  • Holographic acoustic elements for manipulation of levitated objects by Asier Marzo, Sue Ann Seah, Bruce W. Drinkwater, Deepak Ranjan Sahoo, Benjamin Long and Sriram Subramanian is published in Nature Communications.
Caption: Acoustic holograms are projected from a flat surface and contrary to traditional holograms, they exert considerable forces on the objects contained within. The acoustic holograms can be updated in real-time to translate, rotate and combine levitated particles enabling unprecedented contactless manipulators such as tractor beams.

Isn't it ironic that there's no sound in the video? :D

+Bojan Matic I'm willing to bet it sounds absolutely terrible. They said they use sound waves in the Mhz range, up to Khz, so very much within the human hearing range. Those sonic tweezers probably sound fucking awful.

    Smashing demonstration!
Now I'm hoping that this will get developed so that I can have my gall stones smashed.

So... if we can use this to push or pull objects, could we use this to make levitation devices like, say, hoverboards (back to the future) or hover cars (like in the original star wars movie, the one that hovers about 2 feet off the ground)? I imagine it would only be a matter of sufficiently powerful speakers, frequency, and power supply.

That is correct, the biggest problem would be the power supply.

      +xingx355 why?

+Lesser Because sound doesn't propagate through the vacuum of space, at least I assume that's the reason he was referring to.
