Exploring Sufism is a series of classes on the definition, source and history of Sufism as a spiritual dimension of Islam. Examples of Sufi influence on Muslim art, music, science and culture with a look at the solutions Sufi teachings provide to current crises.
Host Kemal Korucu received a BS in Computer Science from GSU and started a software development company where he still serves as its President. He has served on the boards of several nonprofit organization including the Istanbul Center and The Atlantic Institute, where he currently serves as its Vice President. Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh I'm a revert to Islam and am slowly opening my eyes to the truth of Islam. My initial introduction into the teachings of Islam has been mainly Salafi. After much searching and making dua'a to Allah Subhannahu wa ta a'laa to guide me to the correct understanding of the deen, I now feel like my understanding is starting to become purified. The pleasure of Allah comes not in fearing him and living in terror if his punishment. The pleasure of Allah comes from being in awe of his majesty and his love. Muslims should allow themselves to understand that the love of Allah and of his creation should be prioritised over the fear of punishment. Fearing punishment for showing love to your fellow man, regardless of their religion or persuasion is not Islamic. Only Allah can judge.

An excellent introduction to the Sufi phenomenon. Over many decades (beginning from a very academic position) I have come to realise that the point raised in Sufism regarding different ways of viewing reality, dealt with eloquently here, is central. Quantum theory began with the problem that light is sometimes a wave and sometimes a particle. This is a problem for the intellectual mind. But thousands of years ago the Sufis understood that there is no single easy way of describing reality, and that you need to approach things from a lot of different angles and not decide that one angle is "the right one" and the others are "wrong." In science theories rise, as Newtonian physics did, but are eventually overturned by others, and this can go on forever. If that is so for what seems like a solid simple universe, how much more must it be true for such a mind boggling subject as the nature of God?
