Jack Johnson: Beat His Opponents In The Ring & The Women In His Bed + His Connection To R Kelly Pt1

  • Jack Johnson was born John Arthur Johnson in 1878, in Galveston, Texas. He was a professional boxer who was nicknamed the "Galveston Giant". At the height of the Jim Crow era, he became the first Black American world heavyweight boxing champion. While in his adolescence, instead of attending school, he went to work to help support his family. He took a number of various odd jobs. Eventually, he vagabonded to Dallas to find work and apprenticed to a man who painted carriages. The shop owner, Walter Lewis, introduced Jack Johnson to boxing, and there was no turning back. He was good at beating his opponents, and unfortunately, he was good at beating women too.
When Jack Johnson became the world heavyweight boxing champion in 1908, the day after Christmas, he accomplished a feat that a black man never had. He loved having that distinction from other black men. And he also loved having the distinction of being able to flaunt his white girlfriends and wives in front of anyone who would look at him.
In this video, which is part 1 of 2 parts, we’re going to take a chronological look at the women who were in Jack Johnson’s life and in his bed and how his relationship with one of them earned him another first black man distinction. At the time I’m recording this video, R Kelly is last, or most recent man to be convicted under the Mann Act - crimes having to do with human trafficking and other offences of a sexual nature. Well, Jack Johnson was the FIRST black man, and 1st person all together, to be convicted under the Mann Act because of his relationship with a white teenage girl whose mother was having no parts of it. We will discuss HER in part 2. But by the end of this video, you will know some information on the woman who had a relationship with Jack Johnson, then she got a lot of money from Jack Johnson and THEN...she became the prosecution’s key witness AGAINST Jack Johnson as he stood trial for Mann Act violations.

I'm a huge sports fan and boxing was my first sport that I followed. 1974's Rumble in the Jungle was the first sporting event I remember. I've read at least three autobiographies about Jack Johnson. For you people who don't know Johnson's story. I encourage you to learn more about him. Johnson was very complex and he had skin as thick as leather to survive in the early 1900's. Challenging white men to fight and dating white women all the while smiling. Gold teeth and all!!!
As a kid, I admired and respected Johnson so much. However, now as an older grown up male. Johnson for all of his accomplishments, really set the early black race back. I won't say to much more. Just read up on him and enjoy and contemplate his life and story.

It was George "Little Chocolate" Dixon (1870 - 1908) who was the first ever Black athlete to win a world championship in any sport and Canada's first boxing Champion, becoming World Bantamweight champion in 1892. The "Old Master" Joe Gans (1874 - 1910), became the first African-American world boxing champion a decade later in 1902 as you've stated.

Next Joe Louis and finally Muhammad Ali. After watching this, I’m wondering why there’s no movie on this man’s life. A few points:
    1) Johnson's life underlines just how rigid and omnipresent segregation was in Anerican society in the early 20th century The color line was fiercely maintained.
    2) Johnson's made unwise choices in female companions mostly prostitutes who saw him as a Good Time and a financial opportunity .
    3) Johnson's choice to prefer interracial relationships to intraracial dating may be tied to his relationships in the past.

At 4:50 in this Jack Johnson video, I note that his autobiography, "My Life and Battles", was "edited and translated" by Christopher Rivers. "Translated"? What in the world does Mr. Rivers mean by that? I presume Jack Johnson, born in Texas, spoke English. So where does Mr. Rivers get off saying that he also translated Johnson's story? I could say more, but discretion is the better part of valor.
