- Hi there! We're Isis & Bertus. A couple of months ago we moved from The Netherland into an old dilapidated farmstead in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy.
This week we had to change our plans multiple times because of unexpected events, but it turned out for the best! We had an interesting visit and learned about dry stone construction, cleaned up another garden terrace, chopped our way through a pile of fire wood, and got new asphalt.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure.

I was completely charmed by the visitor, his wealth of knowledge and his appreciation for the the buildings. Beautiful video. Thank you.
I have to say how beautiful your videos are, just beautiful. I loved the information provided today also the knowledge your visitors had was fascinating.
aaah thank you so much clifford! glad to hear you're enjoying them ❤️
So nice to have former owners give you some history about your property. And advise you on rebuilding your stone walls.
I love the you live with the land not just on it - using the things you have available on hand, like propagating the plants. I appreciate how you just flow with whatever comes along instead of fighting. This is part of what makes your videos a peaceful escape. I look forward to them every single week.
What a fascinating visit from your neighbours. It's very special and precious to have access to people with knowledge of local architecture. As for the leftover asphalt, things run in exactly the same way here in the French countryside... including the gift of a bottle of something to say thank you ;) Have a safe and lovely trip to Belgium/The Netherlands!
Nice to get some knowledge about the place from the previous owners, especially with his knowledge of the stonework.👍
How neighborly! Good hearted Italians to help with the asphalt ! ❤
You're such a great couple AND lucky with the asphalt too
very lucky and very grateful :)
Your videos are so gorgeous, words fail, thank you for sharing your gifts with us ❤️
It was so kind of the former owner to explain the history of the stonework. The farmers who built those beautiful buildings were artists as well as extraordinarily hard working people.
As I watched your opening shots of clearing the vines from the stone wall it reminded me of a vlog I had just watched from Portugal. They were trimming their olive trees using a wheelbarrow to haul the brush, and a commenter suggested it would be much easier to use a tarp to toss the trimmings on, then just gather the corners and drag them away - it might be easier than lifting that heavy wheelbarrow up and down your many terraces.
thank you so much! that was a clever comment that person made! we'll remember is as it will definitely come in handy ❤️ thank you for passing on the idea 😊
Really enjoyed the previous owners visit. He had a lot of useful information.
Thank you for the beautiful video. The information about the stone walls was so informative. For more than 2 years, I have been watching how Martijn Doolaard has been restoring very small stone buildings in an area north of where you are and learning a little bit about how this form of construction is done. It's fascinating to see.
I am really going to enjoy watching your progress.
That 25 minutes went entirely too fast. 😢
What I do when taking woody stem cuttings in season or out is I enclose the pot within a clear plastic bag. This creates a little greenhouse or terrarium for the cuttings. Maintains moisture levels and humidity. I usually get over 50% rooting with this method. Maybe this hack will help you in propagating your cuttings.
Good luck with your wall restoration.
With your work ethic and love you both have for your land, the wall will be stellar!
thank you for the tip! will be giving it a try ❤️
What a great opportunity to be able to speak to the previous owners about the property.
absolutely! we meet with them fairly regularly and it's a really precious relationship to us ❤️
I loved how that old man could read the stones and tell their story. Here in Scotland we too build with stone and we have ‘stane dykes’ that are made without mortar and are used to enclose our fields and are a real art form.
we love the stone walls of scotland ❤️ we went on our honeymoon in scotland 🥰
I can already see the plants growing in the borders.👍
BONUS! I say with the asphalt. Free free free.
I'm sure having this done by a contractor specifically hired for this project would have cost thousands if they'd managed to find someone willing to do a comparably small job. The farmers I used to spend my summer holidays with had a narrow path just around their house done in asphalt about 20 years ago and it cost them 50,000 Euros just for the materials if I remember correctly!
Your property is a real treasure! Your careful preservation is excellent! I enjoy watching the progress!
thank you so much patricia! glad you're enjoying the videos and that you value the slow + careful approach ❤️
Complimenti per il vostro progetto e nuova avventura 😊👍
grazie mille ❤️
Dear Isis & Bertus... I am still absolutely enjoying all your wonderful films. Wonderful new parking space for your VW.
Such a divine appointment for the asphalt to arrive when it did!
Another beautiful video. How lucky to have all that knowledge passed along to you. I am amazed at your linguistic skills, Dutch, Italian, English….. I bet someone ran into that stone wall once upon a time and damaged it.
Life devine
Wishing I had still the energy you two have. We still do a good days work, but it goes slower an d is mor challenging with advancing age. Hope you will be done with the heavy stuff, before your joints hurt! All the best on your journey.
I love the drone footage! Another beautiful video. Thank you!!
What a bargain!
So uplifting! Thank you for sharing
Another beautiful video!! 👏👏
I would be using the miter saw for the smaller firewood 🤭😋🤷🏻♂️
Hello
I love your house it is so beautiful
Enjoy your time away
Andrew 💜💐xx
Are those yellow berries named in german, Sanddorn? If so, you could make a very tasty and healthy Jam from them, lots of Vitamin C, good protection for flu and cold in winter! I enjoy your videos, thank you
You must watch The Corner House Project videos.. A couple bought an old stone house. The woman works very hard like you do. There are older stone walls and buildings that have collapsed and Dawn decides to save the stone walls . I was amazed as she tackled these walls and is doing an amazing job. There is no roof , it collapsed years ago. Dawn wants to prove that she can do the stone work and stops her husband from doing the work. Dawn had no experience at all about stone work. I hope this info. is helpful. I love your videos and the style you both have, Great work and good luck !
What a wonderful explanation of the refurbishment of the rock terrace walls, and the discovery of the vault, as well as the history behind that structure...very interesting .How wonderful that the buildings are 1800's and some stones perhaps from the castle. Great progress on the stairs to the terrace....those spaces are going to be such fun to plan out and create. The asphalt was serendipitous indeed. You are making steady inroads on your property. Wonderful to watch! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Enjoy your trip.❤
thank you ❤️ it was nice! (we're already back 😉)
It is beautiful there …..you are very blessed to live there 😊 thank you for sharing with us.
With pavers comes weeds in between. No matter what you do they will always come. It's a pain to deal with. If you like the look, use regular cement and then have it stamped. Just an suggestion.
Lovely as always! Is it warm enough in the house now that it’s colder weather? The views are so beautiful!
it's not too cold yet - we're having a mild autumn. we turn on the central heating a few mornings a week and the woodstove in the kitchen in the evenings. at the end of the month the temperatures will go down to winter mode 😄
love the insights of the older man, and his mention of "much recent" as 1900s was hilarious
You two people are a joy to follow , l have been following your progress for weeks now and I an impressed by your dedication and planning of a huge project thankyou
Výhled do krajiny máte úchvatný, bych tam jen seděla a koukala.
That was wonderful information the previous owners gave you and a total WOW with the asphalt laid for nothing!! :)
I have had good success with dipping cuttings in honey before placing them in potting mix, interesting about all the stone work and the beautiful niche in the wall pity it is filled with rubbish but saves having nasty things inside I suppose
Have a safe trip. Lovely video.
The gentleman was very interesting he had a lot of knowledge He gave you both information 😎
Your visitor was an amazing wealth of knowledge and experience that will serve you well. What is the name of the castello that he has helped to restore?
Estou maratonando os vídeos de vocês desde o início de sua jornada. Comecei a seguir vocês neste ano. Que jornada linda, Deus abençoe vocês.❤❤
The drive looks so pretty with the curves.❤
I so love your videos, the story they tell l, the beautiful views and projects that are evolving. ❤❤❤🇨🇦
thank you jill ❤️
you have very much impressed me as a women i live in he United States and the only women here that work as hard as you do are farmers wives.
Hi Isis & Bertus, a very Interesting episode in the Cassina story, The former owners who were visiting the property did very well telling how the terrace walls were built a lot of knowledge there, and a great insight into the historical background of the property👍🏻. so now you have a clear view of how to restore the walls🛠. Have a safe trip home to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 + Belgium🇧🇪-Greetings. from Hubertus☮🙏🏻🇳🇴🇳🇱🍀🇮🇹
yes :) he helped us complete the last pieces of the puzzle!
WOW that very nice knowledge sharing
Dat was erg fijn om zoveel over jullie landgoed te horen krijgen van vorige bewoners. Erg Interessant!
Keep the videos coming. I see editing evolving as you mature into the property and the RUclips platform.
I'm curious why you have not painted the front for curb appeal.
The property is definitely special and I can't wait to see the spring transformation as your gardens come to life.
Hi Mike! There are multiple layers to this answer 😄 Firstly, we haven't started on the facade as a pretty facade does not keep us warm in winter. 😉 Secondly - Painting the front would be a disproportionate investment of both time and money (there are MANY square metres to cover, 153 to be precise) for a temporary solution. We plan on removing the plaster and uncover the natural stone. We need to get planning permission for that (yes, that's how things work here in Italy), and so rather than first putting in all the work to paint, we'll skip to getting the final finish on. Addittionally, as the plaster is already wearing off in some places, if we would paint now we would be painting the natural stone and those spots would then later need sandblasting to get the paint off again. We will start to update/replace the shutters hopefully next year - which should brighten things up considerably. Thanks for following our adventure ❤
WOW, what a blessing to get free leftover asphalt!!
Hello friends. In the US folks often use a tarpaulin to move cut vegetation. I enjoy your vlogs, thank you. CH
that's a really clever idea! we'll keep it in mind ❤️
Nice countryside, I loved Italy
Great video as always.
There is a powder rooting hormone for woody plants that works well. I have used it before. I am sure you can get it online and it doesn't take a lot and not expensive.
I use that, it works well. I also make a paste of local honey and cinnamon powder to seal the ends and wounds. It is a natural way to prevent infection and rot.
i want to order some for the next time i propagate plants ❤️ but didn't have time now between unexpectedly receiving these cuttings and the trip to the north.
🥰😍🤩❤🧡💛🙏🙏🙏
What a shame to have to cut down the alloro ( Bay leave) tree…I used to make wreaths out of them for the house,it smelled great and use the leaves for cooking
yesss it is! but there are many seedling baby bay leaf trees growing around it so we'll move those elsewhere and let them grow ❤️
🥰🦋🤩🤓
🥰
Lovely views.
I live in Umbria and love your videos and the love you put into your property and, by reflection, into Italy. The lady's Italian is quite good - wow! bravissima!!
A wonderfully informative episode! So inspiring & motivating!! I believe your cascina is in goods hands 🫶🏻
You need pruning shears/loppers with longer handles. They’ll save your back. It’s another expense, but it’s the one piece of gardening equipment that’s most useful.
What a nice video again.
So important to speak the language of the country you live in.
So kind that the guys did help you with their left over asphalt.
The drone footage is amazing
How wonderful to hear more about the history and craftsmanship of the wall and other structures on your land. I would be tempted to restore the wall back to the original arched vault. What a surprise that the road crew would not just dump the asphalt but would spread and compact it as well!
This was very interesting. What a treasure you found in the older man's knowledge.
Enjoyed
safe trip!
What an aesthetically pleasing video! It seems like each episode is an iteration were you create your own style and I applaud you for it!
The land and gardens are changing as the season changes. I'm really enjoying seeing how the landscapes and views evolve.
I agree with the other comments ( : Have a safe and enjoyable trip!
Amazing experience to have the previous owner share so much of his wealth of knowledge, and amazing luck on the asphalt. You could try growing some of the pyracantha from the seeds.
we've thought about growing them from seed too, but then you don't know for sure if the berries are going to be the same colour - and with 13+ months germination time that is too testing for even our patience 😄
The gentleman’s knowledge was fascinating and by the way , my compliments for your Italian.
thank you! making many mistakes still but learning from every conversation :)
What is the cutting of the small boards for? Were they rotten so they are "firewood"? Thank you for making the video! I enjoyed it.
yes, there firewood! they all have rot and/or woodworm.
A lot of interesting history, and more to uncover. Thank You for sharing this beautiful video ❤
yes, there's always more pieces to the puzzle that is the history of the house ❤️
Great video - lots of beautiful shots in this one.
What a gift it was for you to hear about the history of this place! So much great information about your home and how to bring it back to life. Such a beautiful spot.
every time we meet with them or talk to neighbours we learn more about the history of the house. feels like making a puzzle.
So peaceful, thank you
Buon viaggio !
grazie mille ❤️❤️❤️
I couldn't understand what kind of clipping those were?
I believe she said pyracantha (firethorn)
they are pyracantha! i can't say which variety precisely, but it has orange berries (you can also get them with red or yellow berries).
Thank you ❤❤
