    One thing that you didn't mention. Having all those spare parts. Is priceless. You can fix just about anything on your yacht. There's not one piece of equipment that you regret for buying.....

      I would not have bought the motor mounts through Amel. Amel charged me way too much. I would also have not bought water pumps for things that I could live without - the waterpump for the Anchor Wash. I do have A LOT more spares than I put in the video. I have three bilge pumps, TOO MUCH!! When I took off for the Circumnavigation I bought 10 oil, and Fuel filters for the engine and the GenSet, that was overkill. Just a few things I would change, but yes everyone should ave AT LEAST $10K in spares.

    Please consider doing a series of videos on tips and tricks for Amel sail handling . Such things as use of the mouse, deployment of the poles, tips and tricks with the furlerss and winches. Finally best options for setting up a June preventer. There really is very little information on these subjects outside of the Amel manual, for new and potential Amel owners this information would be invaluable

    Boatparts are insane expensive for some dubious reasons, but having the comfort of spareparts in remote places is invaluable. You do this for pleasure or a lifestyle. Leftovers can be sold when u think of going ashore for good...

      Yes, but they usually stay with the boat. Best. Ken

      Hi Jay, Z and I are currently in Las Vegas, and will be back on board Aquarius Next week. We will be sailing through the Red Sea, and headed to the MED starting in 6 weeks. Should be there by November or December this year.

    That looks like a reasonable amount of maintenance spares and stuff to me!.
    Being broken down and waiting weeks in some isolated area to get a $100 part is incredibly frustrating; you don’t have too many spares.
    And I agree tearing the boat all apart to get at a certain spare part or tool, is a total pain.
    Back in the 80’s I worked on a semisubmersible drilling rig, they had spare parts for everything, including the soft serve ice cream machine in the galley.
    Keeping spares and tools organized requires a good plan but you can never have too many.

      Thanks Edward! I thing I bought too many filters, as they have lasted for 4 years and still have over 3 of each. But, I will use them at some point. Ken.

    It's incredible how much stuff you need to be able to not get stuck without parts. To solve the question, do I have the necessary components, and without the need to search all bins, maybe a straightforward inventory software could help. This was a "valuable" episode. Cheers, thanks for sharing all your experiences.

    Very nice, Ken. We also have similar spares on Skyward that were there from previous owner. Many were rusted or were for equipment no longer on the boat. I removed and the boat raised by 2+ inches out of the water! It is still disorganized, but I love your approach and will do the same. We do keep spares items for our traveler and furlers as well as way too much in the electrical department. I have a spare autopilot GPS, too. Lastly, RIB repair is always helpful. Hose is always nice to have for some reason.

    You didn’t mention spare bilge pump or service kit. Also carry an emergency submersible pump with hose to go out overboard

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад +1

      I have a pice of kit with the biggest 24V pump I could find connected to a fire hose, which is not a spare. I also have 3 spare bilge pumps for the main bilge. But the bilge pump with the hose is not a spare, its for emergencies, and was a requirement by my previous insurance company.

    You should think about getting one spare injector made up. Dont Need to buy a factory one.
    Measure the longest pipe and have a straight pipe made. Cheaper than a factory pre shaped pipe. Then you can simply bend the pipe to suit watever cylinder its needed for. Plus its very rare to need to replace more than one pipe unless none of your injector pipes are clamped together which they all should be.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  2 года назад

      It's tough to find injectors for spares. Usually the companies request that you send the failed injector to them before they send one out to you.

    • @matui6983
      @matui6983 2 года назад

      Sorry, I left pipe out of the first sentence.
      I make up injectors and pipes as spares every day. And yes injectors can be hard to source esp for some Volvos.

    Filters, gaskets, seals, impellers, zincs, oil... all those things I would call 'consumables' and kind of belong in their own category aside of 'spares' that I think of more like 'hard parts'. I don't think anything you mentioned, even the motor mounts, are unreasonable or a waste. I would call you forward thinking, prepared, and smart. The longer you have your relationship with your vessel the more you will develop data history that tells you what fails most frequently, therefore what is the most important to invest in for hard spares inventory. Your consumable inventory is completely appropriate since you know best how far away you will be from reliable suppliers on any given voyage, so it looks like you are stocking accordingly and appropriately. If you were an inshore, coastal only day sailor that goes 'home' every night it would be a different story, but you are blue-water voyager and your preparation shows it.

    I kept my spare impellers zipped to water pump, and fuel filter close to Racor for fast change.
    BTW: what spares you got that you think you should have skipped?

    • @SteelDoesMyWill
      @SteelDoesMyWill 2 года назад

      From what I heard he only said the spare Motor Mounts were a waste. I think its fairly smart to have them, I've seen lots of broken motor mounts on aux diesels but that is usually due to lack of inspection and neglect. He also said some people carry extra injectors but they don't and I can understand why. A diesel that is neglected will have kinds of fits, burps, and other chronic issues... many times the injectors get fouled due to lack of maintenance (fuel filters). I think Aquarius gets the regular inspections and maintenance it needs so its unlikely that they would have a major injector issue. Its all about Risk Assessment.

Sometimes I'm looking for something and finds things I didn't know I have , Well I hate looking or searching through all those things, I get frustrated so it's just easier for me to run out to the store and save time to buy another, I guess out there on that Occean you can run out to the store like that.
