Wow! This was very clear to understand! Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know! You’ve gotten my attention in a very short span of time! Nice!
When I want to clean out the pipes that are in the bog I do not use a hose as suggested in the video. Instead, I leave the pond pump running and remove one riser tube cap at a time. Everything that is built up in the pipe floods out. I then recap it and move on to the next riser tube. It is very easy and quick to do, and I would think it does a better job of cleaning out the pipes.
Nelson Water Gardens & Nursery I am having an impossible time finding exactly 3/8” pea gravel. Most suppliers here in Georgia have a range of sizes... any tips on how to find this size gravel? Or do I have to buy a ton of it and sort/measure it out stone by stone? Thanks in advance!!!
@@collinblake9957 It depends on how strong the flow is to the bog. If the riser has good pressure and a lot of muck comes out when you remove one of the caps then you are probably okay. If not, then you may want to add a valve to allow you to increase the flow by redirecting from the waterfall.
If I have a planter bog filter that is bottom fed, can I have that overflow (pour in from top) into another bog that will overflow into my pond? Can a bog fill from the top? Thanks
Same question I asked. I've seen several bog designs, as we are planning a bog filter for our 2,800 gal. pond. Ozponds has a video where there is a clean out tube, but he puts in a hose (pond vac) to suck the debris out instead of flushing the debris out.
Hello just watched your video on the bog filter.i have just made a bog filter for my pond which is 4500 litters and my bog filter is 450 litters.its been running now for about two weeks but i have not seen any difference in the quality of the water its still not very clear.i have an 800 litters per hour pump running. My question is how long does it take for the winter to clear?looking forward hearing from you thanks
I’m currently building a bog filter following these guidelines. I live in Michigan and was wondering if you had some insight on how to prepare the bog for winter?
Hi @sayerseely3195 ! I am starting to build a bog filter. How is your doing so far?? I am interested to know how is is going after 5 years of running in your pond. Thanks in advance for your reply! Regards from Argentina!
I am considering an active bog for my pond. It's about 4500 gallons. My question is this, its currently quite murky. Should i mechanically filter the pond before implementing the bog setup? I am concerned the bog wont be able to process the water in its current state.
I agree with you instructions and everybody that is known to be an expert on ponds will say the same thing no more than 12” deep just wondering why. Great content
because people use the wrong size gravel. the 12" depth, as suggested in this video, is probably for the 3/8" gravel and 1.5~" pipe diameter. i have seen videos where the bog filtration system used is over 4 feet deep and over 10x20 feet wide; they also use much bigge rocks towards the bottom and gradually decrease the size towards the surface and much bigger pipe diameter
Wouldn't you suck out the debris instead of running a hose down the pipe flushing the system? Where would that debris go if you flush it out? That's the only thing I don't get. Doesn't make sense, that debris has to go somewhere.
@@charlottejurek8867 i have put mine facing up and have a good angle down to a plastic drum where the crap ends up . the plastic drum is big enough so i can go in and empty it with a little bucket .
Slots facing down can cause the liner to weaken over time (we're talking many years) since the water is flowing strongly. There is no down-side to having them face up. If anything, the nutrients are more likely to get to shallower plant roots when facing up.
So can you show me the connection that will let the water back into the pond. I plan on using 1 or 2 tough totes 27 gals each . The depth of them is 20" so also need to know how I make up the extra 8" should I use grates or a combination of grates and filter material ?
Best video and information on bog filters anywhere that I have found, and I have been looking. Thank you very much!
Seriously underrated video. You made this so perfectly clear! Thank u!

If your pump was going to feed a waterfall too, should I put a shutoff valve to the waterfall and direct all the water to the bog blow out?

Collin Blake have you figure this out?

How do you clean this pipes in bog filter do you have a video thanks!

This is great...thanks for the information. How often do you clean the bog filter?
That’s what I’m wondering and how do you clean it??
hi im from indonesia im learning how to build a bog filter for my fish pond.. i have a question. why it has to be 12 inch? please explain.. thanks..
Thanks so much, I built a big bog filter following your instructions. Works great!
2 months in and my water is crystal clear despite getting all day direct sunlight in the desert. So happy with the bog filter, thank you!
6 months in and it’s going great, crystal clear water!
1 year + in and the water is crystal clear and the bog plants are enormous!
2 years in and I just cut down all the bog plants for the winter as they were too overgrown, the water is still crystal clear!
What size pump did you use?
Thank you so much!

How big of a bog area for a 8x12x3 koi pond?
Why do they fail if made more than 12 inches deep?
Probably due to lack of oxygen down below, creating an anaerobic zone. But some plants like common reed should at least partly prevent that.
But won’t anaerobic zone be good for nitrifying bacteria ? I thought you’d want to create that zone on the filter side ode the pond.

Also do you need a UV light with a bog?
yes you do
No, definitely not. The bog plants will remove the nutrients that normally feed the algae.

Have any viewers noticed that the uploader does not answer any questions?
IMHO slots should be facing down.
I was wondering about that. I seems like sediments would settle into the slots.

My connection is a waterfall. The bog is raised 3 feet above the pond surface level.
