It irks me a bit when people describe this as Billie "finally being her real self" or conversely as her "not being true to herself". Most of us enjoy wearing a bold outfit for a night, even if it's not necessarily our usual style. Not every outfit has to be the physical manifestation of our soul, some of them are just fun and feel good to wear.

It makes me so so so sad that as a minor Billie knew the media would sexualize her, so she wore extremely over-sized clothing. God I wish we could just let teenager girls be who they wanted.

    • @-Anjel
      @-Anjel 3 года назад +504

I stopped growing in the sixth grade, I am 175cm or 5'9. I'd get unwanted comments about my looks, even though I was clearly a child, not even a teenager. I wore over sized clothing, and dressed like a boy, and I'd get men tell me how I could make myself more attractive to them, and it did not faze them, when I said I was in elementary school. As a child, to have men, who are a lot larger and older than you, stop you in the middle of a street, just to comment on your looks, leaves a lasting effect.
      Edit
I dressed like a boy my whole childhood, because I felt really uncomfortable with my gender. I knew from a very young age I wasn't straight, but that only ruled out one possibility.
I hated being a girl, and felt a bit more like myself dressed like a boy. All through middle school and high school I wore binders. For a while I thought I might be trans, but I didn't really want to be a boy. To have this huge part of myself, that I didn't understand, and then have strangers point out my gender, and comment on my looks, tell me how to dress, what to do with my hair, did not help.

@@-Anjel Sounds very familiar. I was tiny at that age, looked like child too - a small one. I sometimes dressed like a boy and sometimes more feminine. It didn't matter. My experience was very similar to yours. Grown men still do this - making our growing bodies their business, like how we choose to dress necessarily concerns them and they should get a say. They will corner you to offer their criticism or compliments and expect gratitude, a smile (at least give me a smile! There we go, see? That's better.) They'll do it in groups with no regard for how intimidating they are together. They'll do this any time and any place, but especially if you're alone (Don't be alone, that's not safe! She should have known better. I would never.) The only difference in adulthood is feeling bold enough to openly reject their impositions, regardless of the potential danger in doing so. We are doing better now with teaching our boys, but nowhere near good enough. The work continues and it cannot be up to mothers alone. Fathers, uncles, older brothers and cousins, male coaches and teachers, step it up. Future generations deserve better.

It’s interesting that people call these ‘revealing clothes.’ If you pay attention, she isn’t showing that much skin. These clothes feel guarded and structured to me. Like armor. This shoot contains the contradiction of Billie showing more of herself, while at the same time wearing these protective layers that keep her safe and tight. It feels like her standing in defiance of what is expected, revealing what she wants to reveal, and nothing more.

@ I don't know what OP intended, but for me it's the fact that she didn't let that keep her from finding something she felt confident in, and doing the shoot anyway. Too often, when you're not happy about your body, you get into this mindset of not even trying to look good, as if it was an all or nothing thing. The other end of the spectrum is "settling" and sacrificing your personal aesthetic preference in order to be positive about what you have. It takes a certain kind of confidence to admit that you're not living up to your own standards, and working with what you have but from an angle of reaching for your ideal.
Sure, she could have shown more and turned it into a body positivity moment, but that would have been hypocritical of her if she truly didn't like what she looked like in the end. She's allowed not to like a part of her body. But she didn't let it stop her and think that meant she wasn't beautiful or not model material. Instead, she got dressed in something that played to both her comfort level and her idea of beauty and got out there.
Or I might be completely misreading her because I didn't read the interview, and maybe she explained it better there.
But for me, personally, it was empowering to hear that she didn't have to completely overcome her insecurities before doing what she wanted to do. I would have gone into avoidance mode and not done the photoshoot until I a) lost some weight, or b) learned to like my fat. In either of those cases, my insecurities wouldn't have been a problem, because I wouldn't have had any. It's that she found a middleground and did the photoshoot while feeling insecure that turns this into "run towards the monster" moment.

@@briciolaa I get what you're saying, but I think the reason the OP believes (and I believe) that this is more female gaze than male gaze is due to the fact that Billie feels sexy without feeling sexualized. I think the 50's wifey vibes you're getting is due to the nature of her clothing and hairstyle which are very modern pin-up and the pin-up iconography in the US started in the late forties/fifties I believe.
The main difference between a woman being sexy in the female gaze vs being sexy in the male gaze is that, in the latter, her sexiness is made for the viewers gaze. Billie's standing shots are all straight on and there's no emphasis on a single part of her body, and on the majority of the shots, her face is what draws the most attention rather than her body (it's usually the starting and ending point for me when I'm looking at the images). Often times, when you see a sexy woman through the male gaze, its focusing on one or two specific parts of the body and angling the camera and subject to exaggerate those parts. Legs are a really easy example of this. The photographer could have easily isolated billie's body from her, but they're innately intertwined and she dominates the photo more than her body does.
This photo shoot doesn't feel like it's for anyone other than Billie. She's 1000% sexy, but she isn't sexualized, and for me that's the key factor in the difference between male and female gaze. Ashnikko's music video Daisy is the same in this way if you want to see more examples of the female gaze with sexy women :)
Edit: wow, thanks for the likes yall! Never had this many likes on a reply before haha

I am someone with a curvy body and have always had one. Growing up, it always felt as though my body was either something to be ridiculed or hypersexualized. It made me feel as though my frame was something for everyone else enjoyment but my own. From my love of retro fetish and pin-up styles that I saw on Bettie Page to my love and admiration of Dita Von Teese, lingerie became a haven for me to explore and love my body. So, if anything, I think Billie needs to be supported because it is not easy to be a young woman with that lovely figure of hers. And I see this shoot as her taking her power back and learning how to embrace herself.

I can relate to this. Up until around the time I started college, I always felt like I needed to hide my figure for fear of other's opinions and never really had the chance to form my own opinions of my body. I'm glad Billie was able to have creative control over this photoshoot and emphasize the concept of choice when it came to fashion and self expression.

I relate to this so hard and it kinda makes me sad, growing up around a catholic household, even long dresses were considered too provocative just because of my behind. Picnic dresses were considered infantile and somehow provocative again. Jeans were an even bigger issue, heaven forbid that i wore heels with them. Even jeans fron the mens section (real situation) were too tight to be worn with heels , baggage and all.
It made me angry that people were trying to force me to feel ashamed of my body, but then turn around and be like "why are you depressed, there's no reason" when they founded one of the reasons.
Even now as an adult, my figure or clothing choices cause issues. Of course men stare, im not surprised. But it's the women hate that breaks my heart while enraging me at the same time. Im not even that curvy in comparison to some girls, but just because of my figure , many things i wear get sexualized or ridiculed.

I agree that the shoot played up the concept of pin-up, lingerie, etc... but the context of it in current times is totally different from the past. Ppl like Dita Von Teese for example, is respected and revered because of her perfected, sensual aesthetics. It’s her choice to embrace her sensuality and her body, and I don’t think it’s any different in Billie’s case either.
Maybe she will decide to change her style in the future, wear baggy clothes again, or maybe she will keep on with the amazing style she’s showing us now. The audience doesn’t get to take apart or criticize her for a personal style choice. Let’s reserve our scrutiny for actual problematic behaviors instead.

Not to forget the fact that Billie was a minor not long ago and people would have sexualized, and still did no matter the clothes imagine now. we must never forget she's her own person and no one has the right to judge anyone´s body, especially Billie who showed herself insecure about it several times, so just be happy or keep your opinion if it's not going to bring something good.

A thing that I loved about this photoshoot is how in control it felt. The camera and the shots never felt like they were leering at her, but rather highlighting how she wanted to be seen. It felt very in control and despite the "sexy" clothing, I didn't immediately get the vibe that this was trying to tell us to look at her sexually. She's just existing, and feeling good in herself while doing so. We get to see her exploring herself and how she wants to be seen. It honestly felt empowering knowing that she is the one owning her body, rather than just the industry.

i don't follow billie eilish religiously but i do love her music and thought some of her outfits were really cool. when i saw this shoot, i was a bit shocked at how different she looked but she still looks beautiful. i personally don't prefer this new aesthetic, it doesn't seem to suit her and her music but im excited to see new outfits

I love your comment on this and puting it into prespective with the fashion designers or inspiration behind those corsets. I think it is totally alright for her to experiment, not to mention that they really think about her personality or style while making those garments. I really love her fashion story and it definetly suit her.
The baggy outfits are also nice and she knows how to wear them, not to mention that to me, it seems super comfy :)
Anyway I am glad that she found the confidence to do this, and I must say I am happy for her :) I hope to see and hear more of her opinions!

@@alext3480 And the woman who shame other woman are involved in this message. Woman shouldn't even be against each other in the first place. Though society created a toxic environment where woman feel ashamed of themselves and attack other woman with different figures to try to feel better about themselves. Of course, it is wrong, and I am not justifying it, though if that environment didn't exist you'd see it WAY less.

@Michelle M I can assure you that most women don't tear down each other . The notion that we do is indeed the male gaze perpetuated by the media as well . Yes some women do . But most women are supportive. Also women who do are the victims of the system of society themselves . So stop blaming women for literally everything . And men should start owning up .

Out of everything i have seen change in my 34 years, how women's bodies are discussed has become so different. I fully embrace the idea that women just don't deserve to have commentary forced on them about body shape. Period. This is progress I can fully get behind. Good job on Billie for being so quietly confrontational about it.

These photos are all stunning. The fact that people feel the need to tear her apart because of it is disgusting. These people are the same people that shamed her for wearing baggy clothes and now are shaming her for showing ‘too much’. What is worse is that this was being said about her when she was a minor and now she’s an adult she’s being shamed

Can’t fathom why media keep saying and I quote “she found her true self” when a woman is showing more skin. What about when she didn’t yet reveal anything does that mean she didn’t yet found herself? Who are they to chose which is the real her. Nobody, only the lady chose who she really is. Clothes does not make the person. The person makes the clothes.

First of all, Billie's outfits were AMAZING. I love them!! I love how they look on her, I want them myself even though I'm broke AF, and they are beautiful. Fuck the creeps and the hypocrites. Second, I think the issues that were consequently brought up by the shoot needed to be discussed, and I'm grateful that this shone more light on them. As someone who struggles with their own body image, its really empowering to see Billie try something new and express herself through her clothes.

Heard her music a few years ago...super talented and surprised when I saw a picture of her. Young girl and now she is metaphorically changing into a woman. Shes in control of her...let her be. No one deserves to be judged. I'm 66 and still constantly changing. That's living and being. Period.

To an extent, this reminds me of Christina Aguilera in the early 2000s. "Stripped" wasn't about appealing to the male gaze, but expressing, and exploring one's inner self. It's one of her most personal albums to date. She (along with other singers like Britney) was sexualised at a young age, so kudos to Eilish for how she presented herself as a minor, and I'm sure veteran female entertainers, like Aguilera, are proud of her.

Thank you, Luke! Your fashion knowledge and references are always so helpful in your reviews and discussions.
I love that you tackled this topic. When I first saw these photos of Billie, I thought she looked fantastic. She’s always been stylish, and interesting on red carpets and such, and I found her reasoning for the more bulky styles to make sense a lot of sense, but no one wears the same thing forever.
People freaking out about this seems so weird to me. She appears to have felt ready and in control to make this shift for the shoot and explore these looks with some of her previous brands and new. The Mugler look is iconic in its own right, and it’s a great pairing for her in this context. Ditto the Burberry trench, Agent Provocateur underpinnings, etc. She can dress however she wants, and I’m sure we’ll see her experiment a lot over her lifetime which is exciting.
I hope that she found this empowering and exciting. It’s hard enough for a young woman to figure out how to feel about her body and sexuality, and process external feedback, even without being a hugely famous artist!

I never understood the discourse that came from this shoot. Although my interpretation was only surface level, I just took it as she’s growing up. When I became aware of how empowering lingerie is, truly dressing for yourself and no one else, it felt like I went through a transformation. Something about it made me realize how comfortable I was with my body regardless of the numerous changes it was (and still) undergoing. I feel as if, the people that are “upset” is because she took the power over her own sexuality instead of being dictated when she should show her skin vs. When she should be “conservative.”
