    When I’m older I want to work in/with nature and try to make a difference in the world. The fact that you can just find fossils like that is incredible! Collecting things such as shells or rocks is probably one of my favorite things to do at the beach. Can’t wait to do it next time I go!

      @@dianaf6333 I am 16, but I have been wanting to work in the environment or with animals for as long as I can remember. It started out looking like the stereotypical little girl saying “I wanna be a vet and help animals” but here I am over a decade later still wanting to change the world. Although maybe not a vet, but something where I can give back. Ya know?

    Thankyou for creating content, it's refreshing to find something I genuinely like and care about. When I was younger I used to want to be a marine biologist, also finding hobbies in things such as crystals etc. I love finding interesting helpful things out as a lover/collector of fossils and ammonites and hagstones. Perhaps I may have not become anything to do with wildlife in my career but it doesn't mean it has to stop because I'm older. 😌 always loved the ocean, but unfortunately no longer live by it but thankyou for these videos ♡

    If im not wrong both the short and this video were filmed here in Lincoln City. Its definitely an activity all the locals love to do. Especially after the high tides. That's when we get the most rocks on the beach. Many carry kitchen tools to help dig and swift the sand to find all kinds of shells rocks and fossils. Even dogs will be helping owners find things. Lol. Ive been able to find shells in all types of sizes even complete ones where you can hear the ocean. ☺ i have yet to find a fossil. It definitely takes time and patience but its worth it. Btw @jacob colvin, thank you for the helpful tips on where you can more likely find them and how to spot them! I cant wait to go down to the beach and get hunting. 😁

    One question, how did you know the seashell was 20m years old?

  • @buddyzilla4557
    @buddyzilla4557 2 года назад

    That is not it's origional shell but is mostly harder minerals that replaced the majority of the orogional shell when the fossil is made. Just like with larger animals bones, the skeletal/supportive structures of sea creatures like coral, sand dollars, clams, etc can become fossilized as the softer material is replaced with harder minerals. This is the same with petrified trees. This can even lead to fossils of animals made up of different types of mi era's with different appearances depending where they are from and how they formed. Fossilized coral can come from many places and has been found made out of agate and opal. The sandstone material would have filled the cavity of the clam after the animal died, first. As it and the matrix material surrounding the shell was harding, this created a mold. As he shell itself started to break down more slowly due to its tougher material than the animal's soft body tissue; it was replaced/supplemented by other minerals that filled the gaps left within the mold. SOME of the shells origional mineral content may be incorporated in the final product but it is the types of minerals that went into the process at the different stages or the way they appear due to the process that cause the "shell" and the contents inside to appear so different. If you were to break it open (heaven forbid on such a nife specimen) you would likely see the smoother "shell" appearance is mostly surface level. I have found braciopods, horn coral and even a sponge once in upstate New York that can be overlooked because they are made up of the same material as the Matrix rock. These often can have parts that damaged in the fossization process so it appears to meld with the surrounding rock where the animals structure was no longer intact. Burrows are called trace fossils. These can come in the form of burrows, trails and for larger animals; footprints. We also could find these in the same material as odd "vein" like projections on the rock. These could be tunnels an imprints left by seafloor animals but this can sometimes be difficult to differentiate in this particular case as the seafloor material itself could have just taken this appearece do to other factors like shifting currents before fossilized.
