I got it in a Golden container. At first I was like "meh" because I saw some reviews, but after playing a few games (ok, more then a few!) I changed my mind completely. YOu have so much utility at your disposal - great torps, great camo, hydro, smoke, planes... it more then compensates for mediocre guns. It's a really, really good ship.
The smoke, the torp arcs and the concealment alone are considerable strengths of this ship. The aircraft are just icing on the cake. I think these advantages compensate for the lack of one turret when compared to Ibuki.

I got this in the Christmas crate, funny first game ran to island,hit hydro, Dd in smoke other side, launch planes and torp kill him. I felt dirty after that and give my self a -1 lol!
To me the planes are good for supplementing your guns, get a fire they dcp then try for a flood, have no one to shoot then might as well fly the planes, or you get someone low but then they run behind an island for safety then send the planes to get that different angle.
I don't understand Wargaming's logic behind the torp angles for IJN tech tree heavy cruisers. Turret traverse is glacial, DPM is not great, torp reload is long. Why on top of that give them bad torp angles too? Chikuma seems interesting though, but I prolly won't get it😅

I never played hybrids before and I'm not sure when a good situation occurs for planes or just shot / do other things in the game. IMHO the planes are gimmick I can use once I'm out of other options, like, nothing is spotted, enemy kites to other map or I'm just very low on HP and so on. PS: nice you have the same thoughts as me XD (after watching the vid) IMHO I think the ship is nice if you only want to chill and don't want to play the game activly. :) Like most IJN CAs are played by the players. ^^ Good pinata.
You're playing it wrong dude. It's not a regular IJN cruiser. Torps have 15 km range or whatever, you can launch them in general direction of the enemy on reload and some will eventually hit. And they hit like a truck. Guns kinda suck, there's not a lot of them and the reload is slowish, so they're not worth using on reload like in most cruisers. The playstyle is some mix of IJN cruisers and IJN destroyers. Preferably, you stay in front of the enemy push so they sail into your torps, you generally DON'T shoot (or you'll explode), and you use torp planes on reload to supplement your damage and make enemies turn into your ship launched torps. Guns are worth using only to finish off low HP enemies, or when you're safe behind island or in smoke. Though you might want to save your smoke for quick getaways. Basically, you want to never get spotted
The tone doesn't have that good of Torpedo angles. I don't see how the tubes would be able to be angled like that. Over all the Tone is worse in every respect to the Chikuma when looking at the torps.
the containers are honestly a scam all i got was some awful tier 5 and 7s nobody even cared about existing and the t10 dutch steel ship with the better airstrike and 2 t9 dds that i will never use, spent over 250 on this crap

Lmao, originally there was a concealment difference, the Golden version had better concealment than the normal version, but that got changed.

The chikuma 2 gets the wibble wobble torpedoes which the forest sherman used in real life. Unfortunately the sherman in this game does not get them.
I thought it came out earlier this year and this is the first year it's in the Santa containers.

They are just a good way for spotting, follow up flooding, and nice extra dmg. They are more utility than damage.

You can try to Herd enemy BBs into your surface torps with your Planes. Or Spot DDs. Otherwise... Useless

It's the worse steel ship in the game. A lot of ppl set it to lowest tier . So don't get it 100%.
