  • Conquering Imposter Syndrome: Strategies and Insights
Imposter Syndrome, a pervasive feeling of self-doubt and fear of being exposed as a fraud, affects many, especially those in creative and professional fields. This video delves into the heart of Imposter Syndrome, showcasing how even acclaimed actress Meryl Streep struggles with these feelings. It highlights the importance of vulnerability in creativity and the danger of letting our egos dictate our self-perception. The video offers practical advice for overcoming these insecurities by embracing a learner's mindset, focusing on growth, and employing non-violent communication to objectively evaluate one's work without self-judgment. By acknowledging our true selves and our core skills, irrespective of the field, we can navigate through the oscillation of taste and skill, ultimately reducing the gap between perceived and actual abilities. The speaker, sharing personal breakthroughs and mental strategies, encourages viewers to compare themselves only to their past selves, not to others, as a measure of growth. This empowering narrative urges us to find joy in our journey, emphasizing learning and authenticity over perfection and external validation.

Now i realise I'm pretty good for a self-taught designer. I clearly cannot compare myself to them. I've made massive progress in 3 years. I didn't even know how to use a sewing machine 3 years ago, today I'm making haute couture garments. 🙏🙏

Great timing for this. I just had an album project rejected from Artlist which was a bit of a punt as I've dabbled in music production for a decade and a half and have never tried to monetise it. Put out a video about it, dusted myself down and now I'm onto the next creative project with a bunch of new skills and a 12-track album I wouldn't have finished without taking on the challenge.
That growth mindset has got me through so many 'failed' creative projects and even though I'm not at the standard I'd like to be at with my music, I can look back a decade and see how far I've come.
Thanks for the video Chris and the Futur crew. It's helped me feel like I'm on the right path!

I'm beginning a job as a teacher in a couple of weeks ( audiovisual and photographic design) and I'm kinda scared shitless to start this new career. But lately I've been thinking you know what: this time I am NOT going to make it so hard on myself. I am good enough. No more perfectionism and self doubt. I know lots and lots by working the field for more then 10 years and I'm bringing that to the table and I am here to keep learning. Might as well enjoy that journey.
When is it enough to feel confident and calm about your own abilities and talents, you know ? Damnit this imposter syndrome has sucked me into a good amount of depression before and i refuse to stay stuck in that pattern. While watching this video I was thinking: my god this hits home.... I wish someone had helped me back then and told me this before.
That is why I wrote every word of this down and I feel excited to teach my new students to think this way as well. I love this message, and I know lots of people need to hear this. Wholeheartedly; Thank you.

I coach people to facilitate online. One of the things I tell them to get over many of the hang ups they might have is that it's not about you, it's about them. Once we get out of our own heads and understand that we're all looking for some kind of benefit, help, support or guidance in this crazy world the path becomes a bit more clear. If someone can help them achieve those things, great! Keep em coming. No one thinks about any of those things going around in your mind, that might be stressing you. Keep the learnings coming, Chris. I'm happy to keep listening, on my learning journey.

The best part was the fact that this topic was talked about.
Can't explain how hard it is being self taught (well, watching RUclips tutorials to learn graphic design) and the feeling of "is this right?", "am I getting it right?", "what if it doesn't work out?", "what if after so much time trying to learn... I'm still not good enough?". Ahhh man, so many questions.
Truth is, I've thought a lot about the things Chris has said even before hearing him say them, but it's just like he spoke in one of the videos with Ben Burns where he said, "sometimes we just want someone who we respect, who has more experience than us to give us the go ahead..." (I'm paraphrasing).
Anyway, you guys are a blessing🙇

Thank you so much for sharing this. i had to hear that at this point in time.
It's fascinating how, despite often advising others about personal, professional, and mental growth, I found myself falling into the very trap of feeling unworthy of what I’ve achieved so far. It seems that having accomplished a significant amount up to now has paradoxically made me feel pressured to achieve even greater things, instead of simply continuing to take the next steps and showing up again.
I guess this also stems from the feeling that I am just before a big step, which makes everything I've done so far seem like just a warm-up, even though these achievements are substantial both personally and in comparison to others.
Your insights were a timely reminder for me, and I appreciate it.
keep up the fresh and valuable content.

OMG😮 this showed up at times when I needed it most. Today I visited 157th Annual International show of American Watercolor Society. The reason being one of the paintings in exhibit was mine. I know, It's a big deal to be one of the exhibiting artists. But when I was in NYC admiring other artists' work, I thought the most unsuitable piece of art is mine in the entire exhibit. The other paintings are way better then me, off course those artist are senior and accomplished and this was the first time my painting got accepted, but for moment I kinda forgot that. This video encouraged me to think positively about my work. Even though I am not there, I haven't give up 😊

Thanks so very much Chris, every now and then I run into the darkest forest of Imposter Syndrome but now I can see I am not alone here. The part which really stunned me is 7:12

@7:12 I replayed this a couple times, and each time I replayed this sequence, it made more sense and helped with my own understanding of imposter syndrome.
It sucks, yes. But hearing it outloud, helps make it more manageable.. and palpable
of the struggles it is to be an artist in our own works, and able to work through day in and day out.
No matter what; persistence, we get there to our destination and dreams 💕
