True, the series went a lot of directions, there was even a kiddy version, which they released right alongside the unbelievably dark and fucked up Twisted Metal Black. Head On wasn't even nearly as fucked up as TMB, honestly, but then they cut that game down a lot, so maybe they couldn't get their fucked up on like they wanted to.

Trashy B-grade fun is a genre that is vastly underrated. Not every show needs to be Breaking Bad levels of good. I hope the show does well so they can get more budget for their FX and writer's room. Plenty of great shows had rough first seasons - and went on to become brilliant.

For someone who's made solely to flesh out John Doe's (and agent stone's) story, yeah she's alright. Their back and fort bickering gets tiring though(but then again some couples are just like that).
I forgave the shoddy CGI just based on the fact that it's the first season of a TV show instead of a big budget movie. The baby seal was the moment I went "Yep, that feels about the right level for this kind of thing."
To be honest, the bad cgi worked for me because the mental images I have of these games are from the PS 1 games. It somehow felt just right. Not to say a better cgi will be a bad choice though.
There's a weird section of comedies that nobody talks about: The ones where the jokes don't make you LAUGH, but the overall vibe is still really enjoyable. There's a couple movies for me that are like that: Comedies that I didn't really laugh at but I enjoyed because I liked the characters and atmosphere despite that. Twisted Metal is right on that line, and occasionally twists into it. Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth was surprisingly enjoyable.
I thought John and Quiet's relationship was written quite well. Fantastic acting on both their parts. In fact, the overall character arcs in the show were strongly written (John's decision at the end). I wouldn't even call it a b-show. There's some genuinely touching, thoughtful moments throughout the show.
With the letdown of some TV shows we've seen this year, Twisted Metal is so refreshing. I was so glad to see something that doesn't try too hard and could focus on being fun and hilarious.
This show was charming as all hell. All of the characters are just pure fun. I have a feeling the show is doomed on Peacock though when I really want to see whats supposed to happen in season 2.

The Twisted Metal show is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it's funny, the characters are likable, and it's not slow. Solid 6.5/10. EDIT: The show exceeded my expectations but has plenty of room for improvement.

The last time the internet changed their mind about a live action video game adaptation this quickly was the first Sonic movie. My personal little conspiracy theory is this: Both the Sonic movie and Twisted Metal intentionally put out bad marketing to stir up attention through outrage because with game adaptations, more people will show up to see how bad it is than they would to see how good. That way the positive response would be obviously confused, but far more genuine, so they'll know whether they should make a season 2 or not.

I binged watched this entire season 1 just today. I have no real knowledge of the video game itself, but I loved the show and I really hope it gets a season 2 because wow, what a cliffhanger.
Well just to let you know, season 1 doesn't follow the games story at all but season 2 looks like it'd be more like the game with the tournament taking place
I recommend watching the intro videos and character endings for Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted Metal Black (my two favorite entries). That'll give you a feel for what the franchise actually is
@@conchamberlain4282 Twisted Metal Black is kind of a departure in tone for the entire series (being pretty much the polar opposite to Small Brawl), it goes into way darker and edgier territory than the series ever actually did before, every turn is incredibly bleak and gritty, often to contrived and hilarious points (yet remaining disturbing and sad), and the previous entries were never anywhere near as fucked up, the tone was a lot less serious. That grim tone colored the future entries, but no other game in the series is nearly as fucked up or hopeless, and there's a good reason for that, but I feel they could have explored it more, which they almost did but eventually decided not to. I think you could make a pretty cool 'anthology' show out of something like that, where each episode is about a given character, or possible a character would get two or three episodes.
This show was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it for what it was. They paid a lot of respect to the franchise, and it had an actual story/lived in world.
I actually don't think releasing 'questionable' trailers is such a bad idea, because if it turns to be good then it subverts expectations in a very pleasant way.

as a 90s kid i loved this show. i was very dissapointed with a lot of my childhood memories being pissed on by the modern standarts of media, but this show got me to my soft spot. not a masterpiece but watching it with friends made me feel like a kid again. i also almost cried at that one moment, you know which one ;)

It's kinda like a prequel to the games, like all the tournament participants knew each other before the first tournament happened. Whereas in just the games only a handful of the characters had some sort of a connection before the tournament.
As someone who has played twisted metal 1, 2, and twisted metal Black, this show did an amazing job implicating the characters, and fleshing out their back story (despite it being slightly innacurate for a couple of characters). I really enjoyed watching it.

Brother i was right there with you when i watched the trailer. I watched the show a couple days ago and had a goofy ass grin on my face most of the time and i am legitimately excited for season 2. Saying its a "stupid world" really sums it up. The world really reminds me of the movie idocracy. It is a stupid world full of stupid people and thats what makes the show enjoyable.
If they get a season 2 it might be a couple of years, but they should have access to the few writers with the chops to be worth keeping around after the strike.

Funnily enough, this weird name conundrum is actually brought up and explained in the show via the newspaper clippings in Kane’s cell
Sweet Tooth was such a great character, darkly funny and a total badass! When I saw that 3rd person view of his missiles flying around I got goosebumps.
Only had a couple issues. Sweet Tooth was the only one to use a "Special" weapon. Even had the laughs that go along with the attack. Was for sure expecting Agent Stone to have the Tesla Coil attack in some way. Also being shown all the drivers that they did. Without showing their mode of transportation. This season at the end came across as a set up season. If the second season has more car combat. Then it will make up for any short comings from the first season.
He truly had the guts to admit he was wrong and thanks for reminding about the Halo one. 💀 The show is actually so enjoyable to watch. And Samoa Joe does a Awesome Job being Sweet Tooth, he had Awesome Moments.
I watched the show with very minimal expectations but would go on to say the show understands Twisted Metal more than you think they do and for that it ended up being a really good time, I hope this show does well enough to get another season
This was quite the surprising show, met up with a couple of friends yesterday and one mentioned he started watching this show so with a lack of ever knowing about the original games we decided to give it a shot cause what the hell. ended up blasting through the whole season in one night cause we had a lot of fun with it. solid 7/10

Haven't watched it yet but twisted metal on my mom's ps1 back in 1996 or so is one of my first memories as a kid of playing my first video game ever and the series has stuck with me since. I'm really hoping for a good time and I'm taking your opinion into account that it's actually watchable and enjoyable. A serious and dark horror movie straight out of a mix of Twisted Metal 2 and Black would be amazing.

I enjoyed the show as well, much more than I expected but I will say I think I know why this show performed better than expected. The TM universe doesn’t exactly have an established story. Every game is different, the only recurring thing is Calypso and the TM tournament so I feel like the show runners had a lot of free space to work with as opposed to the Halo show where we know everything there is to know about the Covenant and the flood,ODST,etc. So I feel like the TM fans could forgive a lot of what they do with the characters because again, the TM universe changes everytime and there is very very loose continuity. I am a HUGE TM fan and I give the show a solid 7/10. It could have been a lot better and I wish there was more car combat

I'm hopeful they actually follow up with another season after the way that ended. My wife had no previous exposure to Twisted Metal, and hates clowns, and even still she is now a Sweet Tooth fan.

No one is commenting about the soundtrack. All the songs hit home for that 99'-03 time period. I loved rediscovering the classics I've not listened to in 20 years.
I think Sweet Tooth's background got darker with each iteration of the game and the show is an intro to the first game essentially. So he's going to be pretty out going rather than pure psychopath. Especially with them showing us that he still has Harold (paper bag).
Sort of, Head On kind of tones it down a bit, though not because Sweet Tooth is any less grim, there's just way less scenes of other characters interacting with and having history with him. Black was also special because it's supposed to be the world as Sweet Tooth views and interprets it, which is why it's so comically evil and hopeless. Everyone is either a horrible person or a victim, and people who try to do the right things get cruelly shit on by life, or are secretly selfish and evil themselves, therefore being cruel and evil is the only viable path, and might makes right. It's an interesting concept, writing a world where reality is based on how a hateful and cruel psychopath experiences it.

What I liked about Quiet was, despite being a completely new character, she kinda felt like she was already part of the Twisted Metal universe

To be honest, the bad cgi worked for me because the mental images I have of these games are from the PS 1 games. It somehow felt just right. Not to say a better cgi will be a bad choice though.
There's a weird section of comedies that nobody talks about: The ones where the jokes don't make you LAUGH, but the overall vibe is still really enjoyable. There's a couple movies for me that are like that: Comedies that I didn't really laugh at but I enjoyed because I liked the characters and atmosphere despite that. Twisted Metal is right on that line, and occasionally twists into it. Will Arnett as Sweet Tooth was surprisingly enjoyable.

I thought John and Quiet's relationship was written quite well. Fantastic acting on both their parts. In fact, the overall character arcs in the show were strongly written (John's decision at the end). I wouldn't even call it a b-show. There's some genuinely touching, thoughtful moments throughout the show.

The Twisted Metal show is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it's funny, the characters are likable, and it's not slow. Solid 6.5/10. EDIT: The show exceeded my expectations but has plenty of room for improvement.

The last time the internet changed their mind about a live action video game adaptation this quickly was the first Sonic movie. My personal little conspiracy theory is this: Both the Sonic movie and Twisted Metal intentionally put out bad marketing to stir up attention through outrage because with game adaptations, more people will show up to see how bad it is than they would to see how good. That way the positive response would be obviously confused, but far more genuine, so they'll know whether they should make a season 2 or not.

I binged watched this entire season 1 just today. I have no real knowledge of the video game itself, but I loved the show and I really hope it gets a season 2 because wow, what a cliffhanger.
Well just to let you know, season 1 doesn't follow the games story at all but season 2 looks like it'd be more like the game with the tournament taking place
I recommend watching the intro videos and character endings for Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted Metal Black (my two favorite entries). That'll give you a feel for what the franchise actually is
@@conchamberlain4282 Twisted Metal Black is kind of a departure in tone for the entire series (being pretty much the polar opposite to Small Brawl), it goes into way darker and edgier territory than the series ever actually did before, every turn is incredibly bleak and gritty, often to contrived and hilarious points (yet remaining disturbing and sad), and the previous entries were never anywhere near as fucked up, the tone was a lot less serious.
That grim tone colored the future entries, but no other game in the series is nearly as fucked up or hopeless, and there's a good reason for that, but I feel they could have explored it more, which they almost did but eventually decided not to. I think you could make a pretty cool 'anthology' show out of something like that, where each episode is about a given character, or possible a character would get two or three episodes.
I just finished this first season and instantly thought charlie NEEDS to review this and spread the word. Its so fuckin good 8/10
This show was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it for what it was. They paid a lot of respect to the franchise, and it had an actual story/lived in world.

True he's awesome, I actually have a soft spot for the OG Mr Grimm the one where he's the current host of the Grim Reaper, the others go for a more grounded take where it's a man dressed up as a Skeleton guy, a bit less imaginative if you ask me for those versions of the character.
as a 90s kid i loved this show. i was very dissapointed with a lot of my childhood memories being pissed on by the modern standarts of media, but this show got me to my soft spot. not a masterpiece but watching it with friends made me feel like a kid again. i also almost cried at that one moment, you know which one ;)
if this show really does well, they MIGHT give us a new game, and I hope they do, because I loved the old Twisted Metal games. I played pretty much all of them except for Head On and 2012.

It's kinda like a prequel to the games, like all the tournament participants knew each other before the first tournament happened. Whereas in just the games only a handful of the characters had some sort of a connection before the tournament.

As someone who has played twisted metal 1, 2, and twisted metal Black, this show did an amazing job implicating the characters, and fleshing out their back story (despite it being slightly innacurate for a couple of characters). I really enjoyed watching it.

The first season is REALLY good. I really hope they make a season 2.
Only had a couple issues. Sweet Tooth was the only one to use a "Special" weapon. Even had the laughs that go along with the attack. Was for sure expecting Agent Stone to have the Tesla Coil attack in some way. Also being shown all the drivers that they did. Without showing their mode of transportation. This season at the end came across as a set up season. If the second season has more car combat. Then it will make up for any short comings from the first season.
I really hope that the Twisted Metal show does well, if for the sole reason that it means we get a brand new TM game, I would genuinely love that.

This was quite the surprising show, met up with a couple of friends yesterday and one mentioned he started watching this show so with a lack of ever knowing about the original games we decided to give it a shot cause what the hell. ended up blasting through the whole season in one night cause we had a lot of fun with it. solid 7/10

Haven't watched it yet but twisted metal on my mom's ps1 back in 1996 or so is one of my first memories as a kid of playing my first video game ever and the series has stuck with me since. I'm really hoping for a good time and I'm taking your opinion into account that it's actually watchable and enjoyable. A serious and dark horror movie straight out of a mix of Twisted Metal 2 and Black would be amazing.

I think people also have to remember that in one twisted metal game sweet tooth's wish was to become an insect and that's it. These games and characters were never that dark or crazy until twisted metal black

I enjoyed the show as well, much more than I expected but I will say I think I know why this show performed better than expected.
The TM universe doesn’t exactly have an established story. Every game is different, the only recurring thing is Calypso and the TM tournament so I feel like the show runners had a lot of free space to work with as opposed to the Halo show where we know everything there is to know about the Covenant and the flood,ODST,etc.
So I feel like the TM fans could forgive a lot of what they do with the characters because again, the TM universe changes everytime and there is very very loose continuity.
I am a HUGE TM fan and I give the show a solid 7/10. It could have been a lot better and I wish there was more car combat
watched it all in one day. had so much fun with this series. hoping for season 2.
Sweet Tooth needs his own show, I really enjoyed his character.
i actually really enjoyed the show. Never really played the games much but I remember hearing about them a lot I found the jokes Landing more often than not. The show is worth it for Sweet Tooth alone

I'm hopeful they actually follow up with another season after the way that ended. My wife had no previous exposure to Twisted Metal, and hates clowns, and even still she is now a Sweet Tooth fan.
Im only 5 episodes in and I love it, definitely cringy at times but it's pretty great I had low expectations but im glad they didn't massacre my childhood charecters

Here’s a big conspiracy I have. I believe that after seeing how Halo TV show team said that they never played the games, every team behind a video game adaptation started to act like they didn’t understand game franchises so that their shows can succeed more. I don’t know how that logically makes sense, but we’ve seen with both Last of Us and now Twisted Metal that this has happened.

No one is commenting about the soundtrack. All the songs hit home for that 99'-03 time period. I loved rediscovering the classics I've not listened to in 20 years.

The fact that charlie is talking about how bad the clips are is just so relateable.
I think Sweet Tooth's background got darker with each iteration of the game and the show is an intro to the first game essentially. So he's going to be pretty out going rather than pure psychopath. Especially with them showing us that he still has Harold (paper bag).
Sort of, Head On kind of tones it down a bit, though not because Sweet Tooth is any less grim, there's just way less scenes of other characters interacting with and having history with him.
Black was also special because it's supposed to be the world as Sweet Tooth views and interprets it, which is why it's so comically evil and hopeless. Everyone is either a horrible person or a victim, and people who try to do the right things get cruelly shit on by life, or are secretly selfish and evil themselves, therefore being cruel and evil is the only viable path, and might makes right.
It's an interesting concept, writing a world where reality is based on how a hateful and cruel psychopath experiences it.
