Simply amazing! Too bad the original craftspeople can't see how you have lovingly given this piece of our history a new life. Hopefully, one of them watches your channel. How amazing would that be if they did and reached out to you. As always, your finished piece is absolutely beautiful!

I love that you restore these old time worn pieces. This especially touched me because I worked as a practice manager for an OB/GYN for several years. Our equipment wasn’t this old but I still appreciate the time you spent bringing the beauty back to this piece that probably served a doctor very well. Your work is spectacular, Barry. Thanks for sharing!

I particularly liked this video. My husband retired as covid interrupted our world. He is a family practice physician and practiced more than 60 years! He had an exam table very similar to the one you are refinishing and other matching pieces to this. They were in very good condition, I can't remember what happened to them, but he used for years! Thank you.

There was a different mindset amongst the builders of yesterday. Time moves on I suppose and the only constant in life is change I accept. The availability of different materials with different qualities and the pairing down to necessity of form over function has form of its own I guess. Still nice to see people like yourself paying appropriate homage to this chunk of artisanry.

Barry, you did something very interesting at 11:40 to create a template for the veneer replacement. Did you invent that technique? I've watched a lot of furniture repair videos online and never seen this before -- it seems like a much better way to hide a patch than cutting straight lines.

The colour is glorious, and I'm extremely jealous of that piece, not that I'd know what to do with it! I have a 1920s upright dental cabinet in my bedroom - all the shallow drawers are perfect for jewellery and accessories. It didn't need restoring , it was in near-perfect condition. I managed to get rid of the medical smell of the drawers and cupboards, but I left the top glass cabinet still smelling of disinfectant, which makes me laugh when I open it :) I love these types of furniture, such a rich history of the medical field, and many make quirky but useful home furniture.

Great stain color. It is always a little odd to see something this old look brand new, it's like being in a time warp. The vinyl really looks new as well.
I at least thought that you have to use a bare metal etching primer before painting, do you know anything about that? Maybe it depends on the type of paint?
Lots of work, but nobody could have done a better job on this.

    • @MadCityModern

@@MadCityModern My brother sanded a fridge and painted it with oil based rusoleum. He did a beautiful job, looked like a factory finish, just with a foam roller. It took about a year and rust came up through the paint, although he removed it completely. That scared me. Pretty sure auto body workers use some stuff over the bare metal before painting.
That etcher is mind blowing. Thanks.

This piece has SO much going for it and you honoured its historic interest with balance of clean, restore, renovate. I’m sure it will still look good in most domestic situations or even a museum, equally.

It’s amazing the ingenuity of the designers of these pieces with the heavy and complicated fixtures they used back then, but they had so much more CLASS than today’s dinky models for the same purpose! What saddens me is to see how furniture makers long ago felt that utility & beauty weren't self canceling. They made furniture beautiful, possibly in spite of, the utilitarian nature of some pieces. Why can't furniture manufacturers of today do that?

Well said. However, a lot of furniture today is very beautifully and expertly handcrafted, but you pay outrageously for it.

This examination table was built when skill, beauty and use all met. What an amazing job you did restoring it.

I introduced my husband to your channel today. I love how your restore vintage and antique and give us a history lesson about the pieces. Thank you for your dedication and inspiration.

It's so sad to see recently that ALL of the content creators I watch ALL OF THEM EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM are depressed with some sort of mental illness. Suddenly they all revealed this at the same time. Maybe it is connected to all of those content creators who become Lords by buying a small plot of land.

Wow. That's a beautiful piece once more! It may not be a piece of furniture one would have in their home, but I really enjoyed seeing something so old and unique brought back to its former glory. Awesome job, Barry. Thanks for sharing this unique story. 👏

I've got to ask ... When you start taking something like this apart, how do you keep all the bits straight? I mean, oh joy! We have 32 bits of wood and 21 pieces of oddly shaped metal, 4 hinges and I have no idea what that is. Now what?
