Do you realize that Mall for a shopping place originates in the Mall, the ceremonial road that leads to Buckingham Palace, that features in coronations etc. It was paved red (pink) to express it's importance about a hundred years ago. Strange to say it never had any shops beside it. The name is thought to derive from an ancient ball game played along here called Pell Mell. The lane became The Mall & has retained that name ever since. Originally it ran through the ancient royal park. These Royal parks were often used for recreation. Some were deer parks, where deer were held to hunt by the monarch etc . A special type of boundary ditch/fence surrounded them that deer could only cross one way , into the park. They could not jump out again as it was arranged to scare them. Such parks meant the king could have the deer within easy range for bow & arrow shot, so he didn't have to work hard to get his prey. Deer were a major part of noble diets, lesser folk were not permitted to eat venison (except with permission). Theses parks around London are the main reason that there remains so much green space within the capital today.
funny you should mention red tarmac rds cos sunderland in the north east had loads of red tarmac rds as well as the usual blk ones and ive always wondered why we had red tarmac rds
Was there a few weeks ago. Looked at some of the apartments for sale at the top of the power station. Studio's start from £1.2m!! 😧 I believe Sting (of The Police band) bought an apartment off plan for £8.2m. These same apartments are now double that!
Was on the album cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals. There was a very large pink pig between the two towers near the river. It broke free, caused chaos with Heathrow Airport as the flight path goes straight over the power station. It was bought down a few days later in Kent, southeast of London, after being shot.
Just googled it. The one bedroom apartments inside the power station are going for £800,000, the 2 bedrooms are just under £2 million and the 4 bedroom penthouses are £6 million. I think I’ll pass.
I'm glad they've done it and it's cool to see on a video but it's been many years since I've seen Battersea Power Station. The trouble is that I'm a country boy and I'd rather have my fingernails removed than go anywhere near London these days. It just looks like my worst nightmare but that's just me lol
It's sometimes known as the upside down table. Pink Floyd flew a giant inflable pig above the building and used the photo as their album cover "animals".
Back to the 'make do and mend' or really in this case, repurpose. I'm so glad they found new use for this iconic building. Glad you liked the baubles. I only recently found out that you don't call that type of tree decoration baubles in the US! I'd love to try the lift!
I read the other week that for a studio apartment you won’t see much change from £1million. Then property increase in size and price up to double figured millions. Before this area was industrial with small factories and was a complete dump. One other point is that the new U.S. Embassy is just along the road, the one Trump doesn’t like!!
My friend used to live on a lovely houseboat there with a lovely little house boat community which had been there decades. They were all moved on-- community destroyed. If you see the embankment from the other side of the river it is an absolute eyesore of awful modern architecture -- they have really fucked the place up
Pink Floyd used Battersea Power Station for the cover of their album Animals. I noticed at the glass view lift was rising a Pink Floyd track On The Run was playing which is from their Dark Side of the Moon album. I don't know if Walk with Me added that but it would be cool if that plays as the lift rises.
18:48 That music in the background is Brendan Kavanah playing boogie-woogie on the public piano, he's a RUclipsr pianist that goes around London playing his amazing tunes and usually ends up with a crowd around him. He often gets approached by fans from all over the world wanting a photo with him. His channel is worth checking out.
John, who like these people would not really be buying anything from this place, wonders if the cost of living crisis is why there were so few shoppers.
I'm not a fan tbh. I can remember it when it was a power station back in the day There were many options, but personally I think they went with the wrong one. It's just a bunch of posh shops that won't last. A loads of ghastly flats
Terrible building, when it was in use it was referred to by many as The Cathedral, when I saw it last the ground around it was covered in coal dust, and it was a funny place of choice as I suppose the sizes of the area for the Landing of the newly developed Hawker Harrier vertical take of Jet, they filmed it for tv news all you could see was a very high cloud of coal dust and very little of the plane.😂
I bet you do know Battersea Power Station - have a look at Pink Floyd's Animals album cover from 1977 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animals_(Pink_Floyd_album) I live near London, and went to see this a few times while it was being developed, and then just after it was opened. Not a fan of shopping, myself, but cool to see the architecture and old hardware still lying around. I didn't pay for the fancy lift (elevator) though.

Its a beautiful place
Good video 👍
Impressive what been done that powerstation
05:22 looks like something from Gotham City maybe? It was used in the 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight.
Mark part of the £9 billion was spent on building a 2 station branch line of the London underground.

I just can't stop imagining how much Fred Dinah would absolutely love this

Check out the album cover of Pink Floyds animals album and you will see Battersea power station
If you would like to see more of what people think of when we think of Battersea have a look at Battersea Dogs and cats home.

There are Hospitals all over the country screaming out for wards and equipment but London needs another shopping centre.
The cover of Pink Floyd's album Animals has a picture of Battersea power station with an inflatable pig flying above it .
I would love to go up to see the view but I don't do well with lifts .

Ya we just call them balls. Yes that lift looks nice
Except theyve gone too high-end. My son was thefre recently. They had mediocre over-priced food and it was all Rolex shops and other high-end stores

Nine billion pounds, Mark, NOT dollars! (BTW. my wife would have LOVED this!)
The actual cost was £9billon, not $9billion.
In USD it’s just over $13billion.
wow

The Mall leaading up to Buckingham Palace is pronounced Mal to rhyme with pal, not maul
Can anybody guess which part of the UK has the most money knocking around? !
John, who like these people would not really be buying anything from this place, wonders if the cost of living crisis is why there were so few shoppers.
If you can afford apartments around there you can afford to shop in there.

I'm surprised to see this. I thought it would have been a mosque by now.
No, London is becoming more gentrified not more muslim, pushing up prices for us locals
Shouid show a before and now Photo's
