      @lucasvancleef4319 I'm so much in agreement with you on this I feel like since Chimaira originally started/debuted as the most original/freshest heaviest and grooviest 7 string band back in the very late 90s and early 00's. And @Robarnold, Dimebag Darrell, both guitarist from Devildriver and Nick Hipa from As I Lay Dying was and still are my top 5 guitar and musical influences with the now added Jack Simmons and Dimitry Mamedov from Slaughter To Prevail. Those 2 paired remind me of a Modern Deathcore Rob Arnold and Matt Devries because of their grooves and dynamic team abilities on writing the best rythyms, chugs, and then layer the perfect lead/ Ambient guitar tracks and also layer in some of the most technically sound melodic solos that actually match the overall feel and sound of every song. 2 examples of what I'm talking about with my comparison of Chimaira and Slaughter To Prevail being metal musics past and present guitarist tag team champions. Look up these 4 songs, 2 from each band. Play the two labeled #1 and #2 and play them as a pair start with Eyes of a Criminal and then 1984 and repeat with the next 2 songs. Listen and pay attention to the riffs that have that irresistible head bobbing groove and emotional, and technical feeling of the guitar solos
      1. Chimaira- Eyes of a Criminal
      2. Chimaira- Lazarus
      1.Slaughter to Prevail- 1984
      2.Slaughter to Prevail- I Killed a man

    Super nice finish on the guitar.
    A .059 for a low G sounds insane. I think that guitar could use a .064 or something depending on scale

    • @miahthorpatrick1013
      @miahthorpatrick1013 Год назад

      I was thinking the same thing. I'd slap a .068 on that low G but I don't know enough about this sort of thing.

    • @AnonymousUser66649
      @AnonymousUser66649 Год назад +1

      Even on a 26,5" scale guitar a 68 is a tad flobby still. On 25,5" i'd even throw a 72 there. 64 is definitely on the loose side still and most likely the guitar is going to be hard to intonate. Stringjoy string tension calculator is great for finding the optimal string gauges for different tunings and scale lengths. Drop G on my Ibanez RGD with 26,5" scale, a 10-48 set and a 72 on low G would have the most balanced tension across. I personally still use 10-46 + a 68.

    I've only made it 3 minutes in and I had to pause to comment and say that I love these videos and Rob, you're awesome! The reason those strings are that high is because they are the NYXL 7 string set. All of the NYXL line of strings are more expensive. If it were the regular XL line, the 10-59 gauge set would run around $7-9 depending on the store. I work at a guitar shop and we carry D'Addario so I know lol. You can still get a quite a few brands of strings such as Ernie Ball and D'Addario for around $5-7 Rock on my Metal brother!!! Chimaira 2021 🤘

    Beautiful guitar Rob. The finish on the body is just so well made. Drop G man that is a low tuning. I like the float bridge. It sets the guitar off. Never played a 7 string before, How did you find it Rob ? I know that Dino (Fear factory) plays a 7 string. So the Trust rod helps to lower the string tension if I'm right. I always thought that it was meant to keep the neck of the guitar straight. Just to finish off I leave you message just before you shared this video Rob. Saying that my parcel is now in Copenhagen airport Denmark. So just maybe I'll get it within the next couple of days. Cheers and take of yourself.

      Cool Darren! Stoked for it to arrive! This guitar is owned by a buddy of mine. So it doesn't belong to me. You are correct that the truss rod keeps the neck straight. After a big tuning change, I like to examine it to see if any adjustments are needed. Sometimes they are sometimes not!

    I personally wouldnt recommend looking down the neck like that to check if its straight or not. If you are not very very experienced you are most likely not going to see that. I put a capo on the first fret and press down on the last fret. Then I press down in the middle between these points. If i notice that the string needs to be pressed down very very slightly to hit the fretboard in the middle then i am golden. By very very slightly I mean probably less than half a milimeter or so. If its more the neck needs to be straightened. If the string is already hitting the fretboard in the middle when you fret both ends of the fretboard the nech is too straight and its going to buzz. Its a feel thing. I just play to see if I still encounter any buzzing when I adjusted it. If thats the case I just give it a bit more relief.

    Hey Rob, loved the vid! I've got this 7 string I want to convert into this tuning (Drop G). That gauge you used seems like it would be too light for me. Currently my guitar has 9-52 on it and it sucks. It's in B standard. The low B just feels and sounds terrible. And trying to play 5th chords with it sucks. To give more details about the guitar, it's an Ibanez Universe with a Floyd Rose and the scale length from where the locking nut ends to the middle of the 12th fret is about 12.5 inches. The Floyd Rose is sinking into the body so definitely not enough tension there. Given what I've said, what string gauge do you recommend? Any information you can give would be helpful. I'll try to watch your other videos about this topic but this is the only one specifically about 7 strings and it has armed me with lots of useful information.

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  Год назад +1

      I use 11-60 on my 7 string guitars in drop A. I use my typical 11-52 pack, and then I throw on an additional .60 on the the 7th string. These are also the gauges I'd use if I dropped to drop G.
      So, I don't think I really answered your question there, but maybe what I've said could be useful?
      Personally I've also been wanting to try some lighter gauges on my top strings, but haven't done so yet. My high E, B, and G strings all feel too tight and uncomfortable to play, and recently someone suggested I try 10's or 9's on those strings. So I may do that. But I'll probably stick with the 60 as my thickest on the 7th string.

      That helps a lot actually as well as giving me some interesting tidbits about your thoughts. Thanks for responding! I may try what you said and string a light top and heavy bottom with a .060 or more on the 7th. I never considered how tight those upper strings would feel with a heavier set (13-74 is what I was looking at before). Been a fan since The Farm Club so I appreciate the info! Cheers, mate!!!! 🥂 🍻

    Dude, just wanted to get your take on the following aspect of tuning.
    Some say you have to tune sharp and then decrease to your desired tuning to obtain better tuning-stability.
    On the flipside: Some say, it doesn't matter if you go from flat up or from sharp down to get perfect stabilitiy.
    Now... What would Rob say?

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  3 года назад +1

      I like to tune UP to pitch. So if I'm tuning and I overshoot the desired pitch, I'll drop back down and then tune up to the note again. There's something about the tension in that method I like. Or maybe I'm just superstitious!

    • @RobArnoldWorld
      @RobArnoldWorld  3 года назад

      As I mentioned in the video, the best action is achieved by getting the strings as close to the fret board as possible, without having any buzz. A slight amount is acceptable to me, if it means getting the feel you're looking for with your action. But very slight. Action is mostly affected by bridge height, so you should start there when making adjustments. Keep an eye on the straightness of your neck too, as you may need to make minor adjustments to your truss rod. This will also have affects on fret buzz. And then finally, string gauge, and your tuning, are also factors when it comes to setting your action and avoiding fret buzz. 🎸

      Well dude, if you can chugga chugga, then that's all that really matters! I think though that learning to care for your guitars and enjoying the process, strengthens the bond between you and your instruments. Ever notice how some of the greats like EVH, almost seem like the guitar is a part of them, and they can effortlessly make the guitar sound and do whatever they want...
      And so early on, I took an interest in guitar maintenance, partly due to curiosity as well, and it's something I've stuck with and continue to enjoy. RUclips videos certainly help nowadays, but they didn't exist while I was coming up in the game!
