This and The Lost World i feel are two of his most underrated scores...cuz the originals were so damn good and well known...just the most iconic Film composer ever...his scores will live on forever. I love so many Composers but Williams music just more than anyone elses really makes the movies and scenes so much better and memorable
A truly great and totally underrated score. Equal to, if not better than, the first. Much more atmospheric, exciting, whimsical (at times), and intense.
Jaws 2 opening credits theme is intense and emotional.. such a beautiful score.. I get emotional goosebumps everytime I hear it.. John Williams composed 2 masterpieces back to back for Jaws Films..
Oh my goodness!! He is one of my favourite composers of all time. The best jaws movie ever in history, he sure got the goosebumps and the hair on the back of my neck standing with this movie score. Thanks for posting xxx
“Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…” Those were the lines to promote the follow up to the worldwide smash hit “Jaws”. For this that it was a pretty much closed book, the sequel gathered again a lot of people to see it. But, for what ever reason many good ideas from Howard Sackler’s original script weren’t done, or changed into not really satisfying results. Often it is said, that director Jeanot Szwarc was responsible for that. Well, if one takes a look at his “Supergirl”, some similarities regarding the dullness of both pictures get pretty obvious. It was Roy Schneider, the star of the movie himself who is said to have fought often for the rights of the character of Chief Brody, who is pretty much the only interesting person in the movie… maybe thanks to Scheider. The one thing that critics admired, the thing that supported the movie into a watchable one is, of course John Williams’ score. What a task he had, if you think about it: Putting the original, Academy Award winning score to a different level. But as he is John Williams, he flooded the sequel with more themes and set a whole new tone, caused by different and fresh orchestrations. Even the motif of the shark appears often to be more edgy and slashing, got more “teeth” to it and I think that sums up the movies soul: Taken from the base of the thrilling adventure that “Jaws” was, “Jaws 2” is a rather direct, into-the-face slasher film, with focus on young teenagers, which became the standard recipe for horror movies at the time until today. But now let’s enjoy John Williams great score, that is often to be called better, comparing it with its prequel. Well, it is a matter of taste, both are different movies, but it shows how the composer seems to find the right nerve of the listeners… over and over and over again. Enjoy! P.S. If you like “Jaws” and want more, I really recommend you the thrilling novel “Jaws 2” by Hank Searls, who took Sackler’s original script and novelized it… and he did great. It is completely different to the movie and makes a lot, if not even everything better. One could call it “How Jaws 2 could’ve been one of the best sequels ever made”. ;-)
Your comments are interesting and enriching. For reasons of censorship in my country, due to my age, I could not see Spielberg's Jaws, indeed, I watched Jaws II first. I fell in love with the soundtrack and still enjoyed it more than the one written for the first movie. John Williams is prolific. I am amazed at his ability to give more, and more, and more. Jaws II seemed very beautiful on a photographic level and less terrifying compared to the first. I was very sorry not to have seen them in the correct order to compare them more accurately. Thanks Fred. Good job.
Really admire what you wrote! I thought I was just going to read the first few sentences LOL, and thank you so much for the recommendation definitely will check that book out!
I really love this music score so much.....I have often thought that this sort of thing gets overlooked because of what it is from........love it too bits!!!
Favourite moment is always at 1.06 and as Brody says: “But I'm telling you, and I'm telling everybody at this table that that's a shark! And I know what a shark looks like, because I've seen one up close. And you'd better do something about this one, because I don't intend to go through that hell again!”
Thanks for the upload, great soundtrack, as was Jaws of course. May get hold of the Jaws 2 novel, didn't realise it was so different. It's a shame the film wasn't up to the standard of the music.
The fugue theme in the Big Jolt is so brilliant! I’d say maybe even better than the Shark Cage Fugue from the first film, shame it’s barely used in the film though.
Definitely not better than the Shark Cage Fugue. Other parts of this Score are just as good as the first soundtrack i think, but the Shark Cage Fugue is just too brilliant. Both the Theme itself and its Contrapuntal presentation and development in the fugue.
To my ears the original Jaws music creates a sound unique to its picture. JW could not have known it at the time, but this really sounds like a practice round for the superior Raiders, ET and Empire Strikes Back scores. (The End Titles finale anticipates ET, "Sailing" anticipates "The Basket Game" from Raiders, etc.). It doesn't possess it's own sound quite the way the original Jaws does.
I don't normally hear the JAWS 2 theme because I always hum the original. That would explain why I keep bopping my head up and down while I'm listening to this (AWSOME) video.
Jaws 1 and jaws 2 are the best evergreen movies. The big reason of both films are best is Roy Scheider. Jaws 3 the revenge is just okay but some scenes are scary though.
All in all Jaws 2 was not a horrible movie,. Although yes the book is way better. In my opinion there are really only three things in the movie that would had been best left out. One. The burn mark on the shark was a bit lame. And really should had been cut. Two. The shark attacking the helicopter was also a bit campy and more of a stretch than anything else. And the third, and most annoying thing in the movie is Donna Wilks constantly screaming at the end. You actually fine yourself hoping the shark will get her just to shut her up! They really need to go in and dub allot of it out as it gets on your nerves. When ever I watch the DVD of Jaws 2. I not only turn the sound off for the whole end scene. But in my mind I take the scene from airplane and picture when Larry Jr grabs her the kids line up behind him and they all take turns slapping her! 😁
Always liked Jaws 2, have watched it countless times
I like the fact that it was filmed in summer.. the first one was filmed in spring.. people look cold in the first one.

The Lost World isn't a good movie though.. jaws 2 is solid..
A truly great and totally underrated score. Equal to, if not better than, the first. Much more atmospheric, exciting, whimsical (at times), and intense.

Sensational album. Almost as good as the original. John Williams at his finest.

The music is fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing!
Bravo Fred, another great effort on your part. It is greatly appreciated.....Many thanks for your effort.
Como siempre J.Williams genial ,se sale....😊

I agree that this music outshines its film, but I also believe this music outshines the music of the original.

The Poseidon Adventure soundtrack made some of this possible.
Excellent

I hate head bobbers listening to music. Just looks like a chicken pecking at food.
the audio quality of a lot of J.W.'s albums of the 70s was terrific. "Empire" and "Jedi" despite digital technology, didn't sound as good as Jaws 2.
Truth!
Best soundtrack of all time!! Saw it when I was 7 and still to this day won't go in the ocean and I'm 51! 🤣 I'm completely serious. 🎶😰😳😵😲
3.50 min - ❤❤❤
A few seconds in sounds just the same as the silence of the lambs

film wasnt as good as original and 3 was better but good soundtrack all in all
Some very fine music, but not best appreciated in this awful mash up!
