Good morning Pete, I see this video is a year old but I just wanted to say you did an outstanding video. I enjoyed watching it. You are definitely a very knowledgeable welder. I've been in the trade 43 years as a certified welder and I have a degree in welding tech and industrial fab and everything you're saying is true when it comes to this process. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks for sharing it. Mike S
Thanks for the informative video. I think it would be best to let cast iron cool as slowly as possible vs quenching in water to avoid cracking. Keep up the good work!
Thanks again Professor Pete (No sarcasm intended, BTW) . great informational and practical video as always. You are an absolute wealth of information and are seemingly always adding more depth to the trade every video. Unbelievable! Thank you.
Pete, I appreciate you, and Jody over at Welding Tips and Tricks, and Wyatt Swaim, and Bob Moffatt on Weld.com. After 10 years in engineering school, I realized, I don't know jack. It's nice to have old-timers like you guys work through things like this so we can see what's up.
Thank you for the video, BUT I do not like the idea of quenching a cast iron piece. I would have buried it in sand and let it cool down very slowly, quenching sounds offhand like a terrible idea.
Wow great video's.... I have the opportunity fix up an old Charch Bell.... I'm not to sure on how to go about doing it? Would Tig be better or Brazing? Thanks keep up the good video's.
Why not just tap it and put a pipe plug in the hole. lol I said, but I still want to watch this video because I'm only interested in the silicon brazing part.
You make it look so simple. Great information.
Practice, practice, practice

Thank you Mike

That's a good point, you should let it cool.
Thanks again Professor Pete (No sarcasm intended, BTW) . great informational and practical video as always. You are an absolute wealth of information and are seemingly always adding more depth to the trade every video. Unbelievable! Thank you.
There is always something to learn, thanks AL

Holy crap, I'm an ole timer.....damn!
Weld turbo flanges on cast iron manifolds for a single turbo LS 5.3 . Thanks in advance. Always thankful for your videos.
Now you're talkin'
Welding tips and tricks is a good channel
Thanks Aaron
Yeah, he did a good video on walking the cup. Bob Moffatt at Weld.com did a nice series on gas welding.
When you welded the oil pick up to the oil pump was that MIG welding or what?
I did use a MIG on that
Pete's Garage I didn’t know you could weld cast iron. Anything special I need to do?
Not really. Just don't heat it up too much
Can I back-shield a stick weld by crushing up an electrode and putting the flux on the back of the joint? Or am I just wasting electrodes and time?
Yeah, that seems like a lot of work and waste of electrode for an easy weld.
Is that strong enough to hold together?
I sure is
Thank you for the video, BUT I do not like the idea of quenching a cast iron piece. I would have buried it in sand and let it cool down very slowly, quenching sounds offhand like a terrible idea.
You are right
"I dont like to weld on empty stomach" :D :D :D Great advice! Point taken. :D :D :D
Wow great video's.... I have the opportunity fix up an old Charch Bell.... I'm not to sure on how to go about doing it? Would Tig be better or Brazing?
Thanks keep up the good video's.
Thanks Dustin. If it's a cast bell either way will work.
Yes it is Bell metal do you know of a procedure I could follow as this bell is Irreplaceable and don't want to make more cracks?
Either method will work, just let it cool down slowly.
@@PetesGarage What brazing rod would you suggest on using?
Silicon bronze
That was more than awesome - thanks!
Thanks my friend
Lanthanated 2% is also an all purpose tungsten
That's true
Thanks for video, would be great to see you braze aluminium to stainless steel with aluminium bronze filler on ac!!
I've heard about that, but I've never tried.....yet
11:57. Now I'm hungry. Thanks! 13:57 Inspiration for meal.
Gotta have some fun
Awesome video Pete!!! I finally uploaded a video. .
Sweet!
Awesome
Why not just tap it and put a pipe plug in the hole. lol I said, but I still want to watch this video because I'm only interested in the silicon brazing part.
The plug could leak
If you got your certs years ago they expired unless you kept up with them.
That is true
I want to see how to weld magnets to different metals
Magnets cannot be welded. When they are heated to the melting point they lose their magnetism.
Pete's Garage so how can u insert a magnet in a metal without noticing the magnet I've seen products like that
If you tell me which product, I will tell you how it's done.
You mean like the magnet in the flywheel of a lawnmower?
Guns Cars and Digits yeah also there are products that have a magnet that looks like its build into the tool/product
Please. Aluminium and Stakless steel
Ok
So silicon would not be suitable to use in breast implants 😲
I'm not a doctor or research scientist
Ha ha ha, Law enforcement donuts.... Who knew?
They're the experts
Pete you can only make garbage with garbage! Start with the best equipment you can afford!
I agree, that Miller was pretty pricey for what I usually do.
