I keep coming back to this. Such a brilliant tutorial. Would love a sequel where you start with this patch and then go through some ideas for motion sequencing (as you mention at the end of the video).
I've tuned into this video before... but wanted to pop in again for help designing this patch I'm working on and it's helping so much... thanks for the lengthy video and clear explanations!!
Super Helpful! I love that the controls on the minilogue are single purpose so we can set up almost exactly as you have here. Ive never had a music instrument of any kind until I got this, and so I have no education in music at all. I didnt even know you could menu dive and change things.
About to get a Korg Minilogue this week. It's my first synth (at least my first synth that's not a plugin for my DAW), and I'm really excited to start doing sound design with a more hands on approach.
Thank you for explaining every turn of the knob!! I would have not learned anything without you telling why you do certain things because nolw i know how to shape the sound to my liking at each step!!
The minilogue has this very perticular sound to it, you could probobly be able to tell it apart from a crowd of other synths. I read somewhere on a forum that it's because of it's filter being desingned for polyphony, therefore blocking a lot of low-end
I can't judge how good the filter sounds, but having all those crossmod, ringmod, waveshaping options seems really awesome. Think I get one. Very nice videos. Thank you
Hey brother, love the video! and the patch sounds great. In future videos could you maybe give more of a birds eye view on the synth. I do not own a minilogue as of right now, so I am not familiar with the layout of parameters, it would be easier to follow along if I could see exactly what parameters you are changing! Anyway man other then that minor thing wicked vid!!!! Thanks
Made me get back into playing around with my korgi again, thanks for the video man! Any chance you could do a tutorial on more droney/noise influenced patches?
It’s much easier if you are using a DAW, but some of the same principles apply for a dawless setup. If you are just using an analog mixer, I advise you to put your FX on a send but instead of using a return use a channel so you can EQ the return. In a DAW I like to put a high pass and low pass filter in series and then use an EQ with a spectrum analyzer (easy in Ableton with native devices). If you cut where there are resonant peaks it will sound much better. the best plugin for this is something called Soothe. I have used it at my friend’s studio and it’s not cheap but it really helps with this problem.
Reface DX would be way better than the CS for ambient and bell sounds. I prefer the Minilogue for a number of reasons but I tried a Reface DX recently and was very impressed.
FIrst, the camera angle is weird. Makes it hard to see the values of the adjustements. More vertically would be nice. Second, is this a Line Out recording or a microphone? It sounds very distant. Third, Very nice video. I got the Minilogue a month ago but now you awakenned my apetitte to use it more. Nice video. Cheers!
superb !! how would you recommend to hook up a reverb delay device?. I have the Yamaha EMP 100 and I would like to use it with the Minilogue, now is it better to connect the two via output line or MIDI?, and in wich situation would you use MIDI on the Minilogue?. thank you.
You need to connect the audio in order to hear anything. The Midi may give you clock sync for the delay, but the midi implementation on the Minilogue is a bit odd so I am not sure if you could stop it from sending CCs to your Yamaha and accidentally messing up the effects settings.
What's better is pretty subjective. People make great music of all styles with the MicroKorg. It has some advantages over the Minilogue (2 LFOs with more waveshapes, a more flexible modulation routing system, various digital waveforms etc.) but in my opinion its overall sound is not very good. Its not really a matter of analog vs digital, there are great sounding digital synths, but I don't personally think the MicroKorg is one of them. If you are trying to decide between the two the best thing you can do is try them out at a friends place or a store or something. If I had to choose one it would definitely be the Minilogue.
Jamie Pullen there is no such thing as a synth vs synth comparison my friend. the only thing that's important is what you are able to do with whichever synth, or module, or vst that you have to create the sound you love and feel others might also love to hear.
Like in general or in relation to what I'm doing in this video? It's a great synth. Very different from the ML. Will not be able to do anything like what I am doing here. But it will do other things much better.
Check your envelope amount and filter cutoff settings. The lower ADSR is also the pitch envelope for VCO 2. You will only hear its effect if the EG INT for filter or pitch is turned up.
Word. Maybe I'll do a ultra basic intro to synth video featuring the Minilogue and include it in that. Any basic tutorial on ADSRs should be helpful though, it's all the same principles.
I'm not familiar with it but honestly you can make ambient music with anything. It's a mood, a style, and a way of thinking about sound. You don't need particular gear to make it. Best of luck!
Sam Levine nothing I suppose lol. I tend to either start with zero or 100 sustain and then adjust the level and the decay setting based on how I want to play the patch.
Awesome man thank you! Really helpful! Do you think you can maybe make a tutorial on how to make that kind of lead stab/marimba sound from this song: ruclips.net/video/76czD1ny6hY/видео.html ( at min 5:20 for example ). Not exactly the same, but maybe some sort of? Keep on the good work :)
elizabadthestripper Hi, sorry I don't understand your question. Are you asking if this Synthesizer is capable of being connected to a computer? Yes. If you are asking if I am doing that in this video, the answer is no.
elizabadthestripper it's connected to a Mackie mixer and then the outputs of that go to an audio interface which is connected to my iPhone which I am filming with.
@@Flohr Can you recommend any 'how to' guides or tutorials for someone just getting started making ambient/drone music? For the time being I'm trying to stick to hardware.
@@Shoeg4zer I don't know of anything specific. Some good basic rules are long time settings on any parameter that has to do with time, delay and reverb, and keep it minimal (less notes but spread out over longer times). Sorry that my video wasn't helpful for you.
Flohr Hey man, just wanted to thank you for the vid. Im a long time guitar player (mostly metal) and have been getting into synthesis recently, but I tend to struggle with the more ambient stuff because of how different it is. Being a minilogue owner myself, video really helps with learning just how all the different knobs will affect my sound.
It's amazing the amount of sounds you can get out of a synth
Beautiful sound. Very eerie and melancholy too. Thanks for sharing
HOLY SHIT. I lost track of the tutorial. Just sat there listening to these sounds.

One thing ppl don't mention is that the high pass filter on the delay lets you clean up the delay with no muddiness going through. Good tutorial!

Thank you for this tutorial, just got a minilogue and learned so much from you. I go to your channel alot!
I think I will be buying after seeing this, excellent sound design, I dig.
I just got my Minilogue and this was a great video... lots of great information. Thank you!
I was playing Stranger Things in my head while listening to this. Very awesome stuff.
subscribed!...feel really bad about doing so though as right before i did you had 808 subscribers
no way, i was just about to comment, how i changed it from 909 to 910! =0 its a sign!! lol
were both terrible ;P solidarity though

some really evocative sounds and melodies going on... great synth, and great demo, well done!

Sure. Have you checked out my West Coast tutorial? That may help a bit. I can also work on something else when I get a chance.
Daym this was so helpful I learned alot! Thanks for using my request
Yeah I think I covered that in one of my original long videos but maybe I sort of brushed past it. I could do a tutorial on that as well.
that was amazing man, i didnt really feel the minilogue, but after this video i might change my mind, great, cold sound
Thanks for doing this dude , I do enjoy your vids , very helpfully 🎛⚗🎈
Cool glad it helps
Wow! Great tutorial! This is the type of music I like to make! Now I just have to wait a couple more months until my Minilogue comes in!!
Great demo, very good explanation ... some many options, nice sound.
Great sound design-thanks!
This is the channel i was looking for! Thank you master!
Damn, that thing sounds great. Excellent video. Subscribed.
that cross mod stuff is AMAZING
nice explained! thx for the video. which reverb do you use in the video?
reminds me of some pre 90s horror movies like day of the dead pretty dope
great sounds!
Excellent!

nice end result. Good stuff.

What about bell tones?
I've been considering this or a Reface CS for ambient, bells, oddities
Reface DX would be way better than the CS for ambient and bell sounds. I prefer the Minilogue for a number of reasons but I tried a Reface DX recently and was very impressed.
just ordered the minilogue...
i was going to go both the CS & DX and save a few dollars. But Ill go the slow route and pick up a minilogue. Cheers
I want to like the synth but it sounds very metallic to my ears for analogue. Seems to have a bump in the 2K region?
What do you mean by 2k region? For a synth beginner
Woah, I had no idea about the voice sync!!! Sounds are about to get fatter!
Nice textures! Which gen of nanoverbs do u use??
akos bacso the older one
Thanks a million!
Time to make black metal

It's line out. I'm thinking of doing the "silver pen mod" to mark the knobs so it's easier to see the values.
Or you can find little round stickers, stick them on top of the knobs and mark these?
Flohr They are also starting to make replacement knob kits. I saw one yesterday with a set of really slick aluminum knobs for i think $60

there is a lot of first things to do.... :). and it woks.
Is it 8 or 4 polyphony
T.I.N Mateus 4
But 2 VCOs per voice so 8x VCOs total
