When I was a kid, we had a book of Japanese folk stories that we got from a transfer student we hosted. There was a story about a guy named Sleepy Taro, who slept for years and years, and his mom or the villagers would occasionally come and leave him a rice ball or something, which he’d eat in his sleep. Other kids wanted to be t-rexes and firefighters and astronauts. I wanted to be sleepy taro.

A friend of mine came to a similar conclusion when asked what animal he wanted to be. Everyone else said eagle or tiger or shark or something that would give them some amazing physical capabilities. My friend wanted to be a captive manatee so he could float around eat lettuce and do nothing

As a kid I never really fantasized the idea of being a firefighter, cop or astronaut or anything like that really, just one day (I think around the age 13) when we were going around the classroom telling the teacher what we wanted to be, I just made something up on the spot and said "I want to be a dentist" and ever since then it's just kinda stuck with me. It's a damn good paying career, and it's pretty practical. It also seems like something that i would genuinely enjoy doing.
So what have you done with that info in the one year this comment has aged

When I was little I was ENTHRALLED with the idea of being an astronaut because I was obsessed with Star Wars and had this really cool video tape about what was like to live and work on a space shuttle. Then I saw footage of the Columbia exploding at school one day and then when I came home my folks were watching Apollo 13 and when I walked in it was the exact scene where Tom Hanks is dreaming about all the shit going wrong in the space capsule......needless to say I'm content to be a cook here on Earth now.
When I was a kid, my parents led me to believe that I wanted to be a brain surgeon. Now I just want to be dead.

I grew up learning its not what you want to become, it what you wanna do.
I really like Stamper's breakdown of church as like a social bonding area rather than strictly a place for religion. It was the main reason why I wanted to also be a pastor when I was a teenager
Stamper sound so Philly and I love it. Plus his thoughts on church are refreshing, I remember going boring teachings raised as Irish Catholic.
I think I wanted to be all the big ones as a kid: space man, fireman, and super hero. Settled for graphic designer.

Thisk episode gave me the most autist memory of spending hours making animations in powerpoint. I saw this kid do it in like the 7th grade in the library when the rest of us were being stupid on gaiaonline. I remember him making these two guys having a lightsaber battle and it blew my fucking mind. This was like 2002 i guess. Good times.
I wanted to make comics in elementary and middle school. I made a Captain Underpants ripoff with a flying urinal and a floating mass of flames because my friend knew how to draw flames and was a way better artist than me. There was one with a league of different fictional characters, some of which were Winnie the Pooh, Santa and the Easter Bunny. I completely forget the plot. There was one where a couple of stray animals ( a dog and a cat) found abandoned jack o lanterns and could fly around in them. There was another with a giant radioactive foot that just kinda terrorized a town, there was a part where it kicked a puppy into a soccer goal. I was a weird kid.

I remember trying to make like captain underpants rip-off stories that were like fan fic self inserts with me and my best friend josh.
I wanted to be a Rock n' Roll star Astronaut that fought in ww2 because i played alot of medal of honor and my parents got me a toy guitar that plays cool kids beats when you press the buttons.
I wanted to be an Army guy in highschool, infantryman. I then talked to a shit ton of veterans and went to being a writer instead

I always wanted to make monsters and 3D art and games as a kid. I actually grew up doing that, and now I make a living off of it. I hope my child self is proud of who he turns in to
I really don't understand all of these ideals of how church is just an organized cult and stuff because I too had the experience of like the deacon that was almost like a great uncle who I still visit and all of the priests were so nice to me and it was so nice and it really did feel like a nice peaceful place that's why I don't go to church anymore, my family doesn't go to the one we used to and it feels awkward at a different place like dinner at a friend's house it's just...weird.

I wanted to be a firefighter when I was like 3 or 4 and then a veterinarian, like many girls. Then I wanted to be an english teacher and now a social worker. And at one point I wanted to be a writer for SNL which was my most ambitious. It'll probably change in another few years though.

as a kid who grew up in sunday school, it's honestly the worst fucking thing to do to a kid on sunday morning. Weekends are for sleeping in and letting your kid have a break. As I've grown older tho, I really won't deny that the church people I was with were probably some of the best people I could have been around in terms of just being people.
Love that outlook near the end, some people need to hear that about money.
I wanted to be a graphics designer. But I saw how much they make here and what they put up with so I killed my love for art and graphics design in high school.
I wanted to be a movie director for giant monster movies, an artist, a comic book artist, wanted to be in a rock band (like what my dad is in, but he does song covers), wanted to make video games and now I’m simply a person working in a post office that does art and music as a hobby. My first game I made was on Scratch in high school where you gotta like move your mouse around and touch JPEG ghosts and make them disappear.

When I was like 7 or 8, I wanted to be a Firefighter because my dad is a Firefighter, and I thought it was cool, now that I'msoon going to graduate highschool, I'm aiming towards being an engineer because I love working with technology and computers and all of that cool stuff. I find the idea of creating things to make the world a better place with those qualitie of life machines is what I want to do with my life. (I want to get into mechanical, computer, and electrical engineering specifically)

I never really knew what I wanted to be when I was little. I've only recently found out that I want to go into the air force and do munitions systems. I think I wanted to be an artist at one point but then I realized it was a hard living.

I really disagree with how stamper views church
Like, I’m not religious anymore, but I used to be. And I really think if someone truly believes in the Christian god, then they should care about the eternity of others or they aren’t a real Christian. That doesn’t mean act crazy, but it doesn’t mean enable people to believe Christianity is JUST about community and not your eternal souls.
Again, not a Christian anymore. But I disagree with Christians that kinda write their own rules.
