Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers-Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.

They should make a prequel called "1916" where Schofield survives Somme, since in the plot, Schofield is a veteran from the battle of Somme.

Reminds me of Dunkirk. What a technical achievement this is. Roger Deakins is a legend.
It was FAR FAR better than Dunkirk
I didn't rate dunkirk, i went and watched 1917 last night and left feeling abit empty although it was filmed brilliantly i couldn't really get attached to the story line and i was hoping for at least one epic battle scene which didn't really happen.
@@dannykuhrt9144 yikes no.
Dunkirk didn't have enough soldiers waiting on the beach. And it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Apart from that, a forgettable movie - didn't do the heroes involved justice, in my opinion.

I also thought that it would be like Dunkirk, I was absolutely wrong, and I’m glad I was wrong. The production will leave you in awe.

One of the best movies i have ever seen after a very long time.
Even Dunkirk was better than this crap. This is literally a mediocre blockbuster with great cinematography and nothing else of substance. If it was set in 2117 during an alien invasion you probably wouldn't even want to watch it. But because it's WWI you see it as a "period drama" rather than what it actually is - a mediocre blockbuster.
@@B3RyL have you even watched it? the emotions it makes you feel are something else. its not even a blockbuster, its a grim tale about the cruel reality of war and its VERY well told.
@@B3RyL oh shut up you tosser
@@MagikarpMan No, it's a series of events that makes you go "that could not have happened" intertwined by weak character development and boring plot. The only reason you're saying it's "about the cruel reality of war" is because it's set in WWI. Set in in any other time period and you'll have a different notion. Like, set it in 2117 during a random alien invasion. Same movie, same story, same characters, same events. You'd think it's ridiculous and flat and any emotional aspect is forced and ultimately pointless. But hey, that's the difference between sci-fi and period dramas - the setting. Look past the setting and you'll see that even most Disney movies are more deserving of an Oscar than 1917.
@@B3RyL no one cares about your opinion mate its only a movie you dweeb

Mariam Otmishi yet the terrible script lmao
@@dantdt4693 The script is fantastic! George MacKay's character learns a valuable lesson which changes him by the end and his internal journey is paralleled and represented externally through certain events and images as you go...it's not super noticeable but this movie is so in harmony with itself it's actually a fucking brilliant script!
Alex Hansen I love when he says “if we’re not clever about this no one will get to your brother” and Blake replies with “I will”. Later when he’s sitting in the truck with the other soldiers they say ”you’ll never make it” and he replies with “I will”

@Alex Barrett yeah but the big thing is it doesn't make it realistic.

@Alex Barrett He's definitely a spamming shit. Look at the other threads. He's in them with the comment.
There's cgi even in the trailer
War knows no winners.
The world doesn't learn it. It will never learn. Sad.
Europe seems to have learned after WW2, for the most part.
While people rely their lives on the hands of some few bureaucrats, the fear of war will be eminent. Fight for individual freedom, fight for voluntary actions, and the world will see much less wars, much less deaths.
But some definitely loose more than others. For example Germany and USA in ww2, no doubt who was the loser there.
The war doesn't decide who is right, just who is left
It certainly has winners, those that manufacture the weapons and related war equipment and material, those that finance wars (esp for the winning side), various other interest groups that attain non-monetary gains.
Great movie. Very dry, realistic, has none of that "protagonist plot armor" bs and no clichès, at least as far as i could notice. Also when colonel Benderfield Coomerdutch in the end tells the corporal Scoffield that the troops will be sent to slaughter anyway the next morning at dawn really shows how futile that whole mission was. I like that there is no silver lining, no happy ending, just raw reality of War. Tragic.
One of the best anti-war movie i've ever seen. My all time favorite is still "Come and see". That movie messed me up for good.

Sacha Grégoire When i was going to watch it I hadn’t seen the trailer yet either, but I assumed it was about the great war by the name
ungratefulmetalpansy Well, considering the fact that I am 16 and that I know about history I would say that you would need to be born in some strange family to not know about the World Wars. I mean, I may be pretty different from the average teenager, but where I'm from at least, we're taught a lot about history in school.
@@sachagrgoire6294 you should know the fact that so called world war 1 is between only few nations France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and America. And world has way more nations to not record this caos.
Its ok if people don't know that incident.
Mr. Jashon Wasn’t it still a World War though? All I'm saying is that you should know about it if you've ever had decent history classes before. I know the number of countries that fought the war seemed small, but these countries were big. Especially Britain where the sun never sleeps or however that saying goes. The World Wars were such big historical events that it just seems strange for kids with normal education not to know about them. Plus you don’t only learn the history of your country in history class. Unless Canada as a different way of teaching?

"They're walking into a trap.... everyone will be massacred" THIS ACCURATELY DESCRIBES LITERALLY EVERY ATTACK IN FOUR YEARS OF WARFARE.
ITS A TRAP
Yeah, he says that now because it was the fourth year into that war and their replacement numbers were already getting depleted by that point. The high-ranking officers in WW1 were especially notorious for not caring about their men and treating the troops like crap, as if they were just game pieces to sacrifice. It was easy for them to not care very much because they didn’t have to charge with them across No Man’s Land. They just waited at headquarters or in the trenches while ordering their troops to all charge ahead in a human wave. Then they would just wait for more replacements to eventually repeat the same process.
J3SS3 H Incredibly simplistic of you
@@MrJH101 Very true. One idiot kiwi named Fryeberg killed thousands of Gorkhas and Mauris in Monte Cassino in the hands of German Panziers in WWII because of his stupidity. One British officer killed other few thousands in the hand of cholera in Mesopotamia due to his cowardice to move ahead.

You can generally tell when they cut when the camera pans behind something like a rock or another soldier. Of course there was that "cut to black" moment as well.
This film is a masterpiece. Absolutely incredible
I know I finally watched it at midnight oh my god way better
IAmaPersion
1917 is better than anything
@IAmaPersion Cool I'll check it out. I've of course heard of the film but actually never seen it yet
IAmaPersion
No I think my sister has
IAmaPersion
I do have it
The entire movie had like, three cuts.
@Fred Bloggs Behind the scenes, of course there were cuts. But in terms of actually watching the movie, it's like one long cut and that made it fascinating to watch.
@yumpladukfoo wow thank you captain, didn't notice that it was computer generated
Fred Bloggs
I loved it tho
I know it seems so seamless, but there actually so many clever cuts! I actually made a breakdown of it on my channel if you’re interested! :D
if you are truly looking for a one-cut movie, watch Victoria (2015), masterpiece
So I'm not usually a war movie person. This was one of the best made movies I've ever seen. It should be included in film classes.
Me either but I’m going to see it!
Never too late to become a war movie person.
You should watch Come and See that is also a great (anti) war movie
Guys and girls you can burn me but.. This film is not good. Where is the story? The plot/script is so frigin simple.
Atmosphere/technique were perfect, but the undemanding kindergarden story destroyed everything.
Oh, it WILL be.
Guaranteed.
More cuts in this trailer than the whole movie
Don Martin movie - 0
Technically not true. The edits are hidden.
@@Mrazberry I think the trailer still has more cuts/transitions
YoloJoeTheBro347 I mean other than when the stairs scene happens but that still wasn’t exactly a cut
Mickey Mouse well yeah I mean obviously you can’t shoot a movie in ONE take but it just looks that way.
"If you don't get there in time, we will lose 1,600 men." What an excellent way to set up high stakes along with time pressure. I'm sold.
Except that in WW1, especially by 1917, 1600 men was pretty much nothing. The death of 100k people would be a days battle. I think in the first month the French lost something like 250k. Sounds good, but overall was almost nothing. Unless you're one of those 1600 men or their families i suppose.
@@Scotticusmaximusmeta while I agree that 1,600 people in WW1 was just a normal day. The 100k figure in a day isn't anywhere close to true. I believe the Somme was 60k on the first day, and that was a very horrific day.
@@alextallen8019 probably a little overblown, but i was referring more to all sides and fronts, though i definitely didn't make that very clear. It was late and i was a bit drunk XD. And i certainly didn't mean to say that was a daily occurrence.
@@Scotticusmaximusmeta Still 1600 men of a brigade being wiped out in an avoidable trap in a single day would make headlines back home and still be a tragedy especially if it was avoidable.
@@ABrickInterest lol not really, pretty sure no one at home would have noticed until much later after the fact. Tens of thousands of soldiers were killed daily, 1600 isnt something that will stand out.
Imagine at the end of the movie the camera mans like “oh shoot the camera wasn’t on”
that'd be his last project as a cameraman :)
or if they mess up the last line and break character
Did you think that they were recording a youtube video? These are experts my man
@@missybarnes7400 they definitely cut in several places, when he was knocked out or anytime the camera was facing a wall
Just got home from this. It’s fucking awesome trust me
Captain Jackass I can back up his statement it was a great movie!!
@Captain Jackass yup it was a awsome movie
I don't trust strangers on the Internet who tell me to trust them.
Incredible experience indeed. Probably the best cinematic experience I've had in a long time. Roger Deakins is definitely picking up that 2nd Oscar.
john Taylor Go watch it yourself and see how amazing it is.
The last movie i watched before the lockdown began 😂
I’ve experienced the movie during lockdown
Arne De Bruijn
Same February was my last time seeing it in cinemas before the lockdown
I was going to go in April before it was released to dvd

I haven’t forgotten it since January 17th
When the trailer has more cuts than the movie itself!
This was probably one of the best if not the best movie that I have ever seen.
10/10 would recomend.
Seen it almost a year ago and I’m shocked how quick it’s gone
you need to watch more movies then

I saw it the day I had a cold but so worth it
i wouldnt say it is the best made but it was so interestingly shot and i really enjoyed that
This trailer doesn't do this movie justice.
you don't want to show the best in a trailer, do you???
@@johnmolina3284 Theirs a difference between making a trailer do the movie justice and giving a trailer the best scenes from the movie.
My favorite war movie I’ve seen so far
One of the best trailer I've ever seen..the first one..
Don Nguyen its good but it nothing can beat saving private ryan
For those who like the background music the song is called "The Wayfaring Stranger" but it hits different in the actual movie...

100 years from now there will be a movie called 2020 and it’ll be everyone on lockdown with dead empty cities and a storyline based on how it happened. Too bad none of us will be able to see it!
Edit: 2020 is definitely going to be a movie! I wonder how it’s going to turn out.

No movie has ever touched my soul like this one has.
Niels Jabben
What about the cat movie?
Party Log that movie made my soul want to kill itself
What about saving private ryan?
Chills down my spine when I read this, because me too. And I wasn’t expecting it - at all. I was lost within this film...needed an hour to sit in silence after the credits rolled, but since that’s not allowed, I just wandered out of the theatre in a daze and sat in my car for awhile. I let myself feel a lot of movies, but this one just completely gutted me.
joshua corral Saving Private Ryan is an excellent and real and chilling film in its own right, but I don’t feel like there should be a comparison between it and 1917. They’re two very different beasts.
I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to watch a movie immediately after watching it, until I saw 1917.
Watching what... The trailer?

I am an Austrian (20) and I loved this movie. I spent my summer holidays with a few very good friends from Britain, France and Italy who I love and consider my brothers - the nations who fought against Austria/Germany in WWI. I am literally crying my eyes out, because it breaks my heart thinking that just over 100 years ago we would have been supposed to hate eachother & to kill eachother on the battlefield, only because some sick emperors & governments told us to. It would have been our duty to do so. They were spreading some false values of patriotism and pride. That was all just wicked manipulation from evil, powerhungry individuals. The exact same individuals who always wanted us to hate & fight eachother. Just the thought of me on one, and my good friend Charles on the other side, trying to kill eachother, yet thinking that we are doing the right thing, leaves me so sad. All those young people who could have had a bright future. All those people killing eachother, yet could have been best friends. Their fates destroyed by someone determining their future. It doesn't matter if they were German, British, French, American, etc.etc.etc. NOTHING! NOTHING good from wars. War is the worst thing that happened to humanity. DOWN with the ones who are trying to control/sacrifice others for their selfish reasons. I have nothing but CONTEMPT for those who are trying to spread conflict, all the emperors, governors, etc. who are responsible. I hope that after 2 WWs we are finally smarter and won't try to harm eachother anymore. No more brother wars. No more wars. Sending my love to all my brothers and sisters. Always keep on forming your own opinions through experiences and always think critical.
