- AMAZING day of Winter Fishing!!! Exploring a creek I've never fished before, my patience was put to the test as the crystal clear creek was devoid of life the first mile of wading. Exhausted and cold in the 40 degree water, I kept grinding desperately trying to avoid my third skunk in a row. After two fishless hours, my efforts were rewarded and I managed to find the mother load of rainbow trout!!!

Yes, fish can in fact hear you, whether it's your voice, or vibrations caused by movement. There's actually a great video on "keys to catching big fish" which list off all the tactics you should follow when trying to break PB's

You should get a small landing net. I have one that stays high on my back with a small chest pack and the best thing about it is you scoop the trout up. With the barb down on a Trout Magnet, it just pops off and you NEVER touch the trout or get your hands wet. That’s how you winter fish comfortably.

I always use 8lb mono for small brook rainbow trout. Still got the castability and you're NEVER going to break off. If you know theyre super line shy, i use 6 lb fluoro.

When I lived in Montgomery county on Black Rock Rd, Fish and Game would dump loads of trout there at the creek every year. There is always trout in that Creek.

I'm from columbia and I used to fish here all the time its cool that you can catch trout right by 175. I live in Montana now, I actually moved here to be a fly fishing guide. love the videos man keep it up!
can you please fly fish i wish more people did it’s so much more fun. also in the winter they are eating flies that are very tiny and that’s how you will catch more fish the baits you were using were very big that’s why it was so hard to get them to bite.

+1Rod I am an avid fly fisherman and also live here in MD - occasionally you will get a sparse midge hatch and they will rise, but for the most part I have found a midge (preferrably small (size 20 or smaller) with a small bead will work wonders. I have had great days high sticking those around here even on winter days. One time I fished for 30 minutes on my favorite stream for wild browns and caught two 12 inch fish on that midge setup - even much larger trout will take midges.

I am a professional rainbow trout fisherman, you did good. I use joe's flies spinnerbaits and berkley power bait eggs and dough bait and ive caught thousands of rainbow trout this way. Ive been doing it for 24 years

They do sell insulated, waterproof gloves for just this type of situation. Many brands also have slits at the first knuckle of the thumb and forefinger so that you can pull those fingers out for fine work without having to remove the whole glove each time. I've used them and they work pretty well.

With trout. They’re very spooky fish. They startle very easily. Quiet down. You’re being really loud man. And don’t be as heavy footed. My wife and I will go an entire day of trout fishing without saying a word to eachother. You have to be a ninja with trout. Especially in streams because the sound travels in the shallow water. And around 12 mins in the video releasing trout throwing them like that is a no go. They’re very delicate fish. Set them down and let them swim out of your hand. Just trying to help👍🏼. In the winter you usually won't see sign of trout ,unless you see them in the water , due to the cold temps flies using dry flies won't work . In the winter use wetflies such as eggs , nymphs and streamers , while this is for fly fishing you should try it sometime

I’ve Trout fished since I could walk and the best time to catch trout in my opinion is colder weather all you need to do is take a trout magnet or thin plastic worm like a small plastic pink worm and cast above the hole and let it float down into the hole and about guaranteed a bite every time

Interesting handling of the trout. I was taught to just use the thumb and forefinger to grasp the mouth and not handle the body. I don't fish anymore so no biggy but this is food for thought. Thanks.

Sweet film. Ive never used a jig and waxy for trout in our stream. Will have to try it. Winter fishing is one of my favorites. There are two lures Id suggest but its what works in the creeks I fish in the Black Hills. Best lure is a brown trout colored Rapala Floater Size 3 or 5 fished up creek while gently popping while retrieving. Next is the Panther Martin size 2 or 4 in the all white with red circle on spinner. These two lures are crazy awesome for trout. But this is just in the small creeks of the Black Hills.
If your having trouble catching bass on lures in the winter i recomend to just go simple and use just worms on a hook
That's why when I get trout I cast up stream with a worm let it drift and repeat and I usualy fish to keep aka eat the trout there realy good especially brook and rainbows
Try putting a small bobber 2 to 4 feet above the trout magnet. Fun combo and can cast a little further!
I live in Oregon and trout are very common and it's funny to see you freek out about a rainbow trout
I like to put a bobber on and float the bait down stream. Cast like 6 feet infront of trout and let it naturally float past it

NC Bassin' is correct. That fish you caught is a Fallfish. On some Mid-Atlantic streams they grow to 19 to 20 inches. Yrs ago I actually targeted them on fly.
My man mike can go out in the water with some gardening boots and a bamboo pole and still out fish someone with guide gear and 500+ fly rod. That's what I like about him. Technique.
1rod1reelFishing.. when I trout fish I buy night crawlers and half them and use a size 6 hook. Or you can use power baits and spoons and when also fishing a smaller creek like that then won’t bite a night crawlers use a wax worm.

i don't know if you've ever been to the hunting and fishing shows but some of them have pools of trout where you can pay to fish and they are fished very hard so how i catch them is i stand behid the school of fish, cast in front of the trout, and slowly work it back to me and I'll usually catch one in a few minutes.
Heres a tip. If you can get more of those "alien bugs" use those for trout. Hook it in the head. Trout love halgramites. Also nightcrawlers

I try to tell that to people all the time you still can fish and catch trout in winter time. I do it all the time. Matter of fact Friday after I came back from watching Star Wars The Last Jedi the new movie.when it was snowing outside. I was out there in this weather fishing for some trout. Didn't stay out there that long but caught four nice size trout. Three of them were rainbows and the other one was a Brookie. between(( 13 - 25 inch)). Caught them on gulp alive 1 inch minnows. Not that bad for a nice snowing day in winter.
I like to keep the pole low and to the side. Its less likely they will jump that way and makes it so u won't lose many fish
Interesting idea for a fun fishing challenge: Drill a hole in a golf ball to attach both a leader and a main line. Use a golf club to hit the ball into the water and see if you can catch something? Could be fun...
Ok now you've convinced me to do some actual trout fishing, only fish for largies but caught some rainbows on rattletraps before. This looks fun
Mike, try a trout net. You'll be able to pull the trout out of the water without touching them AND you'll be able to show us a little better the trout you caught.
Also, I've been studying how to better fly fish for trout and the trick I've found is the drift. If you cast upstream of where you think they are and drift it down to them it looks more natural.
