baat vo aadhī raat kī raat vo puure chāñd kī
chāñd bhī ain chait kā us pe tirā jamāl bhī
merī talab thā ek shaḳhs vo jo nahīñ milā to phir
haath duā se yuuñ girā bhuul gayā savāl bhī
us ke hī bāzuoñ meñ aur us ko hī sochte rahe
jism kī ḳhvāhishoñ pe the ruuh ke aur jaal bhī
This sher (Couplet) alone made the whole ghazal famous. It has got all the desired feelings to give you goosebumps.

us kī hañsī meñ chhup gayā apne ġhamoñ kā haal bhī

shaam kī nā-samajh havā pūchh rahī hai ik patā
