Lower Your Engine Bay Temperatures by 20°-30° for Cheap!

  • Measurements from before I put the spacers in were 174° ambient temperature just before the throttle body, and 170° fuel temp at the fuel. Now, the ambient air temperature is 150°, and the fuel temperature is 140°.
    A true cold air intake would also help with air going inside the engine.

    I did this same thing with my Jag, tested the Fahrenheit with a temp gun, same numbers. Get hood louvers/scoop. Way more effective. My intake temp went from 144 to 103.

      On a vintage track Jaguar I saw that the entire Exhaust manifold and pipe under the bonnet had been wrapped in an effort to lower the temp. It must get hot under there.

    Cool modification Bryan! I hadn't saw anyone do this for years! I looked at a 1967 Plymouth satellite 426 hemi car in a old garage back in 1980, the guy had the hood lifted in the back like that to clear the Rat roaster intake he had on it! Very cool mod! Thanks for bringing back the memory!👍

      That hemi powered satellite must have been an amazing site to see. I had never seen anyone do that before the great race. Most that had a hood that could shimmed did, and it had a noticeable effect when we shimmed the 69 Chevelle.

    I saw a video of an experiment involving hood spacers
    And interesting enough it pulls in air rather than push out air when driving
    At a stand still it’s good at releasing heat but not so good when driving

    • @LunarOutlawsGarage
      @LunarOutlawsGarage  Год назад +2

      Apples to apples with no other changes I got I am showing a significant temperature reduction with the sensors that I have inside my engine bay. But every car has different fluid dynamic properties

  • @yeahnah6468
    @yeahnah6468 Год назад +5

    This mod only improves the cooling at a standstill.
    It will actually reduce the cooling efficiency while driving at speed.
    The bottom of the windshield is a huge high pressure area. Which is exactly why every car uses that point as the intake for the AC/Cabin fans.
    Raising the hood back there will allow air to push in from the back of the engine bay and fight against the air flowing in through the radiator.

    This is great. I have the original 7m-ge version but it runs hot a lot. My question is did you remove the seal on the hood? Basically let more airflow thru? Also what kind of radiator?
    Id love to swap mine one day because its a super clean 1988 AZ car that was garage kept. It just lacks power. Ive seen the 1j/2j/1.5j swaps but the fact you went 1uz route makes me think of so much more. I know a guy that ls swapped his, so i need to find something thatll work for me.
    Have you done much weight reduction? I think theyre 4400lbs which is crazy heavy and im wondering what to do for now to at least get the best out of the 7m NA engine and help stopping distance too.
    Im happy youre doing so much to the mk3. I think theyre the best of the "wedge" cars and to get mine was a dream come true. Now the car guy in me just wants to work on building it up constantly. 😂

    It's an interesting trick for cheap. My only concern is that if you blow a rad hose (or a hole in the engine) your going to get fluid all over the windshield.
    I have a better concept from something I ran into as a business owner/mechanic. A customer with a diesel truck who used it to tow boats across state came in for a power steering pump. I told him I'd get on it when it cooled down. He informed me it was cool enough to get started. I went out and checked, the engine was warm but not so hot I couldn't keep my hand on it. Every I/I boat has a blower to evacuate the air in the engine bay. If you look at an
    I/I boat you will see two scoops on the outside edge of the boat. One facing forward, one backwards. They come in all shapes and sizes. He had purchased two small chrome scoops and mounted them on his hood about 3/4 back. Driver side facing forward, passenger side backwards. This created a ram flow and allowed it to exit through the hood rather than out the bottom of the engine bay. The passenger side being mounted facing back meant anything unwanted coming out went on that side of the windshield and kept the driver side clear. Ever tried to see through an oil coated windshield?

  • @bcbloc02
    @bcbloc02 Год назад +2

    Vehicle airflow is something that is totally overlooked by most people. Build a good ram air intake setup and you can easily have 1psi of boost into your engine at highway speeds.

      @LunarOutlawsGarage  Год назад +1

      100% Air temperature and airflow dramatically change the performance of a car

    • @yeahnah6468
      @yeahnah6468 Год назад

      Hahaha no. You cannot generate even close to 1 psi of positive pressure inside a volume the size of any intake manifold, just by using "ram air".
      I'm happy to be proven wrong if you can provide documented evidence of that claim.

      We had that same problem with the 69 Chevelle on the great race. The full video will come out on Dylan‘s channel, but we used the shimmed hood, a pusher fan and Dylan came up with an idea using a power steering cooler for a fuel cooler. Even when it was 90° you can see condensation forming on the outside of the fuel line going into the Holley. I am going to be installing a fuel line cooler using AN fittings over the winter to help Drop the fuel temperature even more

    • @LunarOutlawsGarage
      @LunarOutlawsGarage  Год назад

      Spending the $34 is a whole lot better in my mind than mutilating the hood hinges. I am also not a fan of vents on the hood if the car can’t live in a garage. Also aftermarket vents that are riveted in look pretty sketchy
