My father was a life long mystical explorer. He passed away 9 months ago and I vowed to read his entire library. I randomly started “mysticism” and it’s so beautiful. I had to know more about Evelyn! Here I AM! Thanks for the video!
Everytime i pick up Evelyn's 'Mysticism' it blows me away. Not only the most lucid, flowing, beautifully written book I have ever read, but she nails the subject matter perfectly. This woman had divine inspiration.
You know you've listened to something good when it generates more questions than answers. I like that Liz opens that up with her affectionate moments of reserve.
Thank you so much for your lecture, very well done. Evelyn became a mystic by her own studies of other mystics and her strong belief in God, whether she knew it on not.
Her writings serve as a beautiful affirmation for individuals who have already embraced a heightened state of awareness, recognizing the divine nature of all things.
I've just discovered Evelyn's work, while searching for Christian Mysticism quotes. I've now downloaded the Practical Mysticism audiobook, in the hope that it will make my spiritual path a bit clearer than it is.
"This little woman" has written a terrible book, "Mysticism", in which she mercilessly devalues religion and puts mysticism in the highest place. She places mysticism above the Holy Scriptures. Mysticism - what is it? A conundrum of imagination and revelation, deception and rapturous romanticism. NO mystic can testify under oath that what he saw in an ecstatic state is true. Mysticism is wonderful, but mysticism is deceptive. Underhill has not written a specialised book on mysticism, but a cheap hymn to mysticism. The book is only good where it quotes people who maintain a critical distance from mysticism, for example Teresa of Ávila.
What an extraordinarily ignorant and puerile comment, full of pompous (authoritiative/perjorative) religiosity. A rather 'empty vessel' i guess. Christian Mysticism has been around since the beginning of Christianity - hence the eradication of the so called 'heretic' Gnostics (eg Valentinus in 182 AD ) by a Church who didn't know the first thing about 'lived' Christianity. That purpose got lost in the Church's translation into a mechanism of thought control and world power, not one of brotherly love, forgiveness, living as the 'lilies of the field' and not caring for tomorrow etc. In truth Mankind is not evolved enough to fully embrace and enact the message Jesus brought us. We fall short due to continually allowing our vices to run our lives and our preoccupations with material gain, status, and self-importance and pomposity ( as your comment attests). Meister Eckhart, possibly the greatest of all Christian mystics wrote in 1295 AD. Is that 'New Age' enough for you? Evelyn's work is a magnificent exposition of the 'transcendant; psychological aspect of the Christian 'philosophy' and not the religiosity and dogma that stultifies the Church. It attempts to reach one's soul so that we can can partake in a direct 'communion' between the mind of Man and God, (of who man was made in his image). No wonder the Church found these ideas dangerous, as it took away the need or necessitiy for them to be sole keyholders and gatekeepers to God and everlasting life.
I love hearing that Evelyn was not an academic but I soul listening. She understood listening and silence. We all have this potential!

I look forward to learning more about her and her teachings.
Great lecture. Thank you.
Very good definition of what mysticism really is !
Practical Mysticism : was her most digestible work and could get you started. Beside being half the size , It gets you started.
Nice book :) I like the bit about meditation although I have some weird/bad experience with it.
Great woman, devout mystic.
That was cool
I'm trying to buy this book, but it's too expensive in my country. 500 reais a book. I hope one day I get the chance to read it.

The bible itself says it's a piece of allegory and jesus himself said to not take things so literally and strictly.
