I agree. The worst ones are the people who just grab titles but dont say anything about the film. It just comes across as a douchebag thing to do...take a bunch of free stuff without putting any work in.
Yeah weird....I don't know him. Nice bloke but some of his choices are a bit "awwwwesome, dood!" I like it just to be film people, have to say., talking about Kurosawa and Renoir. Where else can we go to be a snob? Anyway. How come a musician gets to help himself?? And who's next? Shaun Ryder?
@@roy020895 I got into the Oh Sees in between my first watch of Breaking Bad and my second watch with my family, and realizing their song played in a scene I've loved for years was wild
I've been the biggest Oh Sees fan since Orc. Late to the party but they are the real-deal rock band. Rock is not dead, Jon Dwyer and company are keeping it alive.
Uncle Anaesthesia Dwyer should not be associated with the whole cheesy Greta van fleet ROCK ISNT DEAD BRO cliche. I think his creativity goes way past anything that’s just “rock”.
John gives some of the best interviews i've ever seen. The dude has a million stories and all of them are so interesting as well as his insight into just everything. A fucking legend love this guy
Love Repo man! If you haven’t s een John Dwyer perform live with his band you are missing out. He is so original and has been cranking out music for awhile now. He’s amazing!
Oh, I see. Repo man, Harry Dean, amphetamines. I have been digging watching old Harry Dean flicks. Carol Reed, True Stories etc. all great picks. Pleasantly surprised to see John Dwyer here and hear how his musical tastes have evolved. A+
A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.” Repo Man is soooo good.
I agree with him about Manchurian Candidate. It has always been a favorite of mine and recently bought the Criterion version. It ALWAYS pisses me off when people have such a hatred or aversion to B&W films. They are the very foundation of film. It is harder to film in B&W.
What the... this the greatest thing! And what a coincidence too! I recently ordered Grave Blockers by Oh Sees on vinyl the same week I cancelled my criterion subscription! Talk about crossing paths. PS i cancelled cuz school not cuz its a bad service
Oh my God, I can't believe you got John Dwyer, he's incredibly interesting and did not have an easy life growing up but came out of it as one of the best people ever
@@henrypeterdean I just know he was surrounded by a lot of crime and such. He had a very loving mom and stepdad but Providence can be a rough place. Tons of drugs, robberies, and various other crimes
I'd pick Dawn of the dead, killer klowns from outer space, fast times at ridge mind High, pulp fiction, Goodfellas, full metal jacket , platoon, Scarface
I had no idea he was like this, but I am ABSOLUTELY not surprised. Also, for anyone who's mentioned him scoring a film; he's either *done it* already, definitely *PLANS* to do it someday, or the right people in the film "industry" will see this, one of his music videos or just hear his music in general, and then ask *HIM* to score their film. If fucking Trent Reznor is doing it, I need not finish that sentence.
I can't watch Night of the living dead, BUT... everyone should watch "The Uninvited" with Ray Miland. Its Black and White, English countryside, ghosts portrayed with special effects, music; "Stella by Starlight" (which is the name of my Husky) the ingenue is played by Gail Russell, in her first film, she would go on to drink herself to death in real life. Did you know that Ray Miland, was in real life, one of the Queens Guards, in Buckingham Palace?
Ugh I want to be a produced/pro screenwriter so badly and I am in love with John Dwyer and hearing him say he forces his girlfriends to watch movies is like….. titillating….. I would never need to be less forced to do anything. Coercion is unnecessary and I want it so badly lol.
One of the best closet visits to date. Picks a movie, gives an insightful monologue for each. Well done.
I agree. The worst ones are the people who just grab titles but dont say anything about the film. It just comes across as a douchebag thing to do...take a bunch of free stuff without putting any work in.
Well John Dwyer makes music that I praise and love like he does his films he loves so there’s a passion in there somewhere
this is the absolute last person I expected to be on here but I'm all for it
Yessssss
Yeah, pretty much. I didn’t even hesitate to click!
Oh, I see...
Epstein tops that list for me
Yeah weird....I don't know him. Nice bloke but some of his choices are a bit "awwwwesome, dood!"

Love how he does a Batman voice to imitate his girlfriend at 1:43.
I was looking for this comment lmao
He should score a film.
Raymond Luxury Yacht no doubt
He did breaking bad lol atleast one scene
He technically scored one of Breaking Bad's best scenes.
@@roy020895 I got into the Oh Sees in between my first watch of Breaking Bad and my second watch with my family, and realizing their song played in a scene I've loved for years was wild
Imagine if he was able to rescore a scanner darkly

Same, dude. Orc hit me hard. Next thing I know I'm in a mosh pit as Dywer tells me to dig in and The Dream starts blasting. Glad I found this guy.
@@MasterRocking Sounds familiar..! Best live band out there.
Absolutely
🤘🏼

hey look it's the lead singer from Thee Oh Sees and OhSees and Osees and OCS
And he leads another band called orange county sound, must be a busy guy.
Also leads orinoka crash suite
😋
Damaged Bug , Coachwhips? Oh yeah damn not same band ;)
Don't forget Bent Arcana!
Wanker
He looks like this damaged bug guy
This is the greatest crossover ever
John gives some of the best interviews i've ever seen. The dude has a million stories and all of them are so interesting as well as his insight into just everything. A fucking legend love this guy
yeah seriously every interview I've seen with him is gold and same with all the little segments of him just talking in Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion
Wow, John Dwyer is one of my favorite musicians, been a massive fan of Thee Oh Sees for a very long time and I'm so psyched to have run across this
not enough people talk about true stories it's such a fun movie im glad he picked that
Wild wild life
People like Us!
masterpiece... Byrne drinks from both Lynch and Demme to build a supreme view on Americana....
True Stories - it's cool, comes in a multi-purpose container, a box.
One of my favourite musicians talking about one of my favourite art forms? Yes please, more of this please
Such a delight to see him on!
Repo Man is a criminally underrated movie. So cool to see John Dwyer pick that up!
not underrated but still a classic
Repo Man Is Always Intense
It’s jay bauman’s favorite film
@Drog .NDTrax nobody said it was obscure
@@JR-tc9xm You're thinking about a plate of shrimp; then out of nowhere, someone says shrimp, plate, or plate of shrimp, out of the blue.
i honestly have no idea who this is but i respect his passion for film and apparently he makes some pretty sweet tunes so ima go check him out :)
Strongest chin in the game!
Or the guy from the Dandy Warhols
fastest click of all time
A suprise to be sure, but a welcome one

First heard him with his band pink and brown. Somewhat hard to appreciate, noise rock ilcan be challenging.
Y’all are on the right track.
I wonder if JPD has seen The Lighthouse?
Without knowing who he is, I immediately knew he would pick up Repo Man just by seeing his picture in the thumbnail. Great film btw.
So glad you had John on here! He has fantastic taste and perspective!
JPD in the Criterion Closet is kinda unexpected

Big big fan and I did not expect him to show up at all. Thank you Criterion!

Repo Man is soooo good.
okay, now i have a craving to rewatch this asap
I had a girlfriend who used to do that monologue all the time. Should’ve married her.
“You do a lot of acid in the hippie days?”
damn, if osees start incorporating talking heads grooves we're in for a treat.
John Dwyer choosing criterion titles? I clicked that mouse so hard my table broke.
Lol same
Not possible bro
I have no idea who this guy is but his taste is impeccable.
The Osees dude
You need to know
I agree with him about Manchurian Candidate. It has always been a favorite of mine and recently bought the Criterion version. It ALWAYS pisses me off when people have such a hatred or aversion to B&W films. They are the very foundation of film. It is harder to film in B&W.
I'm so glad they picked him. I knew Repo Man was going to get picked before I started watching. Lol
I love his enthusiasm. You can feel his love of cinema.
Why does no one mention the chilling performance of Angela Lansbury in the Manchurian Candidate? She is the reason I bought the movie.
Tom Savini was actually in Vietnam as a photographer during the filming of NOTLD, that’s why Romero asked him to direct the 90 remake.
John mentioning about Eno says a lot about him, straight up
I love when they actually talk about the films they pick or just see in the closet.
This made my day! Huge fan of Oh Sees (or Osees now I guess?) and I had no idea John was so into films!
I’m with him on all his picks.
I don't know why but before clicking on the video I knew that he was going to choose Repo Man
Naked Lunch may be the most underrated Cronenberg film. It's fantastic bonkers cinema.
Alright Criterion i'm not fooling around anymore you better give me the Paul Thomas Anderson's closet picks or there WILL be blood YA HEAR ME!
And a release of There Will Be Blood... Phantom Thread too.
"This movie is upsettingly good"
ONE DAY there will be shows again! You better not miss this goofball shred --- seen em 3 times still ready for more
Wish Sion Sono or Takashi Miike could visit the closet one day!
and i thought that this week could not get any weirder. so awesome to see john dwyer doing a criterion closet pick. thanks! (no more excuses amoeba)
great avatar
Man I just discovered these guys last year after Face Stabber came out and this is such a cool surprise! Oh Sees are so awesome
I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about movies, but I never heard of Odd Man Out. Can't wait to check it out.
Honestly surprised and happy this happened
This is the perfect crossover of my interests, get more cool musicians in the criterion closet!
Best damn car on the lot
One of my favorite video from all over the internet
the more closet picks i watch the more jealous i become and now i’m determined to get on closet picks
Wow! Did not expect to see John Dwyer on here.
I've never heard of this dude, but fuck me, he is one cool cat, great taste and insight, bring him back for a part 2
One of my musical heroes geeking off over movies, just doesn't get much better
It’s fun to hear his take on black and white films after watching the music video for Red Study. Great dude
Not sure what JD has to do with Criterion but just like many others here, I approve and am not complaining at all.
John knows his flix.... was there ever a doubt

Great collection John.
Repo Man in bushwhacked was a great time.
John Dwyer, aka Thee John Dwyer and Jondwyer
His voice suddenly got deeper
Its crazy the range he has
I thought there was something familiar about the face in the thumbnail. Crazy that it’s the frontman for Thee Oh Sees. Totally unexpected
Honestly surprised to see JPD here, but I love it
Crossovers I didn't know I needed
I respect that he's not greedy and taking something he already owns.

woo! worlds colliding. what a pleasure
Odd man out
Night of the living dead
Great choices well done 👍
To no surprise John Dwyer names Repo Man as one of his favorite movies lol, it's like that movie is made for him
Thee Oh Sees are super rad!

I'd pick Dawn of the dead, killer klowns from outer space, fast times at ridge mind High, pulp fiction, Goodfellas, full metal jacket , platoon, Scarface
john dwyer is john dwyer. best criterion's invitation ever. lml
Excellent choices, all

Odd Man Out is not The Third Man
ahahahah i noticed that too.
Yeah he literally says that
@@iSmidgeons says what? he confused the two movies. but you can see he notices that when he reads the back cover ahahaha
Yes. Repo Man is one of the best movies ever
ik he is not that much a movie buff, but i would love to see Charlie Kaufman in here.
I didn't expected dwyer and criterion in the same video
You guys should get Rick alverson on here!

I have 1/4 shelf of movies in my own private Criterion Closet.
