  • Do you suspect you may have a cracked cylinder head or bad head gasket? Are you losing coolant, blowing white smoke, and getting sludge on your oil fill cap? These are all signs that you may have a cracked cylinder head or bad head gasket. This video shows how to do the bottle test to determine if you have compression in the cooling system. Did this video help you save time or money? If so, consider sending support on Paypal, for the username AdeptApe@yahoo.com and thank you very much for watching.

    I'm working on my 1967 Camaro with a sbc 350..white smoke high pressure in the coolant ,and i installed a clear hose between the intake manifold and the waterpump and can clearly see air bubbles when i bring up rpms, I have no choice but to pull the heads and have them magnafluxed by a machine shop, thank you for you great video and explaining in detail..

    Thanks for the videos. I have found them very helpful and interesting.
    I have a 2005 Bounder with a 300HP C7. We tow a 2017 F-150 behind it. I replaced the radiator and charge air cooler 2 years ago, about 12k miles ago. Total miles is about 96k. Last year the fan hub bearings seized near Williams, AZ and I had it repaired in Bellemont. I also had them flush the heater lines and replace both thermostats. He gave me an extra gallon of coolant because he said it would need to be refiled if there was any air in the coolant system that hadn't worked out yet.
    Last week it almost overheated while driving to Pahrump, getting just up to the 3/4 line. The check engine like came on. When it dropped just below the 3/4 line the temp read 213° F. When I got to the RV park the coolant was low so I filled it up. Driving back to the Central Valley it started to heat up, but never got up to the 3/4 line, which is about 215° F. I can put my finger into the top tank when cool and it reaches coolant, so it is pretty full after driving the 300 miles home. I don't see any evidence of coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. I warmed it up on a short drive and tried the bubble test anyway and got no bubbles.
    I sure would like any suggestions about possible reasons for the heating up. It is usually on a grade, but some grades hardly affect the temperature at all.

      +Alex Alanis The C13 heads are really easy to crack, just get the engine over 230 and it's done usually. C15 heads are a little more robust, but don't get it too hot. Thanks for commenting.

    KW Uses air operated heater valves in some of there bunks that when the seals fail internally they introduce air under system pressure into the cooling system. When this happens it will produce bubbles in the bottle test, as well as air locking the thermostats. I hope this info helps somebody out there. Thanks AA for the great content in your videos.

      If your CAT in your KW overheats when you turn your ac on ,you may have this problem.Try turning off the manual heater valves to the sleeper heater located by the water pump on c15 and 3406 engines. If your over heating problem goes away you have a bad heater valve at the sleeper. I have encountered this problem on 2 different trucks. Change the valve .Problem solved!

    If you are not sure clean the surface, put kerosene or parafin( im not sure about the english name), the sort you use for a heater or lamp, on the surface and wipe it clean. Then use white chalk on the surface. If its cracket the parafin that stayed in the crack will discoulour the chalk. There is a kit called coulour check or dye check. Works rhe same way. Also to be used on welding checks.

    I have a kenworth T2000 2007 C15 475 hp twin turbo! About 4 months ago the temperature gauge went crazy over 250! And motor shut down i had to stop and go stop and go for 100 miles to get to the yard! The coolant is pushing back out of the reservoir! Now every time i start the engine within 10-15 min it over heats! There is no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant! The only place water is coming out of is the reservoir little hose on the side A LOT and engine over heats. Any idea what could it be? Some people are telling me cracked cylinder hear and head gasket or liners or piston sleeve!
    Would this be possible since there is no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant?
    I have changed the oil cooler and water pump at Caterpillar almost two years ago. Any help would be appreciated. 🙏🏼

    Great videos! Found them looking for help with my symptoms and ended up watching about 8 so far. I have a 2009 C15. Bottle test looks exactly like your video, but no white smoke, smooth, no sludge or moisture sign on dipstick or oil filler cap. No change with compressor pressure line unhooked. Was pushing out 1 gal of coolant per week. Suddenly changed to 1 gal per day for a week. Last day pushed a gallon per hour. Idle or loaded doesn't seem to make much difference. Any thoughts? Thanks and keep up the good work.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 лет назад

      +survivethewalkingdead That is a lot of coolant consumption. If it is pressurizing the coolant out that bad then you most likely have a blown head gasket or cracked head. Check that radiator cap too, but it should not be causing that much coolant to be lost.

    Learned a lot from your videos. My c15 ate a gallon of water in three weeks. I did the bottle test and it didn't bubble at first but then it started bubbling not as bad as your video but there is bubbles. Wonder if it could be radiator cap weak

      I started losing water 12 gallons in a month on my C13 Cat. I had a bad cap gasket so I replaced the cap. That caused the motor to burn so much water it blew white smoke and skipped badly. So I put the old cap back on and tied a gallon jug under the hood to catch the water out the over flow so I could haul until the garage was ready to take it.in. When my jug got full I dumped it back into the radiator.
      Its in the shop now in fact. Can't wait to see what they find. Hoping for a blown head gasket only but we'll see.
      He said there should not be be bubbles going on at all. Never ever! You could have a cracked head, blown head gasket, bad pre cooler, leaking air compressor or cracked liner. All the things he mentioned driver. Come on!

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 лет назад +2

      +vitaliy kostenko Cat recommends the counterbores be cut at 750,000 miles. If you've pulled the head twice already it would be a good idea, even though it's a pain to do. If your fire ring was damaged on the head gasket as well then the counter bores is even a better idea.

    Hi again adept ape my truck was finally diagnosed after the breakdown if you remember I had a broken valve spring but luckily the valve never fell into the cylinder the head was sent to the machine shop, but I dont get it the shop just called after a week saying that I have a cracked head and I never had any antifreeze or oil going low or mixing issues I have the serial number of my head written down I will make sure that they haven't mixed up my head with someone elses. But what do you think would a cracked head cause any other issues than oil and water like compression?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  7 лет назад +1

      +Aiyman Khan Not sure which engine you have, I'm going to guess a C15. It is possible you have a cracked head with no symptoms. The C15 would sometimes develop surface cracks on the head and if I remember right they are normally between the valves. If the crack doesn't extend into the valve seat area it is "okay" of course any crack is bad. Can they show you the crack and how bad it is?

      In the beginning of the crack it will not connect to the coolant area yet.

    For what its worth 9 out of 10 times there is a reason for the head gasket failure, on the cyl with the problem it is imperative that the liner be pulled and the counterbore examined with a trained eye. There is a very good chance there is a crack in the counterbore. The procedure for that is done with a counterbore cutter, cut out the crack and shim it back and set liner protrusion, check the rest, if you dont, be right back with the same problem. I dont see a video on cooling system maint ? Folks need schooled on AF and how it turns acidic. Nice job on the vids

    • @AdeptApe

I thought for sure I would see a bad spot at #3. Also liners look great.I will never do that again. I hadn't seen the bubble test trick yet and haven't been a diesel mechanic for years. • @johngoldsmith6629
      @johngoldsmith6629 4 года назад

      I assume your pushing coolant out of the overflow.
      The last thing I do is pull the cylinder head. I may get it hot and pull nozzles with rockers backed off and psi test each cylinder with a hose hooked to a bucket and see if shop air is leaking into that cylinder. Liner flanges could be cracked, crack around carbon area of liner. Seen air operated heater control valves. Bad radiator cap, (Needs 15-16 psi), back neck on radiator itself.
      Incorrect way of doing a bottle test.
      Correct way have radiator cap off, adapter on neck with a hose down to a five gallon bucket or so.
      Thermostat fully open, take a bottle (usually a pint bottle) and fill with water. Insert hose into bottle and invert bottle in bucket of water. Time how long it takes to push water out of bottle until bucket starts to bubble. Usually forty five seconds or less engine has to much gases leaking into
      cooling system. Some engines the time may vary.

So if the engine is set to 2500 RPM, but someone downshifts to a very low gear down a hill and revs it up to 3000 RPM that code will become active.

      I can't physically help you with it, but I can explain it. First thing is go watch my IVA and VVA video and it really explains the system better so you can know what you are looking at. You have a bunch of not responding codes so that indicates that electrically the system is working, but mechanically it is not. Since you have low pressure codes and not responding codes, you need to figure out the low pressure code first. Pull your valve cover and look for damage to the IVA housings, the oil bridges, and the valve cover base. You might have to start it with a rag over the purge port so you don't get sprayed and see if you have a big oil leak somewhere in the overhead or for some reason you are not getting oil pressure to the valve cover base.

    That’s one bottle test and the other is a kit u can buy at your local parts store.
    Head test kit.
    Looks like a glass dildo lol
    Or at least that’s what I call it cause when it’s getting used, someone is getting fugged lol
    Push said dildo into coolant over flow tank. Fill dildo with the liquid that came with it.
    Turn engine on and bump up idle.
    If it’s a diesel your testing and it has combustion in the coolant system , the liquid will change color to green....
    .....then your head gasket or head itself is bad or the sleeves fell and u have some sort of escape of combustion. Either way , it needs to be pulled apart and inspected.
    One trick I learned :
    This worked on a Detriot 14l 2007
    Failed dildo test.
    I was in Texas and didn’t trust local shops.
    I removed the over flow tank (aka surge tank) cap drilled a hole in it and that let the combustion escape and not build pressure in the coolant system.
    The oil and coolant were not cross contaminating.
    I drove it like that (empty) from Longview Texas to Portland Oregon.
    Second time it happened (70k miles after some bs shop installed new gasket ) , I was again in Texas with a load heading north.
    I did the same trick.
    Drilled hole in over flow cap.
    Let combustion escape.
    Drove it loaded to Seattle , unloaded and then to Portland.
    I did have to add about a half gallon of coolant each morning. But once it warmed up, it spit that much out.
    Low water buzzard did not turn on the whole way.
    I pulled over every 100 miles and inspected it.
    And no, I didn’t go over 55mph the whole way. I put flashers on and rolled out ! Turned them off at weight stations and made sure it wasn’t pissing out as I went by :)
    Had I of been stoped , it would of been out of service !
    I went to the dealer and had them do an inframe. After I got to posted and new head and new egr.
    Liner went down on a clyinder.
    Dealer said shop who did first head gasket should of seen that.
    And did a inframe then.

    What's the root cause of a cracked cylinder head?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 лет назад

      Basically the metal in the head gets overheated and expands to the point that the tension in the metal has to be released somewhere, typically it's a crack along a weak point.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 лет назад +1

      +Diego Gonzalez okay, well disconnect the air compressor hot hose to make sure that isn't the cause, then it's pretty much certain you have a bad head gasket or head. Now newer trucks with EGR coolers can also cause cooling system problems, but on an older truck it sounds like you need to pull the head. The high blowby might be unrelated to the cooling system problem, if you have the head off you'll have a good view of the liners though.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 лет назад

      +Greg Eckhardt Thank you got the kind words. The Hot Hose line is usually steel braided and it's the hose that goes from the air compressor to the air dryer. All the other hoses on the compressor go back to the engine except the small governor line, but the hot hose is usually large like a 3/4" line or 1/2" line. Is your engine eating coolant or pushing it out of the overflow reservoir?

    • @gregeckhardt5338
      @gregeckhardt5338 8 лет назад

      +Adept Ape it is blowing it out the cap when the level is too high,but it has a steady drip out of the overflow hose all the time and bubbles almost as much as the one in the video. I put a new 10lb cap on already as is standard for my 95 w900l.
