When i was a driving around in the eighties i would have never believed that 700hp was so cheap and accessible.
300 hp was$$$
1500 hp is the new 700hp now days
Fuel injection and turbos go together like Chinese food and chocolate pudding, er, cocaine and waffles, um, peanut butter and ladies! 20 years ago back home we had a 700 horse club. There were 3 original members and we were all roots blown big blocks and went from 750- 1000hp+, we had an honorary member with a pro-charger. Man, it would have killed us to give jackets to small block guys, let alone imports.😫 It's a brave new world!

Well of course not as the Ls debuted in 96.
In today's episode, Richard shows us how to get a turbo junkyard LS using our $600 stimulus
I think I can do 1000 hp for $1000
Shhhh don't tell my wife
@@richardholdener1727 great idea for a new year's special episode
Didn't you see Trump's speech, what a scam. We're not getting $600 any time soon. 2.5 million to count amberjack what a joke

Richard is so good. No goofy music, and he's not trying to be a comedian. Solid content.
Thank you Richard. I just found this video. Got to meet you briefly at LS Fest this past weekend. Wish I could have stayed and chatted about the V12. Kid wanted to keep looking at the cars.
thnx for stopping by
I love how Richard is so practical. Knowing that the turbo and not the manifold is the limiting flow factor is crucial to know. Thanks.
Finally I can make my own Super Ritchie turbo kit. Thanks Richard!
PATENT PENDING
Ive asked you last week on your live qa to make a diy video on setting up a turbo and you actually came through!!!!
You deserve a hell of alot more subs
Happy to help!
Thanks for all you do, Rich, as a young hot rodder learning the lay of the land your content is invaluable to me. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday!!!
AND TO YOU AND YOURS
Richard.....I know this is an older vid, but you gave us a mountain of information!!....just an excellent video Richard, i really appreciate you taking the time and effort getting into so much detail, thank you sir!....absolutely one of the best "home built boost/turbo set ups on YT today....great job and appreciate your detail to the build, simply the best Richard!!....Thank you sir!
you are spreading the knowledge as thick as frozen peanut butter as always richard thank you
Richard you are totally great helping people with true common sense. ty
Thanks Richard, for showing us broke guys how to go fast for cheap. You are getting people kicked out of tracks every day lol

YES-THEY ALSO ACCEPT PIZZA!
Thank you for all you do. Merry Christmas Richard.
By far the best "how to turbo a LS on the cheap" vid. Great info- thank you.
Man videos like this give my so much more hope in my build.
I have a buddy who's cousin is an engineer for GM. I guess he helped design the "VORTEC" engines, and was specialised in flow rates , etc. I can remember my buddy and I arguing, about how his cousin told him that the stock manifolds and heads on LS engines were USUALLY better flowing than ANYTHING aftermarket . After watching and learning from a bunch of these videos, maybe that guy was right. Seems like they engineered these heads and manifolds so super duper well, and it's just obvious, but who knows . Lol,, peace
Richard you are an absolute wealth of information!!! Thank you brother 👍👍...
Merry Christmas to you and yours Rich. !
Richard you're my hero!
That was an EXCELLENT DIY TURBO VIDEO. I have a good baseline of info to start with. great job.
I’ve just found your channel after researching ls builds for my wife’s 57 Chevy. I love your info , she doesn’t know it yet but I’ll be adding a turbo lol
This info is GOLD! thank you.
Low key name dropping David Freiburger.
Great information thank you.
Gracias Richard por compartir ese conocimiento. Thank you Richard for sharing that knowledge.
Merry Christmas Rich,,Thank You for Great Videos
Why does this video come out the day after I decide to build my own kit instead of buying one. This is perfect.
Thank for all helpful information you've gave a lot of us great ideas Merry Christmas
Very good low buck direction!
Excellent information, thanks
Thank you for all the great information!!
This is the winning combination iwas looking for and it will save me money by keeping my stock exhaust
Awsome video. I know what ull be doing over the holidays. Merry Christmas rich. Thanks for all the great knowledge 👍
Thanks Richard. I'm a nos Ls car guy. Matter fact I own a 2000 z28 mystic teal green. Ls based stock suspension grudge car. This really helps alot. It's no use in fighting turbos are the future. Now I know what to do to make the hp
I want thanks. Gm ls lt FTW.
It's a good idea to keep the drain high in the pan away from the sump. Keeps the line from backing up and causing problems.
Perfect timing on this video. Im about to build a low buck ls and 2v 4.6 kit for some of my shitboxes
Hi there, all of your videos are great, awesome help always, thankyou!!
You are Awesome for this.thnk you from Kelowna bc Canada
Great stuff, nice tips. Merry Christmas btw
You might try to Make a video making the turbo kit step by step from scratch. Also note where you picked up parts and prices I think it may be a big hit. I would thumbs up ;)
Professor horsepower, I love this channel! 😎
Love this stuff!! Thank you for all you do!! Merry Christmas and a happy new year!!!
Same to you!
Richard, there is a RUclips channel out of Canada called the house of boost. The guy who runs that channel is an absolute Master at low Buck turbo installations on LS Motors. A couple of years ago he did a complete series where he bought a Chevy Malibu out of a junkyard, and use all junkyard parts to put together a 10 second car. He did it on an absolute shoestring budget. I don't know if you're familiar with his channel, but it's really really good stuff. Give it a watch, and if you like his content, give him a shout out.
very informative..Love all your vids
Thank you.
Merry Christmas.
Take care
THNX AND MERRY XMAS
Awesome video richard!!
This probably works great for you on the dyno and there are a lot of people that use factory manifolds short-term. I have 8 years/60k miles on my sloppy combo turbo LS. For me the factory exhaust manifold flanges and gaskets would not hold up well to turbocharger back pressure. The first six years I constantly fought gasket replacement. I decked the flanges...did everything. I switched to V-Bands on both sides using the off-the-shelf hooker manifold kit and have no issues. I guess if someone is on an extreme budget I would also tell them to use the factory manifolds but if they plan to put long-term years and driving on the combination I would only recommend V bands.
I also had constant problems with china WGs. No problems with china turbo though.
Best solution, 29 dollar pair of 2.5" vbands welded onto the stock manifolds. Cheap and easy.
@@fbm314 Yeah that's what I did too, works great.
I’m in
@@stevenabbott7603 if you want to do it really nicely put the manifold on a "heat plate" and get it hot first, then weld it while it's still hot. But yeah the OEM cast manifolds weld really nicely.
@@fbm314 for people that have a set of factory manifolds that fit their selected swap chassis and the capability to weld the v bands on I think that's great.
Ls motors have great flowing exhaust manifolds !!!
a dontbsme ls build like these are the best. i need a gt45
I've watched a video of a guy fighting his wastegate. They had a merge collector on a k24 and a single 45mm gate. With the wastegate removed they had 9psi boost, someone didn't think about that when they assembled their header. It's nice you included that on your video.
THEY REMOVED THE GATE-JUST AN OPEN HOLE?
@@richardholdener1727 ya, it was a burns collector and the branch that fed the wastegate came off at a really bad angle (like 120° from direction of flow) and it was way smaller than the 1.75" primaries. It peaked at 9psi I should say, it didn't make any boost until 5000rpm. With the wastegate installed the lowest it would go at 100% duty cycle once it was spooled was 14psi. They disassembled the wastegate to make sure it still had a five pound spring in it.
Great video! does lack fuel system recommendations
Valuable info like always 👍🏻
How about a video on boost vs octane.
It’s great to have 20 psi of boost but what if I can only get 93 or 91.
What if I don’t want to buy my fuel out of a drum.
Richard uses E85, no need for drum bought fuel...its under 90 octane.
@@MrJackson66 pump e85 is 105 octane, drum e85 is 114

I love this video
It’s more about the normal guy who has skills but can’t afford heads, cam, and all the other upgrades. We will dream about them but……….
Lol,not in the family budget
I'd love this in my wife's 2001 Suburban 5.3L grocery getter!

A great video yet again Richard!
Do you have, or could you piece together the video material to make...something detailed about home made turbo merge flanges? Like a two into one for divided T4, common feed T4 etc. And more pointers about wastagate location considerations in an actual vehicle..?
I’ve built two turbo kits myself and this was the most challenging part for me.
Thought...could you have Mr Matt (Sloppy Mechanics) Happel as a guest...he’s built plenty. And I bet the outcome for both of you, as well as all of us would be great!
Rock on Richard!
Merry Christmas to you and your family. 🎄🎅🏼
Hi Richard, another good video and I want to use the previlege we have to be able to write you to wish you a happy year 2021 and more success in your life, Thank you.

Nice video, now I want to do something
Great info! Thanks
Thanks for this vídeo, it's exactly Made for My salary, i'm working on My 93 foxbody ls swap
Awesome video brother God bless
Great vid
GREAT VID!!
the $200 turbo headers for LS are great if u flip them over so they run up and forward. just relocate the coil packs somewhere on the fenderwell or on the frame so they dont have to go around the tubes. works great for my combo👍🏼👍🏼
That's how those headers are meant to be ran!
Have you ever compared any log style manifolds to your low cost one?
Thanks Richard. Going to do this on my 5.2 Mopar.
I had always wanted to turbo my 5.2 in my Ram. Now it may be my 5.3 Silverado.
How can I get around the computer though.
@@Joebauers2505 Check out racingramfam channels "whitie" build with 5.2
Hey Richard all these budget builds. You should di a battle of name brand vs budget wastegates / blow off valves. And your recommendations... non adjustable vs manual vs electric and the like. Definitely would be very insightful
Muy buen video 👍
If you compare the ls truck exhaust manifold to any manifolds from 60’s engine you will see a lot of difference in how the size and internal bends run .
Hi Richard im new to your channel, I was wondering if you had a video on how to prep a junkyard LS motor for a turbo or TT application? Love the content.
Cheers
Thank you
Love your videos...what do you think about the On3 Performance turbo kits for the fox body with an Ls Swap VS the CX kits? Any info would be greatly appreciated
I love the idea & power benefits of a turbo setup, but it looks like a plumbing nightmare. Especially if you have a tight engine bay to begin with.
Its not
It really is a case of stuff it in this end anyway u can get it there and BAM u get big power
What about intercooler testing. Will the same size intercooler work the same across all brands? Difference between 3", 4", and 5" cores, and at what power level is each necessary.
Hooker's LS Turbo mount manifolds are the ticket, in my opinion. Not el cheapo, like your example here, but it allows easy installation of a hair dryer type power adder, for sure! If I go LS & Turbo in an S-10 build, I plan to go that route...
THOSE FIT AND WORK WELL-UP TO AROUND 800 HP, THEN THE MERGE BECOMES RESTRICTIVE
Preach it man, you can build whatever you want on the stand, but getting it to run in the car is way harder. Glad you are budget minded.
Wait a minute, your speaking to fast lol. You forgot to say check your hood clearance when test fitting the turbo lol. Hope no one ends up like me where the hood doesn't fit lol
They look badass with the turbo peaking out anyway lol
Pfwweh....don’t need no stinking hood
Sounds like an easy way to reach my HP goals...The thing is I have a feeling the eBay T4 on my little PI 4.62v might make more than just the small bump to 300hp ..it would probably double it to around 425 ish if I could find a cheap way to tune it.
A scaled Maf with injectors gets you most the way there. There is a couple editors on the market that let you edit the tables. TwEECer I think is one of them
Richard. When are you doing the part 4 of the ford cylinder head shootout ?
Guru thank you !
Perfekt start "kit" I 👌
Can you do a do it yourself kit with the single GT45 with a carbed 360 magnum on the dyno? I know you picked one up and this is the build I'd like to do.
Hey Richard what happened to the L99 4.3 v8? Was hoping to see more on that.
I have a question. I have a f350 460 and want to turbo it. Could use some advise on the EFI
I’ll upgrade on fuel delivery and injectors no problem. But how would you suggest I hook up the force induction to the intake. The intake has a strange hat bolted to the top where the throttle body is.
Seems like I’m better throwing out the intake and injectors and go with a carb intake and sniper EFI. But the thing is that way may be ye easy way out but not cost effective. Because what if later on I wane more hp I’m limited to 600 hp out put of the holly sniper. Ant suggestion
Richard, thanks for your information! Banks used to sell a small Jeep 4.0 turbo kit(it's been disscontinued) but it was small and intercoolers were an option. Designed for offroad, can you give me an idea of how to replicate a small low power improvement for the Jeep 4.0? Like 50 to 75 HP improvement, as I don't want to overpower my drivetrain? Thanks You!
SMALL TURBO AND LOW BOOST
Right on
I am interested in finding out what difference the inner cooler makes. I would like to run a turbo but don't want to put holes in my core support.
I would love to see episodes of how to build a high RPM LS combination without destroying it!?# LQ4,LS1# I am coming from high rev Honda's #
I’d be curious to see a DIY turbo kit in a truck, where you use the factory exhaust into the box and have a box mount turbo. That would really be fully half assed.
Dude you can easily mail a turbo in any gmt800 or gmt900 platform. There is plenty of room in the stock engine bay. Cut the exhaust to 3in away from the downpipe flange flip the headers around swap the driver side to the passenger side and vice versa. Then use those stubs from the y-pipe to create your new turbo up pipe. There is plenty of room on the passenger side especially once you get the factory air cleaner out of the way you can also easily go to a smaller coolant Reservoir to increase the amount of available space
Richard, do flex seal vs gorilla tape on that tape together one. Would be entertaining
11:00+ min in you said to get the biggest air2air intercooler you can fit in your application. I just see a video an they insisted that going to big on your intercooler can decrease boost by 2-4 lbs in some cases. Smallest to biggest intercooler test video maybe.. and maybe 100+ mm turbo on stock manifold hotside
did you mention blow off valves? did I miss that? which would you spend more money on - wastegate or blow off valve? or both?
Awesome thanks for the video, with a junk yard engine, would you spend the time/money to gap the rings on the engine for a turbo.. ?
Probably so if you plan on running high boost pressure(I don't know the exact number where ring butting becomes an issue)and if you don't have the time and money to be replacing or repairing engines on a regular basis.
Would the gt45 work on my l92 with Ls3 intake in my big land yacht 1973 Buick centurion for about 650hp? I have the fahler speed turbo log and was just gonna do a under engine crossover!
We had been 4.50@158 with stock manifolds @ 2700lbs in the 1/8
that is plenty of power!
A turbo can bolt directly to the original manifold with an adaptor, and small turbos are cheaper, so twin turbo is easier.
I gotta get my turbo fabed up and going.
How do we tune it? Or get a tune for it? Looking to do this to my 06 Tahoe😁
Hey Richard im so glad you made this video, i watch most of the ls based videos.
Im very much a do it myself person.
Am i seeing correctly that the stock manifolds are just flipped forward on this application? And work correctly
yes-just flipped (but no accessories)
Actually curious: would factory manifolds (not optimized for high flow) help a turbo spool quicker? There's the same volume of air flowing through them, but with more 'obstruction to flow', so the pressure will be higher. Whereas with some nice aftermarket headers, they flow much better, but at a lower pressure.
Obviously this wouldn't work well for higher engine speeds, but would this be helpful to low end torque numbers?
That is a very small part of the equation, although it does matter to a small degree. The big factor is exhaust housing size and how close the turbo is to the engine. That's why factory turbo set-ups try to get the turbo as close as possible, and size the turbo for the daily driven powerband, just large enough not to ramp up back pressure under extended full boost. This information is from a couple of turbo books and Richards videos.
