A commenter pointed out a secret I didn't cover in the video: If the skull appears in the starting room, the "BARBUTA" text changes to "LOUNGEWEAR ROCKS". Mysterious....
Could be in reference to the character sprite. They look like a knight, but they could just as easily be wearing pyjamas and a hoodie, or possibly a dressing gown, with the two lower pixels being the eyes.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 "loungewear" is apparently a band in the UFO 50 universe! the credits of caramel caramel credit them as doing the music for the tutorial stage
Really appreciated this video; your commentary was great! I don't think I have the patience required to beat Barbuta so your video was a lovely chance to see what it has to offer to those who put the time in. I think I'll be able to get the little prize for the Garden now!
Part of me thinks this game is really cute and I respect how committed it is to it's DOS throwback visual style. Another part of me want to take this video and make a sarcastic MLG montage out of it.
Hello fellow Touhou fan who is also obsessed with UFO 50 (that’s also me!). One of my favorite things about this collection is how each person is gonna have a different favorite game.
love love love this. I got really hooked as well and understood that there was more secrets after I completed the game with 4 hours playtime. This was nice to see to know what I missed. Thanks
What a surprise this game turned out to be, I never would have expected it to become my most-played in the collection! It's probably gonna get surpassed now that I've hunted down every secret, but still, super impressive for the "worst" UFO 50 game!
very helpful vid, i really like videos that use text commentary, i managed to get to 48 rooms with only minor hints from outside, but then i got seriously stuck so the video was really helpful the ab secret was driving me crazy also i love that you showed the best way to get the cherry at the end.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Played the game for 5-10 min, got the gist but still wanted to see what was hiding in the rest of the game. Thanks so much!!!!
Having managed to fill the inventory and get a cherry clear after about 7 total hours, I decided to finally give this video a watch after having seen it in my recommended for a while. This game really compelled me and I enjoyed figuring it all out for myself, but I felt really stuck on what I could do next. So getting to 17:13 and seeing the first secret I wasn't familiar with, I'm at least glad to see you agree it isn't hinted very well ^^; Well, I'm off to go explore more of Barbuta again! Great work you've done here as well, this video was a pleasure to watch even as someone quite familiar with the game Edit: Heartbroken, having checked the reward and finding an item I already had ; - ; Edit 2: Kept watching the video. I had a strong expectation about what was gonna be in that chest; I really should have realized what my mistake was xd
No wonder you're obsessed with this game, it emulate the specific kind of early 80s adventure game incredibly well Reminds me of Montezuma's Revenge and the Labyrinth sections of Kid Icarus Probably along with some of those 8 bit PC games
Really nice video! The only secret I know of that's missing is that something interesting happens if you meet the skull in the starting room... I had no idea about the unmarked shortcut to the double cannon room! Somehow the non-moving slime was very hard for me to notice (I'd already found the secret umbrella, so I thought the NPC's hint was about that) so on my first playthrough I ended up having to take the invisible ladder! I even solved the AB puzzle, but had no idea where to use the key. The game is very kind that no one puzzle/secret is "required" to beat the game!
I also loved this game but it demanded more puzzle solving than I expected, I got stuck due to the the final invisible blocks before the boss. I didn't expect something like that without a hint. I also reached the altar but didn't think it was the altar, I had no idea how to "pray". I am kinda bummed that it was so short though.
Wow, the only thing i was missing was the path to the blood sword... I thought there'd be more seeing as how I mapped it out, there's 7 rooms that arent reachable at all, but thats pretty much the only thing I missed
That being said, if you count the amount of doors that lead to unique rooms, there's 7 extra rooms, which could theoretically fit even though the game shows its not on the map
On my first playthrough, I completely didn't notice the acid pit, but I did find the invisible ladder due to just noticing that the room above didn't make sense if there wasn't a ladder below. So I tried it and it worked. ...Weird how the "beginner" secret was more difficult for me to solve than the "wtf invisible ladder how would anyone figure that out lol this game sucks" secret was. ...
thank you very much! this was a great game up until a point that repeating the whole sequence was tiresome. Also, that invisible floor leading to the boss is mean...
It seems like there are some spaces on the map that we never go to. Is the current theory that there's just nothing there? Also, I was curious today if anything interesting happened if the skull appeared on the boss screen. And the answer is, not really! The skull just doesn't appear, you fight the boss like normal.
There are a total of seven grid spaces that, as far as I know, are unreachable through normal means. (I wonder if you could get there with Cheat Engine or something, but I haven't tried.) There are also a total of seven "side rooms" that are not marked on the map and are entered via doors, so I think the idea is to suggest that those missing grid spaces are where the side rooms are physically located. I have no clue whether the game is actually programmed that way though.
The NPC at 21:30 is likely the canon hint to understand the switch in the mushrooms room. Notice how he has the same blue tiles in his room. (This is still way too illogical nonetheless in my book)
This is unrealistic! 1982 games didn't have spikes! By the way, nice classic style annotation on the video. Reminds me classic let's plays with text commentary.

The lack of a voiceover here honestly adds so much. Very much in the spirit of the original game! ❤
i would trust you to give me a guided tour of the US tax system. incredible video
lovely tour of barbuta
i dont think i ever wouldve found the more obscure secrets
it was wonderful drawing a map and taking notes while playing it

Amazing guide, I like that you actually explained each room and did it as an natural progression
I love this game, but I can't not know the secrets after getting tired of it. Great vid. Would never cherry again.

Watching this after beating the game and seeing a totally different route through it was cool. Great vid!
I loved this video format. It's so nice to watch and chill

You made such a lovely tour, thank you for the guide.
Thank you! Great help. Very much needed.
If you open the blood sword chest with magic rod in hand, then instead of blood sword you will receive a bat orb. It’s an alternative way to get it.
great vid, felt like I got to experience the whole game
great guide, managed to beat it on my own but not finding the was to get the lever drove me nuts; thanks for making this!
I kept seeing this and not clicking on it. A shame, because this is the most thorough coverage of Barbuta with the least filler.
love the discovery 🎉
This is a brilliant guide, thank you so much

Love the aesthetics here

at least you got 49 more games!
Awesome my man! Really well put together
Ive been drawing myself a map playing this one
Fantastic!
Great video, thanks
I would like to know how to get to the top right corner of the map or the screen to its left.
awesome vid
17:09 I was wondering what pushing that did.
Not all heroes wear capes

Somehow i read the texts with a bored UK London tour bus guides voice.
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
SCAAAAAARRRRYYYY MUSHROOMS
23:00 wait so where does this ledge lead?
I assume the final boss area
If you jump off there, you land next to the NPC that tells you about praying at the altar
@@XANDOAndy ah thx
Are you gonna do this for all 50?
this rocks

Would love it they added this game to steam workshop wo we can get mods and then we can use cheats to see all hidden room stuff liek this.
3 games I wish I could remove all memory of and play again for the 1st time:
Ocarina of Time
Dark Souls 1
motherfuckin B A R B U T A
The NPC at 21:30 is likely the canon hint to understand the switch in the mushrooms room. Notice how he has the same blue tiles in his room.

that invisible ladder was the biggest bs in this game
Do you have any interest in Mortol 2?
