- We visit the newly opened H.C. Andersens House/Museum in Odense, Denmark. It is such a wonderful space that is still being finished. It is already worth the visit though, and next summer when the nice weather hits it will be very impressive.
Make sure to check it out!
We also eat some traditional Danish food at a restaurant before heading out of town.

A new enjoyable video, as always. When you say Danish words (like "tarteletter") it is very noticeable how your pronounciation has improved a lot.
A thing I really enjoy with your videos, is how they make me see Denmark from a different perspective. It is enlightening to discover things one would otherwise never think about.

H.C. has always been one of my favorite authors, despite/or maybe bc of? the fact that his fairy tales don't always have a happy ending 💗🥺

You are really progressing in your danish, especially the word endings like in tartelett(er) and Odens(e) is loosing the american sounds like hard R's, the only thing I could really point a finger at was the hard "D" in Odense when its really a soft "D" sound. Very impressed by your improvement. :) Love you guys and you chill representation of the american moving to denmark storytelling and exploring the world I have grown to take forgranted for so many years making it new again
First of all: I love your videos :-) And then: May I recommend you to go to the Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro in Copenhagen? There you can find many Danish celebrities buried, which are also known in the USA - including Søren Kirkegaard, Niels Bohr and Hans Christian Andersen. I think that could be an interesting video for your friends and family back in the US?
I went to school on Nørrebro and we would often walk around there, it’s such a great place.
Also all the plants, bushes and trees are from all across the world. Mostly brought in by trading sailors. If i remember correctly one of the trees between H.C Andersens grave and Niels Bohr's is from South America and is the only of its kind in Nothern Europe and is home to a specific bird species that only lives there for like 3 months a year before it flies south of sahara.
My Mormor was born in Odense in 1873 ..I would like to seethe new museum. Have seen the old one.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇩🇰🇩🇰❤️❤️
This new place looks so much better than the old museum. You made me want to go see it.

IT WAS A BEAUTIFULLY PLACE HOUSE ,NOW MUSEUM in ODENSE , HE WAS BORN And GROWN UP ,WHEN HE WAS A BOY .
I AM PROUD OF THAT HE IS FROM DENMARK ,ODENSE. So MANY PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD , DO LOVE HIM AND HIS FAIYTALES .

As a citizen of Odense I find it hilarious that we made the whole identity of the city about him when he clearly got the hell out of here as soon as he was old enough to do so.
We went to visit the museum too this fall holiday. It was a bit lacking for us, but that was probably also cause we had two somewhat tired kids with us (age 9 and 7), so we did not have as much focus to really immerse ourselves into the experience and read all the stuff. But I got to show up my memory of fairytales, bit show off-ish, but still - I have all this information in my head, might as well use it just now and then.
We just returned from Odense today after spending the day with "magical days" which happens every fall holiday. I would really recommend that - especially with kids. We got to make our own wands at the wood cutter, got a guided tour of the mystical Odensen in the Volvo bus from 1966 and so many other things. Not to mention all the cosplayers and actors that are walking the streets today and tomorrow. So if you have time, I'd recommend another visit.
It used to be a Harry Potter festival, but they were told they could not use that name anymore. It has not prevented the whole thing to be a bit like walking around Diagon Alley. with Hogwarts scarves, cloaks, wizards and witches walking around. If you have the time, give it a visit.
My daughter and I also went during this "soft opening" without the audio. Like you, we'll definitely visit again after the soft opening ends.

I went quite a few weeks ago when they had just opened. There's been clearly quite a few changes already, both inside and outside of the museum. They were using the audio tour initially but it wasn't working too well and at times was a little confusing, so I can see why they've chosen to not use it for the moment. As you say, he was prolific and so many of our childhood fairytales were written by him, but he was also a very complex person. Great review. It is also worth pointing out that the central train station is only a few minutes walk to the museum also, with regular trains from Copenhagen.

Ha yeah the auto subtitles are odd sometimes. I wish I had time to go through and fix them, but it can make for something funny :).
Thank you for a lovely video. As I sit here on a grey October Sunday in Oslo, missing Denmark, I was really taken by some of those wonderful exhibits. That mechanical bird was wonderous!

I always recomment people to keep away until 2023 or 2024 when it all should be done ( if they can keep their schedule which they sofar havent been able to on many of the larger things.

I don't know if it's too late. But have you tried Djurs Sommerland? They have some fun rollercoasters and they really embraced Halloween 🎃 this year, with like 30 thousand pumpkins all over the park.

@Josh and Miranda - I can't remember if you guys are 'Spa-people' - but if you are, my gf and I will wholeheartedly recommend going to the spa at Great Northern on Fyn. It is probably the most complete and impressive spa experience in Denmark. (not having tried every single one of them - but having tried A LOT).

We did get some from a local bakery and shot a future try it on Tuesday. I can’t say how it was made though, all new to me :).

have you ever been to Elkhorn Iowa? it got really popular here in Denmark a couple years ago because it is an american city but it is very danish, they even have æbleskiver :P
I haven’t, it is pretty far from places I’ve been. And Iowa hasn’t been too appealing for me, except for the Field of Dreams movie location, need to go there one day :).

When I went to the "soft opening" in August, I got to try audio guide and it's narrated by a lady and H. C. Andersen (not the real person) Unfortunately it didn't work in an optimal way, which is probably why you didn't get to try it. However you got to visit H. C. Andersen's home, which was closed off when I went. 😊
Ah, yeah they had written guides for us. But I appreciate the reduced cost and ability to come back later. They are handling it pretty well.

-but you got to remember it was very poor harsh conditions when he lived there, so HC Andersen left to go to Copenhagen when he got old enough, and that is where his career started

1. You pronounce the D in Odense as a hard D. Its a soft D - in the local dialect it can become so soft it becomes silent.
2. Were you aware you could also visit HCA's childhood home where he lived with his parents age 2 to 14 ? Its about a kilometer from the HCA museum.
3. Given the interest you have displayed in historic things, you might also be interested in visiting "Den Fynske Landsby" (a living history museum where many historic rural buildings have been moved (taken down and put together again as they were) to, or the Saint Knuths Cathedral, where you can see his and his brothers bones on display (they were lynched by an angry mob in the church where they had sought refuge) - some consider him the last viking king.
Many of the HC Andersen fairytales are quite sad actually. The mermaid doesn't have a happy ending and he actually rewrote it by adding some more at the end. But ofc Disney needs happy endings, so the kids will like it. 🙂 🧜♀️
They are! I always tell people how dark the actual fairytales are. I took a class in Folk and Fairytales in college and it's really interesting to read the actual stories. Some of them are really graphic and the characters have quite terrible endings. The works of Charles Perrault and The Grimm Brothers are equally dark - M

I’ve never seen this Danish meal raw before, always cooked minced meat. It isn’t tartare, though that would seem more Parisian.

This has become a bastardized and Disneyfied experience, once the old part of the house contained the furniture and belongings of HC Andersen, now its a interactive nightmare show and the most real experience happens in the small streets where the house is located.
Why on earth did they serve the pariserbøf on a "møllehjul" ? Worst possible choice of bread for "pariserbøf"
