Maa sha Allah! Alhamdu lillah for this series on Sufism. Hadeeth at 27:40 "A person can never become a true believer until they love for their brother what they love for themselves." is sometimes a paradox. To break the paradox one should go one stage further - "A person can never become a true believer until they love for their brother MORE THAN what they love for themselves."

Why do you have to call yourself Sufi just call yourself Muslim. If you focus more on Asceticism and can find authentic evidence for that practice in Quran + Sunnah then thats fine your still be Muslim practicing the Sunnah. Im not sure why you have to label yourself?
You will not see anyone refer to themselves as a Sufi in the old literature by Sufis like al-Qushayri and al-Ghazali who mention Sufism without calling themselves a Sufi.
Al-Tusi said "All of Sufism is to be found in the Qur'an and Sunnah..."

In my experience anyone who says they are a Sufi is not truly of the Ahl al-Haq
