  • On a mining rig upon Jupiter's moon Io, a classic frontier scenario plays out. Miners go insane, the body count rises, and one man must be manly enough to set things right. Fortunately, that man is Sean Connery.

    I honestly love Outland. Watch it everytime i Marathon the Alien series (as in Alien 1 to 3) right between Alien and Aliens. Something like Outland was really needed. The Alien is supposed to be really friggin rare. So rare in fact Weyland Yutani is willing to spend billions to get their hands on a single specimen. Yet Ripley encounters them every fortnight. So i enjoy a movie in that universe where the Alien just isn't there. Makes it have more of an impact once it does inevitably show up again.

      It's also proper science fiction without the fantasy. No ray guns or space planes zooming around. Gave it a gritty, real-world feel.

    It's quite literally a remake of "High Noon" with Connery in the Gary Cooper role. And I think it's excellently done and entertaining as hell. The great Frances Sternhagen, who passed away recently, is awesome as the doctor.

      @RogueDragon05 8 месяцев назад +6

      That's cause the Western genre isn't about the location or time period like most people think, it's about living on the frontier and being self reliant, where/when that frontier happens to be isn't relevant. You'd still classify something like The Last of the Mohicans or Quigley Down Under as a western even though neither takes place in the west or Firefly and Outland even though they take place in the future.

    • @rockbottom2822

      @@RogueDragon05 Exactly. You pretty much sums it up. The light of civilization mostly isn't nationwide but centered in around big cities. Even today when you travel to certain areas in Alaska like I have have, you still found the people living in the spirit of the old west. It's more out of circumstance and a mindset rather than a timepiece.

    "Looks like Alien" - True, so much so that in my head-canon Alien and Outland (as well as Bladerunner) take place in the same universe. The technology in all three movies seems to be quite compatible, especially in Alien and Outland. Alien's Androids and Bladerunner's Replicants also seem at least a little bit related. So perhaps Replicants are the product of a competitor of Weyland who choose to take a more "biological" route in creating artificial humans. And in Bladerunner they show adverts for moving into outer space colonies and starting a new life - which sounds just like what the people in Aliens or Covenant did... Also tonally all three movies fit quite well together, all three painting the picture of a society in which companies hold even more power than they already do today and who show a common disregard for the lives of "just people".

      Saturn 3 has a similar look and feel so it might also be in the same universe. Kurt Russell's character from Soldier saw action at Tannhauser Gate so it's definitely part of Blade Runner universe. Obviously, Predator is in the Alien universe but Blade Runner and Total Recall are also in the Alien universe with the advertised opportunities of the off world colonies.
      There's more! I, Robot is in the Blade Runner universe with the Nexus series robots but I, Robot is also in the early history of the Foundation series.

    • @realtsavo
      @realtsavo 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@26th_Primarch There's also an easter egg in "Prometheus" in which Weyland ridicules Tyrell in a diary entry (if I remember right). But I agree. Absolutely shared universe, up to a point.

There's nothing to conduct heat away, no gravity for convection, and you're not a good radiator so you'll stay warm for a while. Longer if you're in the light but then you'd get a hell of a sunburn. The big danger is wind shear and airborne debris if there's a lot of air exiting the ship with you. Suffocation followed by freezing and then desiccation. But like falling into a frozen lake, you're not dead until you're warm and dead.

    Love the visuals in this, such a grounded take on a space mining colony. And at least they got their idea from a solid classic.

    It's too bad director Peter Hyams isn't doing much work these days. He does his own cinematography for his films and gives each film their own visual style.

    Oohhh man! Jim Steranko did the comic in the pages of heavy metal in 1983? Maybe before but wow his perspective is spot on in my head.💯 This movie IS highly underrated.

    Whoa whoa whoa....we don't know what happens to someone in Io's atmosphere when their space suit is compromised. Oh and Io is not a dead arid rock, in fact because of the gravitational pull of Jupiter and Europa is surface is molten sulfur. With literal lakes of liquid sulfur and ice bergs of partial solid/solidified sulfur on them. Uh now that I think about it, I am not sure if any where on Io is cool enough for this mine to exist.

    I liked the calm aggression everyone had. I know it's to be like western movies but I would like to think it's that attitude that everyone is trapped in this facility with each other in an all too brittle and expensive environment.

    I always get hooked when this pops up on tv
    The way they’ve gone for a grubby, realistic environment
    The lack of any bombastic superhuman feats and the way Connery plays it as a world weary cop who’s been shunted into a dead end job in the middle of bumblef@ck, nowhere
    Classic western and they thankfully got the vacuous wife out of the way and matched him up the the equally careworn doc (with no silly Hollywood romantic tension)
    Is it a bit ropey with the effects? Yes but they don’t detract from the story
    Plus having Connery face just a few adversaries, keeps it more grounded than the John wick silliness

    Right on. This is my favourite Sean Connery film... outside the Bond movies.
    A perfect western disguised as science fiction.
    By the way, love your reviews.
