Respiratory Therapist here. I have took care of many patients that are on mechanical ventilation, it is indeed very uncomfortable for many patients imagine having a machine force a breath for you when you don’t want it at that time. Another thing PEEP is usually used to help stint the alveoli open to improve oxygenation. Many patients can talk while having a tracheostomy tube in provided they have the correct equipment (Passy-Muir valve) and patients normally would say it is more comfortable being trach vs ETT intubation.
One of my triplets had to go through this last year when I delivered. He fought hard for a month but sadly things got worse. He's in a better place though and I'm glad that he doesn't have to suffer anymore
I've been on life support before. I was only on it for 24 hours because my heart stopped to ensure my survival. It's like putting your life in the hands of a soulless machine. It's a horrible experience that removes your independence. I hope I never go through it again. I was 13 at the time
My son spent 36hrs in a medically induced coma, he did nothing for himself. Intubation was horrible but seeing it come out was worse. He was septic and after 36hrs came out ok, 5yrs after he is perfect and happy.
From an abscess in my arm that I went to the hospital to get it taken out, I was put into a medical induced coma for almost a week because my blood became sepsis and I had walking pneumonia on top of that. Luckily I came out ok but it was definitely a scary time

That last thing I remember is falling asleep on an ambulance cot. The next thing I remember is waking up in the ICU with tubes in my nose and arms.

I was put in a drug induced coma after I was in F4 tornado. I laid on top of my 2 lil boys ages 3 & 6 saving them. I “coded” 7x in 2 different hospitals. Had 2 collapsed lungs, so I hardly could breath Several injuries to my back, crushing my T12, 5 broken ribs Severe head trauma. Doctors thought they would end up putting me on Life Support. 150 staples to my head alone Paralyzed from waist down They told my family if I were to live best case scenario I would be a “vegetable” living in a Nursing Home the rest of my life. I was only 34yrs old. (BUT I saved my boys lives so that is all that mattered to me) I would always take my ET, respirator off while still in the coma. After doing it a handful of times they took me out of coma. I was evening trying to communicate while with family by taking my husbands arm and “air” writing asking about our boys. 7 days later I was flown to Shepard Center in Atlanta. I amazed my doctors every step of the way proving them wrong at every turn.
I was intubated for three weeks due to severe pneumonia. One interesting thing about it is that despite being in a medically induced coma, I still dreamed. VIVIDLY dreamed. Its been 2 years since I had this done and I still remember the dreams.
My burning question is if you can escape dreams in a coma? I suffer a lot with negative dreams in which I can escape by waking. In a coma...there's no escape??

I’ve had an NG tube and it’s just uncomfortable. You get used to it after a few hours tho. It’s also dependent on the type of feeding you’re on. I had both 24 hour and supplemental when I was transitioning back into eating actual food. It’s not that bad

My girlfriend had to be put into a medical coma after her body rejected her bone marrow transplant when she was dealing with she second round leukemia as a child. She was on life support for a while. Doctors even said she wasn't going make it and began to ask her mom if they would like to pull her off. They said no. And a few weeks later, she woke up. She still had to have machines help for a while after she came out the coma
Nurse here. Overall a very well thought out video. Gotta correct the defibrillation is like jumping a dead battery though. A stopped heart will not respond to defib. It’s only used for irregular rhythms. Biggest myth in med shows for decades
After a near fatal car wreck in 2013, I was on life support for about 9 weeks as I came out if a medically induced coma...thankfully I fully recovered from that though I still live in near constant pain from my legs having rods in them.
I went through this and a coma, I need a refresher sometimes on what I went through. Never wanna do it again. Covid is literally my worst fears all in one. Not breathing, being in a coma, and blood clots. Oh no no no!
Imagine being in an induced coma on a ventilator but you are actually aware. Imagine hearing people talk but because you have no idea what’s happening, you feel like you’re being tortured. I surmised I had been kidnapped and didn’t know why. Even when the ventilator was removed I wrote on a pad one word, “kidnapped”. Then when I could barely talk, I cussed the doctors and nurses for hours. They wouldn’t give me water or even ice for 28 hours. I felt like a man dying in the desert. I started hallucinating seeing bugs and flys all over me. I had flashbacks of being on the ventilator again and the room would turn green, then purple. I can tell you after being on a ventilator for ten days that there are worse things than dying. After 5 months being home I now suffer from something called PIC. My short term memory is not good but I remember things from 30 years ago just like they just happened. I actually got in an argument with my wife over something that happened 30 years ago because to me it just happened. When she was about to leave me, I couldn’t remember our argument. I told my personal doctor that they kept me alive but they didn’t save my life.
But dead people shouldn't come back to life it’s against nature. Not being disrespectful or anything but can't even understand how someone comes to life after they die because the soul starts to leave the body when you stop breathing.
my grandma wasn’t on life support but was on hospice and passed away 11/19/20 it was a hard thing to watch and things had just gotten worse with her battle with alzheimers and dementia
I was in a coma on full life support for 4 weeks, I had some crazy dreams they don’t feel like dreams they feel like real memories. I had collapsed lungs, double kidney failure, pneumonia and serotonin syndrome. I’m now back at work but unfortunately I’ve got epilepsy so far 17 months seizure free.
I am 100% tube fed at home due to a condition called Gastroparesis. That means my stomach is paralyzed. So im fed through a surgically implanted tube (G-J tube)directly to my intestines...... I also have a device implanted in my chest called a port (specifically mine is a pediatric power port). This is a perminent IV line in my chest that gives me IV fluids and medications 24/7. If it wasnt for these two life changing treatments I wouldnt be alive! Even though I wish i didnt need them, i am eternally thankful for the life i have due to them 💉💜

A little over a year ago I suffered a cardiac arrest and kidney failure due to Sepsis. I was on life support, in a medically induced coma and on dialysis for over 48 hours. What still bothers me on a daily basis is not knowing exactly what happened to me while in the ICU. It's a complete blank and that is driving me crazy 😢
On new years day My wonderful dad was on life support. It only prolonged his suffering as blood flowed through ventilator tubes . It was the most horrible sight I've seen. He died jan 1st 2022 at 2:15 p.m.

I would like to add a little mention about TPN: it is possible to be put on long-term TPN and in these cases, the TPN is delivered in a PIC line through the chest and into the heart. This may be done due to cancers that cause the major or entire removal of the stomach/small intestine, as well as individuals with gastroparesis whose G.I. tracts have totally shut down and G-Tubes & NG Tubes are no longer options or have been tried and failed.
I thought I was dreaming still when I woke up to a breathing tube down my throat and I couldn’t move after a high speed motorcycle accident. But you’re right, that pain reminds you you’re alive.

I was in life support, after my ACDF surgery for 4 days June 4-8 because my lungs filled with liquid after surgery. And to be farely honest, the worst thing happened to me is when i suddenly woke up. I didn't know what happened or going on right that moment. For a split second i thought i'm already dead as there was darkness (ICU room lights were off) and i cant speak or cry (because of the tubes). And the rest are blank.
after my moms massive heart attack, she was on life support and it was so traumatic. she was so swollen. hooked up to all these tubes. i hated to see her that way
My grandpa had cancer 10 years ago. He had to go on life support. He needed to have lots of chemotherapy, which caused him to have a loss of hearing in both ears. He had to have a tracheotomy tube, in order to breathe. Wish him well.

Got off life support May 5, 2022. Had a non epileptic seizure episode where I was administered to high of a dosage of Ativan which caused me to stop breathing in the ED. I was then transferred to ICU where they put me on life support. I was only on it for 24hrs. My throat is messed up a bit, I feel out of breath all the time, and my stomach is upset some of the time. I have flashbacks of the times I due remember. I am glad I survived, but it's a struggle.
I had two wisdom teeth removed today, they hooked all kinds of stuff in me, some kind of electrodes, blood pressure thingy midgige, oxygen mobober, IV etc, got out and my jaw felt like I dropped it from an airplane! speaking of which I need to take i pill for swelling and infection in a few mins
I got all 4 of mine removed and as soon as the hooked me up on those substances I was out. Anesthesia be like that tho. Also it gets better. It took me abou 4 weeks to eat in the back of my mouth, but I was also being careful. Don't want dry sockets
@@johnpaulabocad6941 Well your awake kinda. You don't know your awake, and you have no memory whatsoever of the procedure. It matters what anesthesia you use. There is general for basically knocking you out, IV which is where you get an IV that keeps you awake but your unaware of your surroundings, (which is what I had) and local anesthesia which is where you get a numbing shot or numbing substances on your gums for removal of teeth. Mostly local is used for tooth fillings tho.
I spent 3 days on life support after having 3 failed surgeries in 5 days. I don't remember anything from the time I was put to sleep until I woke up with a tube down my throat. I remember throwing up when they removed the tube. I remember that the first thing I wanted to do was to get out of the bed but my body was too weak. The nurse helped me out of bed and into a chair after a couple of hours. But being on the life support was like being asleep without dreaming.
I've been on life support for 10 years and will need it the rest of my life. I was in a coma for the first 60 days though and last thing i remember was having labored breathing then..BOOM..i wake up 60 days later. First thing i wanted was a drink and finally got one a week later.

Again didn’t feel a thing but I wasn’t allowed to play rough cuz it would fall out and when it did, putting it back in was really uncomfortable

As a Respiratory Therapist for the past 21 years I approve of this message! It bugs us when people say “respirator” instead of “ventilator”. It’s kind of like saying a venomous snake is poisonous. It’s not the same thing. Otherwise great video. I’m the person who places that ET tube down your trachea and sets you up on the ventilator with appropriate settings that are specific to both your body type and disease process. (BTW, in my opinion of working with patients that are micro-preemies to large old adults, it is not nice to not have anything less than 3 - 5 cmH2O pressure of PEEP on your vent settings. This helps keep your alveoli nice and inflated while exhaling. Breathing through a fairly small tube is not comfortable and PEEP and pressure support help overcome the tube resistance.)
I had a severe traumatic brain injury and couldn’t breathe on my own so they put me into a coma for 2 days and on life support, so I had a breathing machine, tubes going into my veins for medicine, and a catheter. So my experience being on it is, I don’t remember, I wasn’t conscious. All I remember from it was waking up and feeling staples on my shaved skull

If he can beat the cancer, then after 2 years he would then be able to have the transplant....😔 Any prayers would be welcomed!

I was given an opportunity to test drive, a lot of the options listed in the video after an op went 🍐 in the Army. When the confusion and intense pain weakened after I woke up, I had a type of DNR put in my file to spare my family the guilt of turning off life support or the burden of medical costs for upkeep.
"What is it actually like to be on life support?" Well it's like having one single dream in life and being sooooo close but your mom refuses to let you grasp that dream and finally be happy. Just pull the plug and give me what I want.
I am 38 years old. I live my life on TPN. I have a central line to my heart and I get my nutrition this way. My digestive system does not work anymore. But I live 😊
My dad had the LVAD. He passed away last Nov waiting on a heart transplant😢I miss him everyday.

My wonderful dad was on life support. It only prolonged his suffering as blood flowed through ventilator tubes . It was the most horrible sight I've seen. He died jan 1st 2022 at 2:15 p.m.

When people pass on life support it is sad to never be able to say another goodbye and hear them respond. You can only hope you did the best by them.
I would like to add a little mention about TPN: it is possible to be put on long-term TPN and in these cases, the TPN is delivered in a PIC line through the chest and into the heart. This may be done due to cancers that cause the major or entire removal of the stomach/small intestine, as well as individuals with gastroparesis whose G.I. tracts have totally shut down and G-Tubes & NG Tubes are no longer options or have been tried and failed.
Being in a coma or on life support is the same as being asleep. Until you wake up in pain
I thought I was dreaming still when I woke up to a breathing tube down my throat and I couldn’t move after a high speed motorcycle accident. But you’re right, that pain reminds you you’re alive.

I was in life support, after my ACDF surgery for 4 days June 4-8 because my lungs filled with liquid after surgery. And to be farely honest, the worst thing happened to me is when i suddenly woke up. I didn't know what happened or going on right that moment. For a split second i thought i'm already dead as there was darkness (ICU room lights were off) and i cant speak or cry (because of the tubes). And the rest are blank.
idk if it was life support but my grandma was brain dead and had a machine keeping her breathing. it’s so heartbreaking to see
after my moms massive heart attack, she was on life support and it was so traumatic. she was so swollen. hooked up to all these tubes. i hated to see her that way
My grandpa had cancer 10 years ago. He had to go on life support. He needed to have lots of chemotherapy, which caused him to have a loss of hearing in both ears. He had to have a tracheotomy tube, in order to breathe.

Got off life support May 5, 2022. Had a non epileptic seizure episode where I was administered to high of a dosage of Ativan which caused me to stop breathing in the ED. I was then transferred to ICU where they put me on life support. I was only on it for 24hrs. My throat is messed up a bit, I feel out of breath all the time, and my stomach is upset some of the time. I have flashbacks of the times I due remember. I am glad I survived, but it's a struggle.
I had two wisdom teeth removed today, they hooked all kinds of stuff in me, some kind of electrodes, blood pressure thingy midgige, oxygen mobober, IV etc, got out and my jaw felt like I dropped it from an airplane! speaking of which I need to take i pill for swelling and infection in a few mins

I got all 4 of mine removed and as soon as the hooked me up on those substances I was out. Anesthesia be like that tho. Also it gets better. It took me abou 4 weeks to eat in the back of my mouth, but I was also being careful. Don't want dry sockets

@@johnpaulabocad6941 Well your awake kinda. You don't know your awake, and you have no memory whatsoever of the procedure. It matters what anesthesia you use. There is general for basically knocking you out, IV which is where you get an IV that keeps you awake but your unaware of your surroundings, (which is what I had) and local anesthesia which is where you get a numbing shot or numbing substances on your gums for removal of teeth. Mostly local is used for tooth fillings tho.

I spent 3 days on life support after having 3 failed surgeries in 5 days. I don't remember anything from the time I was put to sleep until I woke up with a tube down my throat. I remember throwing up when they removed the tube. I remember that the first thing I wanted to do was to get out of the bed but my body was too weak. The nurse helped me out of bed and into a chair after a couple of hours. But being on the life support was like being asleep without dreaming.
I've been on life support for 10 years and will need it the rest of my life. I was in a coma for the first 60 days though and last thing i remember was having labored breathing then..BOOM..i wake up 60 days later. First thing i wanted was a drink and finally got one a week later.

I’ve had an NG tube when I stayed in the hospital for a month it didn’t feel like anything but it irritated my throat when it was taken out. And I was born pre mature and had a G tube till I was 11. Again didn’t feel a thing but I wasn’t allowed to play rough cuz it would fall out and when it did, putting it back in was really uncomfortable
i had a tracheostomy and was practically mute until i was six. i still get the heebie jeebies at the mere thought of something piercing my neck

As a Respiratory Therapist for the past 21 years I approve of this message! It bugs us when people say “respirator” instead of “ventilator”. It’s kind of like saying a venomous snake is poisonous. It’s not the same thing. Otherwise great video. I’m the person who places that ET tube down your trachea and sets you up on the ventilator with appropriate settings that are specific to both your body type and disease process. (BTW, in my opinion of working with patients that are micro-preemies to large old adults, it is not nice to not have anything less than 3 - 5 cmH2O pressure of PEEP on your vent settings. This helps keep your alveoli nice and inflated while exhaling. Breathing through a fairly small tube is not comfortable and PEEP and pressure support help overcome the tube resistance.)

I had a severe traumatic brain injury and couldn’t breathe on my own so they put me into a coma for 2 days and on life support, so I had a breathing machine, tubes going into my veins for medicine, and a catheter. So my experience being on it is, I don’t remember, I wasn’t conscious. All I remember from it was waking up and feeling staples on my shaved skull

If he can beat the cancer, then after 2 years he would then be able to have the transplant....😔 Any prayers would be welcomed!

I was given an opportunity to test drive, a lot of the options listed in the video after an op went 🍐 in the Army. When the confusion and intense pain weakened after I woke up, I had a type of DNR put in my file to spare my family the guilt of turning off life support or the burden of medical costs for upkeep.
