Very interesting interview from 6:17 onwards. He wrote the song very quickly, in a matter of days. The song was written only for the movie, became a single, and then a big hit. It wasn't common to be singing about America in '79, esp. after Tehran and the hostage situation, based on his response to the interviewer. It blew up in '80 and '81 and is a modern standard.
I remember one of our news stations did a homage of the hostages coming back to America with this song as the background. Epic!!!!
@@luztirado As someone adopted from the Philippines this song has special meaning for me. My father played it for me when I was 4 in the summer of 1988. I've always loved Neil Diamond from a young age!
