  • For this episode I do the impossible. Make a left handed turn while resurfacing the ice. Well I guess it is not impossible but defiantly not traditional. A few years back one day I was like…hey why not. I will give it a try and see what happens. If I am not mistaken there are machines out there with roller wheels on both sides the bumper for this very reason.
It is a different feeling turning the other way and not driving the blind side of the machine up the middle of the ice. As you turn up the middle the open side or left side of the machine is facing up the middle.
Although I was having fun at the beginning of the video I do not recommend this pattern unless you are an experience driver. Not so much the ice grooming part but the driving part. Making turns against the boards with no oh-shit wheel on the bumper to push you away if you missed time the turn is somewhat risky. The timing on the turns is critical. I don’t want to wake up one day driving an Olympia…but I guess I could never know better.
Remember…you didn’t learn this form me!!
Questions and comments are much appreciated.

I might have to try this at night. I have been on a zamboni 552 for 3 years. I must say that you are a very good driver. Straight lines outta the gate. Water control. Happy zaming

I was actually taught to make ice the left turn way at my first rink. When I got to the second one, on my first day the manager has me do a cut and when he saw me going left started losing his mind thinking I had no idea what I was doing. Always amusing to mess with people

I do left handed turns every once and awhile. Usually at the end of the night while I'm waiting for one of those rentals that make sure they stay in the dressing room for as long as they're allowed. I worked with a guy years ago that was able to run the boards on his blind side.

About 45 years ago i started messing with flood patterns then learned it was all just simple math and trust After 20 years of never doing the same pattern twice in a night I found a good pegger that would count out the lines while I counted out time and perfected a blind flood not counting 1st lap 10 years later I was asked to stop left turn blind box flag pumkin circle and so on style floods I was told it messes people up

We have 2 rinks. We use this pattern in one rink and righthand in the other. Depends where the gate is :)

Ive been doing this for years. For me its an easier cut than my right handed pattern I did for many years before switching. I only do one normal lap along the boards first and then up the middle.

Great stuff! The handling of the coriolis effect must be quite different when using this advanced pattern, am I right? It’s probably somewhat like driving on the southern hemisphere but mirrored?

I've done lefty floods just to f**K with coaches and patrons lmao!! ... I get bored circle jerkin to the right all the time ...once you've done 100 floods you can pretty much do it full throttle with eyes closed lol ... ok wait! I open my eyes! lmao ...nice to find a community of us Boni drivers 😜🤟👍

I guess once you've done the first along the boards there really isn't any big difference going right or left. I've been tempted but haven't yet ! I wonder if the snow goes in backward going left ?

If your ice has any types of waves in it doing left handed turns actually helps level it out and work it the other way instead of doing the usual right handed turns and pushing it farther down the ice every cut it will help a lot

    • @palco22
      @palco22 Год назад

@@ockeyboys4579 We have Mondays and Tuesdays, flood the ice then we work the ice after five and six days of people bashing the ice. After edger work and ice board maintenance we alternate with right hand laps, left hand laps and figure eights. ... and that doesn't include transformation for curling ice ! That's another horror story.

The only difference between left hand turns and right hand turns is your blind spot front right..... youre still lining up the machine with your marker on the front for your blind side. As long as you turn a safe distance from the boards youre fine. No big deal. Some people wouldnt even notice I'm sure, others will have to take time to think about something different is going on, and very few will freak out because they will notice it, maybe giggle a little

Also wanted to mention speed skaters want it done this way too as they go counter clockwise

@@PDLaronde thank you for the added information. Yea the title is click baity for a joke. Not a terribly hard pattern once one gets use to the turns.

Can’t watch this, I keep looking to. The left to make sure I’m lining up the centre line just right 😂
I like using this pattern to to a quick levelling cut during a normal ice clean time.
