  • The major commercial fishery in British Columbia began with the first canneries along the coast in the late 1800s. The work was hard and the money was good. It was also dangerous work and over the years many fishermen have been fatally injured.
This video, produced with the BC Labour Heritage Centre, tells the health and safety story of this important industry and shares what is being done to make it safer for the men and women who fish today.

My father was in two incidents...one where the boat sank and he nearly lost his life. Extremely dangerous and that food on our table is put there by brave men/women.

Thanks for posting this video.... as a Geography teacher in Ontario, it provides a solid basis for our discussion during our unit on resource(s) development and safety concerns in the profession.

In 1977 I watched our Beachman die while letting go,..... he might be still alive if he knew proper beachline safety methods.
