In this project I will show you how to make your own precision gyroscope that not only performs superbly, but also makes a fairly impressive desktop ornament. You will be using a wide range of metal working techniques, using both the lathe and mill drill, and I will also show you where you can readily source the required materials. Хобби
Make sure you check out Chris's channel Clickspring. It's got some of the highest quality and best edited home machine shop projects out there. Cheers Chris!
+Harlequin314159 Thank you mate!
+Harlequin314159 YES! I was wondering the reason of lack of uploads on his channel!
+Clickspring Hi,can I make my frame out of the bronze, will that affect work of the gyroscope since it is heavier? thank you.
Hey Chris am I correct u live in Australia???
Long time fan Chris! Is this your channel (make) or did they steal your content and we should we report them for copyright infringement. Thanks for your incredible content on clickspring by far one of my fav channels.
This is the best video on this channel in a long time. Great work.
+DanieleGiorgino Cheers Daniele, appreciate you taking the time to watch :)
I agree! I never heard of this channel before, I'll check it out!
+Clickspring I agree with Daniele - I'd love to see a Clickspring sub channel!
+Michael Arsenault Awesome! Thanks Michael!
+Jack Williams there is he is making a clock right now very interesting stuff
Wow, exposure on AVE and now on MAKE. Good for you clickspring, you're everywhere (especially for a 'new-ish' channel)
It's great because of my favorite makers, DiResta and Clickspring are two of my favorite, it's weird that MAKE snagged both of them
+JZL003 He made the scribing tool also on this channel but I said the same thing. I'd like to see what a toned down AvE on Make would look like.
+Steven Barnes Yeah although I wonder if a toned down AvE is really possible. What's so great about him is he's brusque but unassuming unlike a lot of machinist videos on youtube
+JZL003 Can't tone down AvE and keep it a good show. The big attraction of his approach IS the non-PC approach to things ;-)
+JZL003 +Steven Barnes +oreubens As in tone down the volume? ;)
If you don't have a reamer, you could make one from the stock that it'll be attached to, that'll ensure a better fit that just drilling. This guy's machines is incredible, love watching him work
Wow, this is fantastic work! Beautifully filmed as well. Projects like this really make me want a bench lathe and mill... can't wait for part 2!
Chris, it's nice to see you expanding out and getting noticed for the great work you do. With the appearance here and the shout out from John at NYC CNC your channel should get a boost. I appreciate your time and effort involved in making the videos as well as your willingness to share your knowledge and experience doing what you love. Thanks mate!
Peace!
+Jeffrey Vastine Thanks for your encouragement and support Jeffrey, I appreciate it :)
I love the centre finding tool tip! I have seen a professional machinist use the same technique.
Your calm can do attitude is awesome
How AWESOME is it to take a piece of stock/scrap & be able to create something as simple yet beautiful as that with just a little craftsmanship. 👍👍👍🇺🇸
Your videos are amazing. As a young machinist I hope to one day achieve your level of knowledge and skill. Beautiful work!
Chris, your work and probably more important - your passion reflects on all the viewers! Can't wait to see part two, and you reaching 1M subscribers in no-time! Cheers!
I don't know what the agreement was here, but it's a bit of a bummer that it's branded "Make" and includes no links at all (clickable in video or description) to Chris's really great channel. Far too often, musicians, artists, makers, and more are asked to do things "for the exposure" when it's not actually giving them any props at all.
Interesting that you jump straight to underhanded infringement, rather than considering Make may have commissioned this work legitimately and may hold full rights. Which is far, FAR more likely.
Indeed, Chris Doms. However I find it galling that they insist on re-titling his videos, sometimes in an incorrect or misleading way (for instance they title lathe projects, where everything is turned, as "Milling ...")
If they don't know what to call it, surely they could ask Clickspring?
Just chill. He's a smart guy - I'm sure he knows how to organise his own channel. Make no doubt paid handsomely for his editing time and plans.
He does say; "i'm Chris from Clickspring" at the end though.
Pete Brown - I'm amused that, for all your ire and your position at the top of the comments, you didn't include a link either. Maybe it wouldn't work? Lets see. This is a link to the maker's own RUclips channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCworsKCR-Sx6R6-BnIjS2MA
Chris' videos are a pleasure to watch and an inspiration to get into the shop and get started.
Excellent tutorial - some great tips and very well produced. Thanks!
Dammit man, Those of us that are addicted to your channel R Jonesing For a freaking Video. I understand it started out for one and now seems to be an obligation. But just know there are those of us in this world that not only Respect your work, The desire I mean , really desire To see you to produce Some more product. We watch a bomb 79 and this old Tony and Alex Steele. Seriously trying keep up with love you guys
As allways Chris, it's a pleasure to follow your machining videos.
Another first class video! I expected nothing less!
Very high quality video! Thank you for taking the time to make this.
I can't get enough of your videos. Awesome awesome stuff.
Excellent work, once again; a joy to watch, thank you. Keep going, you are very good at what you are doing!
+Clickspring It's just mesmerizing watching you create, fantastic work!
Thanks Chris, for the fun project.
This looks great!I simply love the ideo of making a gyroscope!Since I'm kind of a matematician(Don't know if i spelled it corectly not a native English speaker) I love things to be perfect and this is the stuff i wanted to see for ever and I finally found it!
Lathes are the best machines ever, if I had one I would spend he whole day making round things out of metal.
Look up the "Gingery" series of books, theyre from the 20s and detail how to diy a lathe from a drill press, sand casting and metal scrap.
good to see clickspring's videos getting wider appreciation!
It's great that this channel promotes skills that are becoming hard to find. Automation is robbing us of highly useful skills.
You have really thought this through in detail. Excellent work.
awesome work +clickspring man I am stoked to see part 2
awesomness of machining in its pure concept.thumbs up
Great vid again from clickspring. good tips about the machine shop etc and really good explanation as always. Inspired.
+George Harris Cheers George, thanks very much for watching.
Viewing this really wants me to get back into lathing... Just don't have the room to place one. Nicely done, and some interesting tricks of the trade explained. Keep 'em coming.
I have just bought a mini lathe and may make this project. Thanks for sharing
Great idea in using the plug in the center to hold your dividers while marking up the work piece. Looks like an interesting project. Thanks for sharing.
so satisfying to watch
I just love watching when you use a lathe on brass
Awesome as usual. Getting glowing reviews from just about everyone in the RUclips maker scene. AVE and John at NYCCNC are the two I've come across. I only recently upgraded from the SC4 lathe, great machine.
+Sam AvE and John from NYCNC have been awesome with their support, can't thank them enough. Thanks for watching Sam :)
Very nicely done. A skill and tools I wish I had.
Wow! Awesome video love your work clickspring!
+mldewilde Thanks for tuning in mate :)
Love this guys voice
Wow, an impressive build.
starting to make one of these in my machine shop class hope it turns out this well
This is a well done video. I enjoyed watching it and will try and make one.
whitehedr let us know how it goes!
i really like this project i dont know who made this but this awesome continue to post video of this guy
Chris I really want to take you to share your experience and wisdom at here I have watched almost all videos
hi chris,
great video again.
didn't know what you are doing videos for make:
good way to get your work seen by more people.
way to go!
jeff
Very, very, very nice job, guy! Congratulations!
You the man I wanna make one can't wait to see part 2 Alsome video keep up the good work
thanks for such a great video/tutorial!
Oh Chris And his SuperGlue Arbor. Awesome Projects man keep up the good work!
+Ashley Van Steenacker Thank you Ashley, will do. Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Another awesome project. Thank You.
+Elton Topalli Cheers Elton, glad you like it :)
Man this stuff is so cool
Loved watching this video, and will queue up part 2 asap. I have to admit that I missed your signature "I'll see you later" at the end.
Very nice camera work!
Perfect workshop!
wow. I don't have any of these tools, but I'm making a 3 - axis mill/3d printer, and this will be the first project i'll make :D
Great work as usual Chris. Waiting for part 2...
+Jeff Keen Thanks very much for watching Jeff, part 2 out in a few weeks...
I love this. It will make a wonderful flywheel for a steam engine also.
Another solid reason for the 6 hole configuration on the flywheel is that it will concentrate even more of the overall weight on the outer rim of the flywheel.
Really nice video!
looks freaking beautiful, unfortunately I haven't gotten access to a lathe where I usually do all my workshop stuff.
UNBELIEVABLE!
Thank you for sharing your video of making a gyroscope. After I made it I decided to go a step further and made it a 3 axis gyroscope with a stand. I will not say that I made it on a wood lathe or suggest that anyone else do it.
Chris from Clickspring is fantastic. If you haven't seen his channel look up his antikythera mechanism project.
gran video ... buen proceso de mecanizado
FINALLY! A Make video that's not just a silent documentary of some random person doing some random thing.
holy shit, you guys put out a good video
I'm binge watching!!!!!
nice job
Great video, thank you. Where is part two?
Perfect, again... Like :-)
Beautiful
That was sick!
Live Wire i
love the vids, they are done very well. The superglue trick is really neat as well. Thanks for sharing!
thanks I really enjoyed that
Great job looks amazing (I would love to have all the metal shavings left over though😊 lol)
Finally some AWESOME content again
I'm going to make myself one of these
That saw at 2:30 was amazing
woww amazing.
Fun stuff!
Where can i find the datasheets with the measurements to make it? It would be great if you can share them, Thank you and awesome work!!
Hey Chris, tell your local machine shop that if they want to put some of that 3" brass on eBay it will probably sell pretty fast right about now! The 90mm aluminium tube is also very hard to find.
Very nice Click! Once again, you show us skill and creative spirit. When do you sleep??
GET BACK TO YOUR DAMN CLOCK!!!! I want to see it finished. :) Sweet vid!
Clickspring is the best. And Jimmy D.
Amazing video, I've become quite a fan, I can't help notice during the shot of the metal being cut, there is a lot of shavings falling down and can't help but wonder if there are any other projects you can use those for, maybe filling something with the shavings and resin?
+Craig Dick Hey there Craig, great question - I tend to collect the brass shavings wherever practical. It can be sent off to a scrap dealer, but I've been saving mine up for a casting project I want to do next year. Cheers mate, Chris.
Would it be possible to do the milling operation with a lathe by mounting the part at 90 degrees to a bit in the chuck with a milling attachment, then moving the part onto the drill? Then turn the wheel to the next position. Maybe create a holding plate with a shaft and secure the piece with a bolt?
from where can I download the design??
Other then making it look cool. is their any purpose to the 6 holes in the wheel
Hey Chris, I have been watching your videos all year and really enjoyed your clock making series. My question to you is this, do you recommend those mini mill/ lathe to get started with projects similar to this or even clock making? What is your recommendation on starting a home machine shop as far as tools and beginner projects. Thanks again!
What camera was used in to make this video. Beatiful video very nice lighting and colors and nice lighting and camera work. It looks like a 4k video yet only being viewed in 720 but at 50fps. Nice vid.
Nice project. When I was a kid, my dad had a desktop gyro in a two stage precession mount. The main axle shaft was mounted using ball bearings. Did you consider using ball bearings for this project? I have no idea if they would have more or less friction than your cup bearings.
NICE vid as usual! love your video! I find your chanel by the youtube recommend.
Then hear AVE and NYCNCtalk about your video. What a surprize! But that make every sense. Because everybody knows your video is wonderful! keep up! can't wait to see more video from you. (sorry for my poor English)--from a Chinese machining hobbyist. :)
LEGENDARY SUPER GLUE ARBOR
Another top notch video Chris ! Where about in Aus do you live mate ? I'm pretty keen to hit up your local machine shops after seeing the off cuts rack in this video....thanks again mate keep up the good work
+mattgatenby Hey there Matt, it's an awesome rack of stock isn't it! Home is Cairns, QLD. Thanks for watching.
0:46 bottom-left: I caught the cursor!
Nice gyroscope. I can't seem to find the plans on the website you mention in the video. Could you post a link please?
Thanks,
Kerry
+Kerry Harrison Hey Kerry, you can find them at the bottom of this blog post: makezine.com/2015/08/28/watch-benchtop-gyroscope-build/ Thanks for watching.
Clickspring HYPE!
Love this but where's part 2 ?
Like a lot of others, I first saw you on AvE and over the next two evenings watched every one of your videos! :)
As someone trying to get started making machining videos on RUclips I am in awe of both the quality of your work in machining and in videography. Any tips on making good quality videos without quadrupling the time it takes to make a part?
+Chris DePrisco Hey Chris, very pleased you're enjoying the vids mate! Re tips: I really do wish I had the secret to turning out the videos faster.. time machine maybe?
Time spent usually relates to quality produced. Don`t change anything , quality of work and vids is exceptional. keep it up. it is well appreciated.
Ask This Old Tony - he has a time machine.
Hi chris. love the chanel.great work. Im kinda new to the hobby and been a r/c airplane builder for years therefore ive used tons of CA adhesives.anyway just curious if the glue ever let go while turning a part? Im about to give it a go and was just curious. Thanks for all the great vids.
if you dont't build too much heat into the part then you should be fine. good luck :D
