Yes you were spot on in mentioning in a casual way "everyone does sacrifices but Tal always somehow manages to win in the end". Most of his games were just extraordinary brilliance. I personally have found that if we are not afraid to lose, we become much better attacking player. And thats why we fail to find attacking players in round robin open tournaments. Because people would love to take a draw rather than take a chance to win. Its all in the mind
I have noticed that it's the mindset which makes the difference between winning aggressively. We all play for points in open chess tournaments and don't just think about playing with our strengths
@@RamKumar-gy9nbI think I more or less understand Tal today, and I'm not just trying to be smarter than anyone by saying this either. My hope is simply that some people may expand their thinking and their own enjoyment of chess. What made him a good player, is that he really and truly "played". Stop and think about what this really means. Its deep and if you get you just get it. Watch his games unfold and the moves fit when looked at in this lens. Chess is too complex for Tal or stockfish to have foreseen the things that came in this game. He's playing and taking it as it comes, with some calculation if it's going to be necessary to play onward. You're on the right track, when you say not afraid to lose, but it's more than that. He's playing for fun, for the thrill, to create, and enjoy the sublime art, and the poetry that emerges when two people create something together in a chess game. When things at some point work out fantastically on their own, when an opponent impresses with the depth of their ideas, ideas that arose in response to the unique game created for the fun of it. It's a beautiful thing, and I think Tal saw it, admired it, and aimed to bring it to life with whoever was willing to play the game to share it with them.
Never seen anything like this before. Going to have to examine more of Tal's games. The blocking move with the bishop on g6 was such a killer outpost for the bishop so early in the game. Seeing those weak squares early and taking full advantage is the name of the game. Nc6++ forking king and queen looked good at first but better yet is Ne6#. Simply amazing. @ 5:23 after Queen takes White Bishop a5, black can give double Check by moving Knight to Ne6 (Discovered Check by black Queen too.).. It's a Checkmate !!!
2:56 In this position, I was thinking Ne5 was the best move. It threatens the black rook and must be stopped with the knight trade. if the knights trade dxe5 opens a threat on the knight , still locking down the kingside and preparing a discovered attack with a future Ba5. Is there something I am not seeing?
4:09 Instead of c5, why not Ba4!! If black takes the bishop, Ne6++. Bus since the Queen is pinned, it cannot flee to a6 and will be taken next move. I saw this in less than 5 seconds. Did I miss a refutation?
06:01 -- wait, isn't *RfD1* ( _instead of_ Tal's *RaC1* ) a *FORCED checkmate in a few moves ??* Weird that he didn't go for the best move, considering how well he'd played until this point... :O .
@4:11 can anybody say why pawn c5 is the best move..??we can win the queen in this move itself right..lyk if we play bishop h5 forcibly pinning the queen..and if the queen takes our bishop, knight e6 checkmates..as queen was the one protecting the e file..we can directly play knight e6#..pls anyone explain why c5 is the best move and bishop h5 isn't!?
Black will happily sacrifice the queen and win the knight because they are already far ahead materially. Pawn c5 ensures that there is an open file to continue the attack, leading to a checkmate.
4:08 why not bishop a5 • it pins the queen to the king and if the queen takes the bishop then kne6# • If black ignores then just take the queen and either knight or pawn takes you just take the D pawn and create a battery with your rook there's a good chance of checkmate after that
In your variation, like the game, Tal is going to give up the queen for three minor pieces, which is considered roughly equal. So you can assume Tal likes the position after c5 better. Why? That's another question, but the game as played reminds me of the old quote my Nimzovitsch, "the threat is stronger than the execution." By delaying pinning the queen, Tal creates a situation where black has no breathing space, and is forced to react to Tal's threats on every move. If, instead, he pins the queen, then the material exhange takes place, and Black has more time and space to play actively. That's my best guess, anyway.
I absolutely love pawn checkmates. Although I play a mid-range bot w three take backs. Still I lose half. Any game that I do over a bad move I consider a tie. Or I resign instead of check mating. Don't want to hurt the bots feeling and have it say I cheated.

you could but after pawn takes knight on d4 you take queen pawn takes back then white take pawn on d4 pawn gos e5 chasing the queen away and open file for bishop as well So basically the line your saying is ba5 exd4 bxb6+ axb6 qxd4 e5 qc3

I've never thought about sacrificing a piece to pin multiple others.. Very cool.

Checkmate !!

Knight to E6 is a double check, and also checkmate as the knight covers the C7 escape square!

Knight to b5 is checkmate
It wouldn't be a Mikhail Tal game without a brilliant move

Igor, great advice!!
at 4:02 p to e5, why didn't Tal play B a5 right away ? He gets the queen right away, or the opponent gets mated with knight check on e6
i agree
After exd4 Bxb6+ axb6 black has 3 pieces for the queen.
Stop! you had me at lamentation
5:22 Knight to b5, discovered check. As the knight now attacks c7, and the bishop was already attacking d8, it's checkmate.
what if knight goes to d7?
Hi igor, can you make a video about 1.b3 vs f5? Thanks
When tal starts sacrificing pieces the only move for the opponent is to resign and have a beer 😂
@ 5:23 after Queen takes White Bishop a5, black can give double Check by moving Knight to Ne6 (Discovered Check by black Queen too.)..

5:25 the best move is knight B3 discover check take the queen.
