    At 4’20, it may not be 100% dumb: in the French championship, you need to loose by 5 points or less to get a defensive bonus (instead of 7 points elsewhere). As SF was led by 18-12, the drop goal helped SF loose 18-15 and get the defensive bonus, not such a bad deal as they were playing away (in Toulouse). Obviously, the head coach would have preferred they tried to score a try + conversion to win the game...

    • @alexisplanche6949
      @alexisplanche6949 3 года назад +5

      The problem is that that match took place in 2011, and at that time, the losing bonus point was still at 7 points behind or less, the 5 points rule only arrived starting at the 2014-2015 season. That means that the Stade Français already had the losing bonus point when Contepomi attempted the drop goal, which was thus useless. When you add the fact that the SF was only 6 points behind, with the ball and only 10m away from the try line, they had a really good opportunity to win the match instead of acquiring a losing bonus point they already had.

      The ball was kicked to end the game but it didn't go far enough and a teammate picked it up and threw it out the back end. This actually gives back possession to the other team as a penalty. The player that tossed it should have touched it down to get a 22m drop out and then kick it out to touch.

      @@smokeupsomeGI am "blinded by bias"? That is particularly strong language to describe me from a short post, so here is a longer one. I support Wellington and the Hurricanes. If you think i didnt get annoyed by McCaw in a red jersey you are very wrong. BUT my point is after years of intense debate and scrutiny leading to refs keeping a close eye on him they still rarely pinged him(for a no.7). And of anybody in a rugby team its the open sides job to push the boundary and find the refs limit. If they are not doing this they are not doing their job as no.7 (no.6 in SAF?). I get the frustration, i do, remember the final in the fog Crusaders v Canes? How did that happen? Red and Black Magic? In rugby, generally, it is not illegal to frustrate the opposition.

      2. the ball is then thrown over the dead ball line. Throwing the ball out of play is a big nono.If you do it over the side line or put it out of play by throwing it out, penalty.

      You can always kick the ball off the pitch, if the last defender had done that after the missed penalty then the match would have ended and his team would have won the game. Because he deliberately passed the ball directly out of play he was penalised so play carried on. The (much easier) penalty was scored and his poor decision turned a certain victory into defeat.
