional boost., so have a look and swap it or bore it out You should be able to hit get past your 100hp target without modifying the engine internals. If you want to go all-out, there are options for oversized pistons, reinforced gaskets, new hoses, etc.
Mike.!!! Tires are the most important thing in improving lap times. If the car can't hold onto the track, it doesn't matter how much power it has or how great your suspension is.
If you stand far enough back at the right angles these Cappuccinos look almost like 90's Viper GTS. It would looks awesome with some white racing stripes and a big T-wing on the back.
Yes, you can. If you swap the early 1.6 cams into the later 1.6 you can get roughly the same power. I can't remember if the later 1.6 had the lower compression pistons that were in the automatic cars as well, but either way, swapping in the earlier cams make a noticeable difference.
I'm not convinced that 1.6 is standard LOL. Pretty sure the exhaust is aftermarket (I suspect MX5 Parts or Cobalt) and it looked too flat through the corners to be on stock suspension. It also has a headlight vent, which is another nod to suggest it's not standard ;). Edit: Also, look at the ride height on the 1.6 compared to the 1.8. I know Mike said towards the end the suspension was new and suggested it was OE but I'm not so sure....LOL Awesome video, though.
I definitely support the idea to sell it and use funds for the V10 mx5 project. If that comes to fruition it would be such a special car. Would shut down so many meets
Haha - that was a very Hammond-esque victory dance at the end there. Cool to see the upgrades making such a tremendous difference. Would b every cool if Uki could go to a fan in the UK!
This goes to show if anything, how important it is to replace suspension on older cars even if they’re not ‘broken’ or leaking. AND how you don’t necessarily need to uprate it; just keep it new and fresh
Do a trackday time attack road show: go set the times in about 10 different tracks like Donnington, Silverstone, Knockhill, Spa, Nurburgring and share the results so everybody can see what Yuki is capable of vs others.
Go full JDM street race mod on it. Wide low profile tires on racing rims, lowered ride height, body kit, tweek the turbo - the works. Make it the worlds smallest super/hyper car.
As for the tires on Cappucino: Dębica is Polish, quite respected manufacturer, subsidiary of Goodyear. I'm... noooot sure if these ones are of type for circuit racing :) Dębica Passio are marketed as economical tires, rather for daily driving.
So much you can have fun with the Cappuccino! Thanks many thanks. Ps. I wish you'd try your hand at doing at least a similar kind of upgrade/mod to the Honda s660
I'm curious how my old street ka compares to a Mk1 mx5, they both have similar power and are a similar size... if only it had so many off the shelf mods.
My dad has two of these, one of which he still dailies. A really lovely car, and can carry a surprising amount of stuff. He also suffers from the rear brakes being a bit stuck! As for what you should do with the car, I think you should maybe sort out the suspension set up a bit, but don't modify it further, because that would destroy its character.
Tire Company Dębica S.A. is a leading Polish manufacturer of tires for passenger cars, vans and trucks. Goodyear is strategic investor. Debica Passio is reliable summer tire for small compact cars.
Great video with an epic result for you. I've had a few mx5s and they're nothing special really, roll in the corners being 1 of its downfalls! The red 1.6 has definitely got some sort of aftermarket suspension on it, it sits a lot lower than the 1.8 and lower than my old mk1 1.6, it certainly didn't seem to roll in the corners either added with the stainless backbox. Rerun the lap times with a stock 1.6 and I reckon you'll see a greater gain over it.

I have a Cappuccino and love it. They are very under rated and priced.
As a(U.S.) V8 Miata and AZ-1 owner, utterly loved this video! Next comparison should be done on identical tires, IMHO. I’ll buy Yuki whenever it comes up for sale!
The shots at 08:18, 08:29 and 08:42 are fantastic. Really give you a sense of speed.
The Cappuccino is also rear-wheel drive, instead of the usual FWD/AWD kei car offerings.
Just had to double check it did indeed say what I thought it said on the tyres. Cheeky work, but I love it (pun intended).
Amazing appearance from Hammond on the sidemen RUclips channel! Loved it
Here from the Sidemen, didn't know Richard Hammond had a channel!
Absolutely loved having Abbie drive these fabulous cars. Well done everyone who put their hard work into little Yuki. And Mike, what a great choice you made in the Cappuccino. I love that car to bits.
Bigger turbo. More Boost. Uprated Suspension. Bigger wheels and wider tires- the list goes on. Yuki is such a cool car, please don't let it end here!
I wonder what it would've been like if this car had a turbo Hayabusa swap?
Frightening ❤
Easy answer there in something that light 8 second quarter mile lol
Absolutely terrifying
This was my first thought as he was wrapping up. Suzuki released the Hayabusa in '99, one year after Cappuccino production ended. I can't think of a more appropriate car for a Hayabusa swap. I'd love to see them extend this series with the goal of beating an S2000 and an FD RX-7.
Hayabusa swap is a no brainer on this car for sure :-)
Things i would love to see:
1. Some proper tires on Yuki.
2. A new dyno. I think it should be around 90 to 95 bhp after fixing the rear brake issue.
3. Proper suspension setting with maybe some inputs from Abby
4. Another lap :D
Organize some kind of montain pass experience, or even a battle against a AE86 ^^
Like a tiny road in the montain, where Yuki would be really in its element!
That 1.8 is 3x the displacement of the 0.6. I know that's basic maths, but it makes you appreciate the impressive performance.
Well done Abbie, really glad you are doing well now, legend!
Arctic cat used the suzuki 660 turbo motor in a snowmobile, the 2006 T660 ST, rated at 120hp stock. And can easily be turned up to 150hp!!
this is the fairy tail ending some of us have been waiting for. great job on Yuki! such a wonderful series.
Great video. That red Mx-5 definitely wasn't on standard suspension!
Nope, I reckon standard shocks with eibach springs or similar.
Mike.!!!
Tires are the most important thing in improving lap times.
If the car can't hold onto the track, it doesn't matter how much power it has or how great your suspension is.
As someone in the middle of restoring a 92 cappuccino- this is SO AWESOME to see. Little Cappi can be fast!
real i’m 18 and it’s my first car!! it’s so cool
9:20 But wait you didn’t control for tyres and rubber?
If you stand far enough back at the right angles these Cappuccinos look almost like 90's Viper GTS. It would looks awesome with some white racing stripes and a big T-wing on the back.
Maybe some stiffer antirollbar on the Suzuki would help a lot
100%!
Worth noting that the earlier 1.6 MX5 is 115bhp.
I wonder if the later 90bhp 1.6 can be upped to the earlier 115bhp.
Yes, you can. If you swap the early 1.6 cams into the later 1.6 you can get roughly the same power.
I can't remember if the later 1.6 had the lower compression pistons that were in the automatic cars as well, but either way, swapping in the earlier cams make a noticeable difference.
So happy to see Abbie back!
I was on a track day years ago and one of these showed up with a bike engine fitted, it was very fast and looked like incredible fun.
Great to see Abbie back and giving it the beans.
I love Drivetribe simply because it’s all the random car content I never knew I needed
The hardtop on the 1.6 will help mazzzively with the handling and the import mx5 where a lot quicker than the UK models.
I know Mike said towards the end the suspension was new and suggested it was OE but I'm not so sure....LOL
Awesome video, though.
Nice, the Red Miata looks like its on different suspension than the 1.8.
Yep, I see the same thing, noticeably lower than the 1.8. The 1.8 looks (and behaves) like stock suspension and sway bars
They would probably handle the same except abit more Torque from the 1.8@@Flatpick4269
4:00 dębica kinda legendary polish tire company now budget part of goodyear. back in my childhood we had only Dębica or Kormoran on our fiat 125p
Great to see Abbie back!!!
I definitely support the idea to sell it and use funds for the V10 mx5 project. If that comes to fruition it would be such a special car. Would shut down so many meets
Those are Polish tires from a company called Dębica in Dębica, Podkarpacie voivodeship.
Haha - that was a very Hammond-esque victory dance at the end there. Cool to see the upgrades making such a tremendous difference. Would b every cool if Uki could go to a fan in the UK!
I’d say you can go on a road trip with Yuki, like the boys do with the cars
This goes to show if anything, how important it is to replace suspension on older cars even if they’re not ‘broken’ or leaking. AND how you don’t necessarily need to uprate it; just keep it new and fresh
Debica tyres are of the better economy brands out there
I've never even seen a Cappuccino in the US, but I've driven several iterations of the Miata and loved every one.
Do a trackday time attack road show: go set the times in about 10 different tracks like Donnington, Silverstone, Knockhill, Spa, Nurburgring and share the results so everybody can see what Yuki is capable of vs others.
Great to see Abbie is back
Always great to see Abbie
Go full JDM street race mod on it. Wide low profile tires on racing rims, lowered ride height, body kit, tweek the turbo - the works. Make it the worlds smallest super/hyper car.
Great to see Abbie again!
MX5 videos from both DriveTide and Overdrive. Nice. (Abby needs to race Scott)
As for the tires on Cappucino: Dębica is Polish, quite respected manufacturer, subsidiary of Goodyear. I'm... noooot sure if these ones are of type for circuit racing :) Dębica Passio are marketed as economical tires, rather for daily driving.
All that work to tie a stock Miata. Well done! Guess I won't be selling my Miata today. :)
I struggled through half of this before I realized it was just a translation. Felt like I was back in high school for a minute...
I think you should do a tour to stelvio pass. Take lots of cars below 1000cc like a Smart Brabus, Honda Beat, AutoZam, Daihatsu Copen.
So much you can have fun with the Cappuccino! A really small shot of Nitrous Oxide? a "larger" battery (check weight distribution, and put it where it's more favorable) and electric (yep a one that actually can compress the air) "turbo". Or/and get really really creative and make a custom 4 wheel drive Cappuccino (and get great tires)... And make it a one of...
Or just smash a bike engine in with a "smallish" turbo and make it crazy? so many things...
Maybe do a ("West Cluxuruous
I am surprised that Dębica sells tires to the UK
So pumped to see Abby !
Thanks Abbie, you're awesome!
You're runing Dębica tires, it's a polish comapny with a lot of heritage, and since 1995 it's been owned by goodyear
Man this is the one I'd been waiting for... I mean I have been really very curious to find out really how much more power these restricted Kei cars can actually put out and now I know better... Thanks many thanks.
Ps. I wish you'd try your hand at doing at least a similar kind of upgrade/mod to the Honda s660
wheel spacers , semi slick tires and then try :D
Its so nice to see Abby and Mike working together!
I'm curious how my old street ka compares to a Mk1 mx5, they both have similar power and are a similar size... if only it had so many off the shelf mods.
Man id love to see modern kei cars in europe… Such a happy little gocarts
TorqueGT is amazing, this partnership with Drivetribe is spot on
My dad has two of these, one of which he still dailies. A really lovely car, and can carry a surprising amount of stuff. He also suffers from the rear brakes being a bit stuck!
As for what you should do with the car, I think you should maybe sort out the suspension set up a bit, but don't modify it further, because that would destroy its character.
I once carried a xmas tree in mine. Passenger side roof removed, base down in the footwell - easy. A bit draughty mind🤣
@@maleagerlemitee676 Funny that - my dad's done exactly the same thing!
I kinda want to see Yuki take one more run with proper tyres on to see if it can shave a tick off that time.
Given how Yuki behaved in the corners, tyres couldn’t do much unless the ride height is raised as she was bouncing like a kangaroo 🦘 in the corners
the tires are from polish Dębica. They are part of Goodyear conglomerate now.
If you pause the video, the Cappuchino lifts front wheel in corners slightly.
Maybe it should have an uprated rollbar and more compression on damper?
Dębica is a Polish company owned by Goodyear. It's likely that your Goodyear or Dunlop tyres were made in the same factory as this.
So you went to llandow in a kei car but didnt take it around the go kart track 😂 opportunity missed I think.
Glad to see Abbie back on track!!
Love Yuki. Love Cappas! Well done all round 👌
The slow window roll-up was a little bit hilarious
Great to see Abbie back and recovered.
My honda jazz has 100hp and is really fun to drive....wonder what time it would do round here. Plus it's on Michelin cross climates
