  • I had serious issues on this famous road. Back of the Dragon First Ride! The Back of the Dragon is a 32-mile stretch of road in southwestern Virginia that twists and turns through the Appalachian Mountains, providing riders with breathtaking views and exhilarating curves. Riding the Back of the Dragon on a Honda Goldwing DCT can be challenging for some riders who are used to manual transmission bikes that require clutch control. The Honda Goldwing DCT has an automatic transmission system that uses a dual clutch to shift gears seamlessly. While this may seem like an advantage, riders who are not used to this type of transmission may find it challenging to control the bike in tight turns and steep inclines. Without clutch control, it can be difficult to manage the bike's speed and stability when navigating through the winding mountain roads of the Back of the Dragon. However, with practice and familiarity, riders can adapt to the Goldwing DCT's automatic transmission and master the art of riding this iconic route.

FYI ... The first biker lady stood only 4 ft. 11 determined to ride a two-wheeler. In 1937, it was illegal for women to ride motorcycles. But 27-year-old Sally Halterman, or Sally Robinson as referred to in the archives, used her voice to become the first woman in Washington D.C. to get her motorcycle license. Story has it she rode motorbiked since 1928, but almost a decade later decided she wanted a permit. A policeman (who wouldn’t ride in her sidecar), two exams, a road test, and a lawyer later, she earned her license. In fact, Sally is the only woman to be initiated into the D.C. Motorcycle Club. Yay, Sally!

Great video. Love my PC800. Did a road trip from Ga to the Canadian Rockies years back. Greatest roadtrip I've ever done. By myself and feeling free. Next to the Dragon is the Cherohala Skyway. The turns are not as tight, long and sweeping which gives a better chance to enjoy the view with plenty of pull-offs and much less traffic of the folks trying to challenge the Dragon.

Hey Jess, your missing out on a bunch of fun with your Wing by not using manual mode in more spirited riding environments. Don’t go into Sport mode right away, stay in Tour mode but you control the shifts not the bike. Remember the DCT will downshift if you allow it to even in Manual mode so don’t wait for that to happen. Downshift before the bike does in Manual mode and you will soon see the fun come back into your riding same as you would see in a conventional transmission equipped bike, but no clutch lever to worry about. If you want to spice things up more buy the optional foot shifter. That item is a gas to use and gives the shifting job to your foot just like the old days. Once you used to doing all this in Tour mode then dial up Sport mode as hang on.
    Rick H.

Absolutely great on the twisties! I put mine in ‘Sport’ mode and enjoy the twisties! The best thing about Sport Mode for me is that the engine braking and shifting is nearly exactly how I would shift. I can focus on the ride, not on what gear I need to be in, a definite DCT perk!

I had a ctx700 DCT, and then I've updated to the rebel 1100 DCT.
Living in Colorado, we have a lot of roads like this. it does take some getting used to, regardless of the clutch/lack thereof!
One year we hosted a Distinguished Gengtleman's ride that was a fairly easy ride through town to Red Rocks, which is gorgeous and not very fast. We were chided for it 'being too technical', even though we do it with a lot of 50cc scooters too.

I ride a 2022 DCT exactly like the one your riding and that bike can be serious hustled in tour and in sport mode. This was my first DCT bike but i took to it very easily. You just need to get used to it a bit more. Put it in sport mode and then use your shifters. You'll get more engine braking when its in sport mode but if you shift it too and get serious with it its unbelivably fast and nimble it really likes you to show it whos boss. I've contemplated selling mine as i just riding it through twistys too fast. I'm gonna lose my licence at this rate.

From our area, it was just about the same as riding around close to home. All manual tranneys. The solo rider on a twinkey stayed in 3rd gear most of the way. Sporty couple said they stayed mostly in 4th gear. Mine------well, I kinda wished I had an auto transmission. Did lots of shifting from 2nd-3rd -4th & back. Nice video you made. Thanks. I myself am just happy I rode that trail before it got popular.

I don't understand why you would need clutch control or friction zone going those speeds... you should only use the clutch to shift up and down... which you can still do on the DCT just fine... I don't know what mode you had that in, but you should be able to set it to have great engine braking and it takes twisties really good in manual mode with you shifting exactly like you'd do with a manual clutch. I haven't done roads like that on a Goldwing DCT, but a Rebel DCT, and maybe the size/weight makes a big difference, but at least on the Rebel, the DCT makes roads like that much easier if you use it right.

Coming out of Marion as you did, your best overlook is right near the beginning above Hungry Mother State Park. The others as you mentioned are on blind curves, until you get near the kudzu corner near the end where there are a couple. My first trip on it was wet, thankfully there was almost no traffic (I pulled into one of those blind curve overlooks, took a phot and then turned around and saw the truly iconic rock wall opposite, which makes a great photo backdrop, and if you place it right, you get two or three curves in the photo too). Somewhat less challenging a ride going south as you don't have the rock walls on the inside. Last trip I even rode it at dawn a couple times to fit in a lot of other riding too, great photot spot at Hungry Mother overlook with fog in the valleys (only saw one deer too).

Id say that Western NC, Eastern TN, West VA., and North West Georgia, is (to me) the most beautiful part of the country to experience on a bike. I live in the Rockies now, and it's majestic here as well, but different. What I miss is that dank musky air, and the different smells along the way. From kudzu in bloom, to honeysuckle, sweet betsy, magnolia, and so many more native species of aromatic plants, trees, vines, that are everywhere. Then there's the smell of burning tree stumps, lol...miss it all.

As for the handlebars, I use a RAM Mount on the left and right sides of the hand controls with a tubular bar between. Works great.

NC is a fantastic place to ride.
Near Denver on Hwy 150 go towards Mooresville, NC.
There you will find dozens of eating establishments to fill your appetite.
The place you are at is called Catawba after the Catawba Indians near the Catawba River.
I am an hour from that town.

Just for info, the self cancelling indicators are selectable in the vehicle settings menu on that Goldwing. I just add hand signals when there might be doubt about my intentions.

20:20 I have the same problem with the handle bars on my 2010 Goldwing….I put a Ram mount on each side of the bars, near the grips, works well for the phone, and a camera facing me.

That’s awesome. So glad you guys were down here. I’m only about 30 minutes from where you were.

If you come back to NC and want to do some mountain riding, I usually stay in Maggie Valley, NC. Not too far from 40, but also in the mountains, most riding is within an hour or so. If you want to explore more near the Back of the Dragon, I stay in or near Shady Valley, TN (home of the Snake, 489 turns in 12 miles). There is also a map that outlines all the great routes in the Appalachian Mountains. Highly recommend getting one.

A lot of people don’t like the DCT , mainly they do t know how to use it, you can ride as hard or casually as you like it will change gear better than you ever will or could when going down hill and are in drive just flick it down the gears with thumb paddle and make sure you have the throttle rolled off completely, I ride over the passes in New Zealand with very steep grades and the bike is rock solid. Most people who comment on DCT just aren’t riding it correctly, the computer is far superior to your changing and better for the motor.

Absolutely loved this video ! Thanks for sharing your rides. Glad you are getting to spend some time with Jordan and taking some rides together , the shots with the Beemer and the Goldwing together were great and kinda dramatized the differences between the two bikes . Back of the dragon was cool , glad you got to do that , I was wondering how that DCT was gonna do on a road like that . Does the Goldwing almost feel automotive to you ? My 2017 Goldwing does everything very well and it fits me , sometimes it feels automotive to me but its such a great bike . Thanks for what you do !

You’re not really far out talking about comparing it to the Scottish Highlands since the Appalachians and the Highlands are apart of the same ancient mountain range. As someone who lives in western Maryland in close proximity to the Appalachian range, I have to agree, they are absolutely stunning and they never get old. If you’re ever looking for something a bit different but also similar to the Blue Ridge Parkway, you should ride the BRP all the way north to where it ends at Afton Mountain in Virginia. From there, Skyline Drive starts and goes through the Shenandoah National Forest. I think it’s around 100 miles hopping from mountain to mountain along the ridges to Front Royal, Virginia. Tons of overlooks and pull offs!

I’ve ridden the “Back of the Dragon” (VA-16) four times, and love it! I prefer taking it north to south. Best rides were a few years ago before it became so popular and widely known! Gotta be careful as it’s easy to build up speed and suddenly find your self in a couple really tight turns! Great ride!

You can get a ram ball mount to use for a phone mount. I’ve done it and it will place your phone at the position you want. If you have the DCT the left side will be your phone side.

I've done that ride three times but all before the statue and food place. One year the road was in bad shape the other two the road was good but there was a flock of turkeys in the middle of one corner. Still nice though, I do like a technical ride.

I enjoyed this video , I always take the 77 on my way down to Florida and often wondered what staying in Virginia and seeing the sites would be like , I’m curious what meal did Jordan get , it looked good but I couldn’t quite guess what kind of meat was in his sandwich/taco
