I thought the closer for To Be Kind was one of the most earth-shattering sounds I had ever heard. Especially the last minute of the track with the screeching… whatever that sound was…
@qweas dzxvc I find that very hard to say. I would argue that Deathconsciousness would not have existed without unknown pleasures at all. they are so inextricably linked.
@qweas dzxvc ..Sorry, I can't agree. I agree this album is amazing, but I can't say it's Joy Division amazing. However, it's your opinion and this is mine. Respect for you getting your thoughts out!
It's one of the few songs I'm not fond of on DC. I'm in no way begrudging the many who do; it doesn't ring with me. For me that's either Hunter, or, The Big Gloom.
we wish we were deaaaaaaad .... DIN DUN .... DIN DUN .... BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Great to see Deathconsciousness getting some love. I think the last three tracks are arguably some of the greatest 20 minutes in modern music, from the anguished dance track Deep Deep to the distorted guitar vortex of I Don't Love to the final carthartic unwinding of the album Earthmover, that almost feels like a sonic representation of the end of the world. It'd be nice to see a video on the band Wire, especially their first 3 albums Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154.
I swear at the end of Earthmover, not only can I feel the end of the world but time passing by faster and faster until it becomes clear that it never mattered in the first place.
A crow looked at me is one of these boring albums that only rely on their sob story behind it just like Benji Carissa's Weird - Songs About Leaving is the only album I would consider as depressing as Deathconsciousness
I remember one day back in 2011 i was waiting for the bus to come home after workday, and all of a sudden there was a distorced kind of sunray coming right to me, to my eyes, due to some reflection or whatever, and in the same time it started the slow part of Earthmover in the version of Voids II (demo version). It was so emotional I almost cried in public. I was in complete awe. Dude I remember that very day as one of the best experiences I had in this fucking life.
Just in case it wasn’t clear, I think the band have acknowledged that, although the essay about Ationchus and his late medieval death cult carries a sense of academic gravitas and pretension, it is in fact a total fiction. GOAT-tier album!
This might sound odd, but HANL is genius in a similar way Queen is. Queen is amazing, but also ridiculous, but they do it so well and so unapologetically all-in, they not only get away with it, it becomes awesome. HANL is so depressing and dark and fully in the open. I mean the lyrics of 'I don't love' without hearing the song could be, with all respect, seen as an over the top poem in a teenage emo's diary. But then you hear the song, and you hear he means every single fucking word of it, it's honesty is gut wrenching. The song and the album in general is so genuine it drags you in, hitting you as a 10 ton truck filled with despair. Dan and Tim display an almost ultimate vulnerability that connects so strongly with people. You can see it with the live shows too, the fans are emotionally right there with the band. Anyway, I fucking love this record. I can't even remember how I found it, but it was in 2012 or 2011. It started with Hunter and completely fell in love with the album, def in my all time top 10 albums, maybe top 5 and yes, insanely underrated.
9/10 album, incredible stuff. The earthquake moment in Earthmover is just monumental, wholly brilliant stuff. And as good as this album is, it’s bested by Giles Corey, a true masterpiece.
Around the time i first heard this album i had several eating and self image issues, i remember going to a beach trip with my parents and the hotel was almost empty, so i would just hum A Quick One Before The Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut as i walked on the empty beach under the gray, cloudy sky. It was beautiful and i felt the confidence to actually go shirtless in front of the few people there, it was the key moment for me to start working on my problem.
The track that really moves me and that I find to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever is Hunter. The breakdown just makes me feel like I'm looking up from the bottom of the ocean but still I can breathe freely. It's helped me come to terms with death and gives me a feeling of wanting to live.
I discovered Have A Nice Life through a random Spotify discover weekly, had never heard of them before. Excellent band, and this is an excellent record, didn't even know you liked it Oliver!
Jesus freaking Christ!!! Where has this been ALL my life... Its like every music genre I've ever dug wrapped in one damned album. Just checked it out. Thank you! Any other bands like this you'd recommend???
I've personally been a fan of everything The Flenser puts out. If you want doom/gloom, check out Planning For Burial. Depressive self-depricating industrial, check out Street Sects. Beautifully crafted post rock, Midwife and Sprain have been on heavy rotation for me for most of the year.
Wasn't Antiochus a fictional character/myth created specifically for the record? I can't seem to find any info about him or the movement other than this album's booklet.
Thanks for making this. Deathconsciousness is propably my favourite album right now. I discovered it about a year ago when Bloodhail popped up in one of my Spotify Mixtapes. I was instantly hooked by that oppressing bassline, those reverberated far-away vocals and just the overall feel of the track. Listened to it like 20 times afterwards. However it took me a while to get into the album as a whole, it being so massive. But one day it just clicked and for a while I listened to it daily. Even now I listen to it at least once a week and I still love every single moment. And I also completely agree with you that Earthmover is one of the greatest album closers of all time. It just builds up to that final moment and then releases all it's energy with so much passion and fury. I really love this album. When Flenser did another repressing of it last year I preordered the fuck out of it.
I'm very happy that this album came into my life as I was still developing my own taste for music, sound, and art in general. It's got a very special, dark place in my heart. ALSO I SAW THEM LIVE BACK IN SEPTEMBER AND IT WAS SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!!
Had to come here today. I had tried to listen to this record a few times before and it never really clicked with me. Then you released this video and I decided to give it another shot and it blasted me away. Ever since, I listen to at least a few tracks everyday, and I find myself desperately looking for other bands that sound close to this record. Thanks, Oliver
I really love their next record, The Unnatural World. It doesn't have the same gravity as Deathconsciousness and is a much easier listen - still, they manage to summon all the gloom in the world at points, like in Burial Society or the end of Defenestration Song. Enjoyed the review, Oliver!
I love The Unnatural World! Deathconciousness is a fantastic album as well, but TUW is a hell of a lot more digestible, whereas the former can be a bit too emotionally heavy for me at times. Music Will Untune the Sky is one of my favourite tunes to zone out to when I'm walking about in nature.
Saving our lives again, thank you Oliver, never heard about this record before, I just finished listening to it and all I have to say is that it is outstanding, wow I never imagined that I could hear ambient, post rock, drone and shoegaze in one single record.
You should listen to Soundtracks for the Blind, by Swans. All those genres and more are on that record (although I'm not so sure about shoegazing), and Have A Nice Life were very much influenced by that album and band.
I remember stumbling upon this album and just absolutely blown away by each song on this album, it felt like I was somewhat connecting with the album, I had many variables in my life bringing me frustration and sadness, it helped me a bit actually. Really need to listen to this piece again
When I discovered this album I was suicidal myself and was having a hard time and after all that I avoided the album again cause I was worried it was going to bring up memories and feelings but now it makes me feel proud and even a little happy that I got through that so now its an album of triumph and acceptances for me
Excellent choice good sir! A favorite of mine that I believes deserves more discussion, excellent job translating the history/mythology into a concise narration as always.
Whoever loves this one, should definitely check out Dan's solo project, Giles Corey. The self titled record is probably even more depressing than Deathconsciousness.
One album that comes to mind that oozes an atmosphere that really can't be shrugged off. From the companion piece, to one's own fears and horrible anxieties of death, or more terrifyingly worrisome, the meaningless of life, this album demands your attention in a soul sucking way. At first I was put off by the repetitious drum pallet (until I understood all the instruments they had to work with), but it became a staple of their sound and just made too much sense to keep that section hollow, but in an effective manner. I drowned in this album many winters ago and while it might have dragged me further into depression, I must admit the thresher of sound and sadness behind this album gave me insight and direction, oddly. I cant sit through the whole thing much anymore, and have some favorites like I Don't Love, Holy Shit and the underrated Hunter, but I can firmly couch this album at the top of my favorites. Essential indeed. Edit: not enough arrowheads
Ghoulish hunter made me fall in love with the record. Before i had my horrible neighbours i used to listen to records like this and swans etc in bed when i tried to sleep. I was halfway between sleeping and being awake during Hunter, swallowed up by the atmosphere, and than that climax... This album is def top 10 for me, maybe top 5
Holy shit, just thought of revisiting Deathconsciousness (and Giles Corey - s/t, too) this morning, and here it is - Oli says it's essential, so I have no choice
Dude, what a coincidence! Literally the day I hear the first track to this playing in my friend’s car you put out this video. Now I have to check it out!
Thank you for this I'm actually a hip hop head whose expanded my pallette into the ambient atsmospheric realm and have recently been digging deep into analog. But most of all I just love melancholic emotional music. I've been getting back into making music and have been searching for samples that make a listener enter a trance and I was instantly hypnotized as soon as I put this record on. Plus the album art is perfect.
The only album I've listened to at least once a week without getting bored of. No clue why, there is just something about it. Second favorite Vinyl I won, first being Comus - First Utterance.
Tim Macuga was my friend's english teacher in high school and they ended up getting really close to him. Through this, they were able to convince Have A Nice Life to play a show at their house last year.
This has been far and ahead my favorite album since I first discovered it back in 2011. One thing though, I'm fairly sure the title of HFS40k is actually a reference to Warhammer 40k, a tabletop game which Dan's known to be a fan of.
Amazing breakdown. Got this on the remastered blue vinyl and as a first time listener it blew me away. The mixture of shoegaze with noise elements makes a crazy gloomy atmosphere. Great breakdown of all the tracks and what makes it so influential
i saw them play all 3 of their east coast shows last summer, each time as cathartic and completely exhausting as the last. my favorite album by my favorite band, i got a tattoo inspired by Hunter a few months ago lmao
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one to revisit this powerhouse of an album on a weekly basis. Would love to hear your thoughts on their other release, 'the unnatural world'. Fantastic review, Oliver.
Interesting to see you recommending this. I had this recommended to me a few months back, and have been meaning to get around to it. Seeing you give it your seal of approval certainly moves this up my “music to check out” list, especially given the description. Plus, my life is going through a very dark period, and this sounds like a good soundtrack to release some of the tension/trauma. Hopefully, this helps, bc I could use it. Thank you, Oliver!
Dear Oliver, I love your videos! On the subject of death awareness, I am curious if you read the Pulitzer price winner book The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker, and if no, I will highly recommend it to you.
All time favorite album. Have a nice life is the most listened band, But the exact thing that makes the band so great and unique, also makes them one of a kind to the point where i can't find anything similar (besides Dan's side projects and maybe a handful of bands with similar themes and sounds) Btw, it seems that some listeners don't try 'The unnatural world' for some reason. Listen to it. It maybe shorter, but with some fantastic tracks that feel like a continuation to Deathconciousness, but with enough difference to make them a new thing instead of a mimic. Anyway, Great video, Nice to see others enjoying the bands work as much as i do. Would be lovely if anyone reading this could recommend me something with the same..feeling
''Another Reason to Forget'' the 1997 live album by LOW was my introduction to the band. The masterful centerpiece - Do You Know How to Waltz? - absolutely scared me to bits. A mesmeric slow burning fugue that grows by winding tension louder and louder, tighter and tighter, into an attenuated car crash. Every time I listen to it the anticipation foreboding is palpable. The suitably airy and reverberant acoustics of the Church of Phillip St. Neri, Louisville, Kentucky lend an eerie and otherworldly quality to the performance of these early songs. Their 'liveness' adds a dimension missing from their definitive studio versions. A kind of perfection in their imperfection lifts these eight songs to their vivid best. Deathconsciousness is evocative of those feelings I have when I listen to Another Reason to Forget.
Great album that is rarely talked about on RUclips. Would love to see a video on the Giles Corey self titled album as that would make a great video for an in depth discussion and analysis.
I really like this record, although it's a challenging listen sometimes. Not for every day listening. Great video, though. you made me want to listen to it again. thanks.
Was just listening to Deathconsciousness when this came up in my notifications. I guess I'll listen to it again! If this isn't a sign to get the record then I don't know what is!
I stumbled upon this album back when it came out and I remember liking it quite a bit. However, it never stuck with me much. It's a bit too dark I think. But, except for Hunter, I really don't remember the album anymore. Basically have not listen to it since it came out.
My favorite experimental blackened doom-shoegaze-folk-industrial-ambient-drone-emo-post-rock album
That is actually an apt way of describing this record, I can’t think of a shorter descriptor for something this complex
Maybe Blackened Post-gaze?
@Jayceon Edison silence! bot

Quite arguably the all-time 3rd best of that genre.

Ralph Lindsen that ethereal climax is really great, def in my top 5 as well
Thanks for introducing to my now favourite album ever.
Just saw them live last night. Incredible show.
Holy shit, just thought of revisiting Deathconsciousness (and Giles Corey - s/t, too) this morning, and here it is - Oli says it's essential, so I have no choice
Was literally just thinking about this album. So happy you decided to make a video on it.
I've always viewed A Quick One... as a sort of post-punk rendition of Swans' Red Velvet Corridor
Yessss me too. Def that screwdriver guitar part in red velvet corridor. Idk what they use in a quick one.
I feel like one of the major themes of the album is empathy vs apathy
Deep (state) cuts. Keep asking questions
Our Founding Liars Nice melon meme reference bro
Hou Khohs Why are you trying to discredit truth
The meme OfL pioneered you mean.
based and redpilled
What lol
This has been far and ahead my favorite album since I first discovered it back in 2011. One thing though, I'm fairly sure the title of HFS40k is actually a reference to Warhammer 40k, a tabletop game which Dan's known to be a fan of.
"I want to feel, like I feel, when I'm asleep!"
I know, its Giles Corey, but I like that one from the duo.
Thank you so much for talking about this album. It’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard and it needs to get out there more
Amazing breakdown. Got this on the remastered blue vinyl and as a first time listener it blew me away. The mixture of shoegaze with noise elements makes a crazy gloomy atmosphere. Great breakdown of all the tracks and what makes it so influential
Absolutely brilliant review/introduction of one of my favorite albums. Perfect description of an indescribable album.
this album completely drags you into a dark abyss.
So gonna listen this, thanks for this awesome video, Oliver! Gonna check it out!
i saw them play all 3 of their east coast shows last summer, each time as cathartic and completely exhausting as the last.
my favorite album by my favorite band, i got a tattoo inspired by Hunter a few months ago lmao
My personal favourite album of all time
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one to revisit this powerhouse of an album on a weekly basis. Would love to hear your thoughts on their other release, 'the unnatural world'. Fantastic review, Oliver.
Great video Man and great album, it reminds me of the first Lurker of chalice record. Would love to see a video on that album one day
Man, i love your videos! And i'm glad you're gonna be talking about more 21st century albums
I want to personally thank you for covering this album I love it so god damn much I feel as though it's so god damn underrated
thank you very much for this review. it is my favorite album, and helped me during multiple deep depressive episodes.
This album is a masterpiece so dark and depressing yet so emotionally powerful
Great record hauntingly beautiful and Dan's a super nice guy as well.
Opinion on Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury (imo one the best metal records ever made)
The only record that tops it is Paracletus, fucking love Teethed, Glory and Injury
i wish i can listen to this album for the first time again
This channel is awesome.
I might give this album a listen just to feel what he's saying.
All time favorite album.
Have a nice life is the most listened band,
But the exact thing that makes the band so great and unique, also makes them one of a kind to the point where i can't find anything similar (besides Dan's side projects and maybe a handful of bands with similar themes and sounds)
Btw, it seems that some listeners don't try 'The unnatural world' for some reason. Listen to it. It maybe shorter, but with some fantastic tracks that feel like a continuation to Deathconciousness, but with enough difference to make them a new thing instead of a mimic.
Anyway,
Great video,
Nice to see others enjoying the bands work as much as i do.
Would be lovely if anyone reading this could recommend me something with the same..feeling
Vasari O mmmh, you should try to listen to "the angelic process" and "Planning for burial" (if you don't know them)
Kuma Skyümæ i am familiar with them. Any other suggestions?
You should check out Swans' Soundtracks for the Blind. I'm 100% sure that Have A Nice Life were very much influenced by that album and band.
Great album that is rarely talked about on RUclips. Would love to see a video on the Giles Corey self titled album as that would make a great video for an in depth discussion and analysis.
Was pleasantly surprised to see this! Loved this album too 😏
I’m not sure what your opinion is on the unnatural world, but I think a review on that would be awesome, love that album.
I really like this record, although it's a challenging listen sometimes. Not for every day listening. Great video, though. you made me want to listen to it again. thanks.
I love this album and most of Dan’s stuff
I really hope we get more releases from them soon
Was just listening to Deathconsciousness when this came up in my notifications. I guess I'll listen to it again! If this isn't a sign to get the record then I don't know what is!
haven't watched the video yet but this album is definitely my favourite album
excited to hear your thoughts on it!
5 albums to get you into GLOOMCORE
Replace Leaving for his latest album and 10/10
Geisterfaust Good album but no
Gloomseeker - s/t
Such a classic album.
I've only heard "The Unnatural World", their second album, and loved it. I'm going to listening to this one then :)
Just got this puppy on vinyl, best 30 bucks I've ever spent
One of my all time favorites.
I stumbled upon this album back when it came out and I remember liking it quite a bit. However, it never stuck with me much. It's a bit too dark I think. But, except for Hunter, I really don't remember the album anymore. Basically have not listen to it since it came out.
bloodhail has got to have the best bassline i've ever heard
One of the greatest albums ever made
New HANL record announced for this year!!! Hype! They’re yet to release music below an 8/10 imo
Great stuff - enjoyed watching!
Another beautifully depressed, punky album from this century: Women's Public Strain.
1. Bloodhail
2. Earthmover
3. Sea of worry
4. Defenestration
5. Holy fucking shit 40,000
6. I don't love
7. Sisyphus
8. There is no food
Best record of the 21st century
I've been waiting for you to mention /mu/ since I started watching your videos
Wait. I thought "deep cuts essentials" was just a clever way to refer to Albums to commit suicide to.
I mean, this one is perfect
