This is actually another song based on german literature: It describes a scene from the realist novel "Effi Briest" by Theodor Fontane.
Effi is a young woman (or rather still a girl) who is married off to an older baron. She is very unhappy with her marriage because her husband does not have time for her and starts an affair with Major Crampas. The baron later finds out and challenges Crampas to a duel at the beach (thats where the sand is from). Her lover is shot and killed by her husband and Till describes his last moments. Effi is then divorced, disowned, dispelled by her husband and family and eventually dies.

thanks, I couldn't for the life of me think what it was based on, only remembered that it was based upon something! I was just going to head off to try and look it up and you saved me the effort with your helpful comment, thank you

Wow, Thanks for explaining, never read Effi Briest, didn't know the story, and therefore couldn't know it was the base for the song. Always thought it was just an original story by Till turned into a great piece of music.

    „Liese“ is a good one as well…

Totally agreed, the dark version of this song ;)

I don't know if this is intentional on Till's part, but to me the song is funny in a way.
The line " The bullet dies in the powder kiss" describes how the bullet remains in the barrel while only smoke comes out of the muzzle. This often happened with muzzleloading pistols (dueling pistols) if the gun was not loaded carefully.
The song "Roter Sand" has a twin. Check out the song "Liese". The melody is similar, but the lyrics are much more sinister.

Yeah, it's a western movie scenario. I like how theatrical and visual they are, even without visuals, just through lyrics. It's like Till always writes lyrics, with his own little movie in mind. It's always a story.

The Song is inspired by Effi Briest a realist novel by Theodor Fontane. Published in book form in 1895

The whistling in the song is provided by Jenny Rosemeyer who Flake married. Wish I could whistle like that.

Though not my favorite I really like this song. It doesn't sound anything like their other calmer songs -and in some way I think that it's the power of the song.
At this moment I'm just rocking with Richard and Till singing in "Emigrate - Always on my mind". The song have been covered so many times but imo this is so good if you know the love drama between these two men and a woman and the end of the music video can almost make a grown man cry. :)

Always on my mind and lets go make me envision Till and Richard holding hands while they record the songs, and that brings me joy 😅

I love this song. That tune, the whistling, it always lodges in my brain for days. It is so poetic and melodic and different to mostly everything else from Rammstein - on initially hearing it anyway, but then the more you know it and about it the more it fits. Till sounds beautiful singing this too

This is really good but the orchestral version is even better. Lifts the song more. Makes it more bigger and epic

Also, thanks for reacting to this song I actually clicked because it was first time I saw anyone react to Roter Sand! It is definitely one of the most underrated of Rammstein's work which seems unfair to me, because I think it is beautiful. But I guess when the majority of their music is just so damn good, there's always going to be something that gets missed I suppose.

All your Reacts are very very good. In german schools they also have a discussion about the lyrik from Till. Ich komme auch aus Deutschland und finde es toll, dass Du so viele Lieder von Ramstein in Deinem Chanel hast.
    You are great

welp that song isn't really that old. its from 2009 and it even has a sistersong (same melody different lyrics) called: liese. both songs aren't all that good :) but for each their own.

It is such a shame they have the whistling in this song as I love the song but I absolutely cannot stand listening to people whistling, anyone, anywhere, ever!! LOL
They are forgiven as they are such awesome artists.
