Agreed 💯. This message is especially for those who are even asking someone else over the Internet what camera/lenses they should buy. It’s better that people get the best gear at the lowest financial risk (different for each person’s situation) to determine if sports shooting (or any genre for that matter) is for them and if they can be profitable at it. The 1dx would still meet the basic needs of any of my shoots or work today, and I shoot with the R3 and R5 and all the RF L glass, and honestly my clients probably wouldn’t notice the difference if I switched back. I will keep my cameras since it makes my work easier and enjoyable, but I don’t REALLY need it
I picked one of these up about 6 months ago and it’s become my favorite camera to shoot. Despite its size, it’s oddly comfortable to shoot with. I’m actually considering selling my entire Fuji kit because I don’t enjoy the EVF like I do the OVF. Plus, the 1dx makes anything else feel like a toy. That matters to me.
Have a 1DX and its still my favourite camera to shoot sports with over my R6- love the OVF and the controls are just right for me. plus i have mk1 tele-primes, so i get full mechanical FPS on the 1DX vs 6.7fps on the R6....
Another way to look at this is as second body even if you have an R6 (which I do). The 1D series is the most robust Canon has produced. When I shoot a sporting event I take the R7 and R6 but if the weather looks questionable I take the 7D MII and the 6D MII. But a 1Dx would be much better option over the 6D MII. Hmmm, maybe I should swap one for the other...
Thank you for the video. As a hobbyist wildlife photographer; I upgraded my lens to EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II three years ago. Little more than a year ago; I bought 1D Mark IV for $ 1k from B&H that had a shutter count of 42k. Now, my main wildlife shooting combo is 1DIV + 300mm 2.8L IS II + EF 2x III extender. Selected the APS-H body for the 30% extra reach. Furthermore, I’ve noticed adding a 2x with 300mm 2.8 doesn’t cause noticeable image quality drop. This rig produces a reach of 780mm equivalent of full frame focal length. Moreover, when necessary I can lug around the combo around my shoulder for a while without tripod though, most of the time it sits on a sturdy tripod. Although I departed from the APS-C bodies due to inferior IQ however, retain a 7D Mark 1 and use it for bird flight shots with the EF 400mm f/5.6L mounted on it. It’s light enough to comfortably handhold and the output is not bad. I always use native lenses and extenders. Not much confident on third party glasses. Don’t plan to waste money on the latest fad mirrorless cameras as my gears have tons of shutter life remaining. Rather instead, I make budgetary provisions for wildlife safaris at home and abroad. What do you think about my policy? Thanks again.
I was using a Nikon D7100 for sports, and move to a Nikon D4 and I really like it as a all around camera. The 1dx Mk1 and the Nikon D4 or from the time frame when it comes to Pro "Flag Ship" DSLR's around the 2012 time frame. My plan is to move to a D5 down the road and keep the D4 for a second camera body. I just wish the D4 had a little less mirror click. No doubt it is one of the loudest DSLR camera I have used. But the way it feels in my hand and the natural colors that come out of this 16.2 MP sensor is dreamy. If I was a canon shooter I would be picking up a 1dx Mk1 no doubt, with the thought process of grabbing a 5d Mk1 for stills and secondary camera. I was able to pick my Nikon D4 up for around $600 lightly used. It has some wear on it, but not too bad. Right now with Mirrorless being the default for most Pro's. The used DSLR market is super ideal for folks starting out and trying to get into more Pro bodies of yester year. Great video!!!
I've bounced around the Canon range for years from the 20D, 50D, 1D Mark iiN(superb camera) the 1D iv (meh), 7D & 7D ii. A few months ago I picked up a mint condition 1Dx and it's like going back to the Mark iiN but better. It doesn't miss a shot unless I mess up and even though it's "only" 20mp the image quality is superb. My Sigma 150-600 sport which was decidedly hit & miss on the 7Dii has been transformed and my 100-400L, 70-200 2.8 Lii & 24-70 f4L are all spot on. I don't really need a 2nd body right now but if I did I'd buy another 1Dx without a second thought.
I use the 1DX as my second and third bodies. So for the 70-200 and behind goal cam. My main body is the 1DX Mark2 and all three bodies sometimes get soaking wet and run without problems!
Rob, I agree with what you said here with one caveat-you always mention a "sports" camera, but never say which sport. For example, I just shot a dance recital today. It was a ballet, and the mood lighting was so dark, that I shot part of it at ISO 25,600. Even the 1Dxmki really doesn't hold up with useable shots at that ISO! So, you have to say which sports you mean!
Hi Rob, I'm way down in New Zealand doing the hard yards mostly chasing Rugby - Rugby League -Touch Rugby and Events and anything else that pops up. Back to the 1DX MK1 Camera. I had the famous MK4s back in time .. wonderful camera's by all means, however some lowlife decided to flog them both including other kit. Oh how lucky to have the insurance policy .... you may want to mention that subject to the followers ) Anyway they replaced them with the 1DX MK1 X2 !! And new 70-200 f2.8 EF 300mm f2.8 EF 27 - 70 F2.8 plus others. Two points here .....One is the 1DX MK1 are the bees knees They have never let me down - having pre sets are cool. No moisture ever got past the seals Yes they are heavy but that makes them stale I think anyway ? Both are serviced every year by Canon NZ which I would recommend people do with any high spec cameras anyway. I also recommend to anybody the make sure their camera and gear is covered in their contents insurance plus : make sure camera and lens are covered for total replacement . Thats something I've used from time to time when things get dropped or damaged and due to age canon rights them off as the don't hold parts for toehold models. Anyway cheers from down under
Hey, Rob! I saw your viral video titled (Canon R6 REVIEW after 18 MONTHS of professional use) which has 25K views. I liked this video a lot, after that I watched a lot of your videos and I think your video is addictive.
Love the video :P Partly inspired by your previous videos, I got the 1DX to replace my 7D2. Later upgraded my 6D1 to R6, and enjoy my Canon F4L lenses 17-40, 24-105 MK2 and 300mm. Great allround lenses, even for my indoor sports :D
Back when I bought my 90D (swapped for 7Dii), I should have bought a 1DX Mk1. Would have saved my a lot of head aches. It is still a monster of a machine.
Comparing the best images of both, the 90D wins hands down, but my keeper rate on the 7Dii is about double that of the 90D. Battery on the 90D lasts a bit longer as well. The 90 will clear the buffer faster than the 7Dii as you can shoot C RAW.
I am a huge fan of the 1DX.These are fantastic cameras and have a shutter life of 400,000!!! I can buy a 1DX and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens for less than just buying a R6 body. It's a no brainer especially when I use 2-3 cameras at each sporting event.
Be mindful of batteries and memory card availability when choosing older bodies. Have a budget. Bodies are cheaper than lenses. If you know what you want to do. My amateur suggestion would be to buy the body and a cheap 50mm 1.8 Canon, Nikon, whatever. If you're shooting sports or wedding's, rent the lenses. After you've done a few jobs, buy the lenses.
Rob, I am looking at Ebay from the US. Anything worth its weight is around $1200 USD, minimum ... They must have seen your video and raised their prices, LOL. But at that price, $1200 to the newer technology is, IMHO, the direction only as mirrorless is the future and the old gear will only get older.
MPB Nikon D3s: $634 (Excellent conditions) 50mm 1.8D is $75 Rent 400mm f2.8 is around $400 for a week. That's a $12k lens that gets the shot. Used they're a lot cheaper. Buy 300mm f2.8 or f4 prices range from $200-$800 Finance via KEH and literally pay less than $100mo for the whole kit and likely get a 400mm f2.8 with a spare D3 body. Canon is about the same price wise, but Nikon has better older lenses for sports that are cheaper than Canon. Also your low light performance will be better. You'd only lack megapixels. Use Topaz gigapixel and Denoise if 12mp isn't enough, and it's more than enough for any serious pro level sports.
second-hand market was hopeless in Norway. but that camera is too big for what I want it for. But I see it's better now, but the prices I see for 1DX mark III is insane. 98 000 NOk for a camera and lens. 9 466,80 USD But I see that's not a old camera, but I see Mark 2 is a much better deal. Most don't use ebay in Norway. I've not seen the Mark 1 yet. but mark 2 is 1 159,20USD But as I want a camera to bring with me on mtb rides I want something smaller. So far I am considering something in the size of Sony A7 IV, not sure which camera I will go for. butt See Canon is suing lens makers, so seems like no more lenses for Canon if not from Canon.
shooting pro women basketball with 10 year nikon d4s , amazing photos. my d4s 750€, my lenses may be 2k€ , 100% agree , priority to the lenses . my 135 sigma art is more expensive than my cam.
For someone who considers something cheaper than 1Dx (the best option) should consider that 1D Mark III had at its time big problems with the auto focus in AI Servo mode. Canon delivered software updates, but I would avoid this camera. Who knows if the camera has the latest update.
@@ibtt3259 Not that you may care about an arbitrary opinion, but IMHO as I am in the same spot as you. I have the 7D MK II and it comes down to putting money into legacy equipment, seeing the 1dx on Ebay is still about 1200 for anything decent, that money could go to the newer technology to what the future holds. Legacy is legacy no matter how good it was but that will die off quicker than the new tech. Just .02. I have been agonizing over this as well ....
@@ibtt3259 if it helps I agree with the video if the next step was pro sports photography. I got mirrorless R7 coming from 7D & II because I wanted the autofocus speed and eye detection. The R3 got a significant update (ok it was pulled but will be back), not saying the R7 will but the focus is clearly mirrorless now
a 1DX has a sharper sensor and better AF system compared to an 80D for example, which will give better image quality, megapixel count shouldn't be your main concern.
