You can't mention the resurgence of the Belgian brewing industry in the 1980's without talking about the beer writer, Micheal Jackson. His book and TV show, The Beer Hunter, was a big reason why (especially) Americans started taking an interest in Belgian beers. Some in Belgium credit him with saving styles like Lambic and Flanders Red/Browns. Arguably, he's also the reason why we now have beer style guidelines.
The Orval that was shown being poured in the video was 'Orval Vert.' It's kegged (I assume without brett), dry-hopped, lower in alcohol, only available from the cafe near the monastery, and bloody delicious.
I dont quite buy this idea of water safety issues making beer the preferred drink. IMO, it had more to do with the calorific value of beer. You cant brew with bad water and its about 3 times per litre of beer to water used. Cheaper and more efficient to drink water drawn regularly in my view or to use wine or vinegar to disinfect water as had been the habit of Romans and Greeks...
Belguim has soo much diversity and the best beers in the world 😊
Great video! Now to go back and watch the others. BTW your book got me into home brewing :) thanks

Orval is the best beer in the world, according to the famous "waterhuis aan de bierkant" in Ghent, and i agree :)

No need for all this philosophie mate. Beer is nothing talk about, but something to talk with.
