  • The journey of a beginner sewist as he takes custom measurements, drafts a bodice block/men's sloper, and sews a muslin for future garment creation. He opted not to make sleeves because he didn't want to -- also (spoiler ahead) the next project is a vest. Why did I write my description in third person? No idea. It amused me. But hello there, anyhow!
Sewing on a Singer 4432 heavy duty machine in stylish black.
Muslin is Sew Essentials Muslin Fabric 36'' from Joann.
    Other materials as needed:
    - Flexible measuring tape.
    - Sewing pins or clips.
    - Two very interested cat assistants.

Definitely, my mom also kept a tin under the sink with bandaids and bandages my sister is almost 40 and still refers to it as the bathroom cookies.

Hi Cody. I'm glad you have success on your first try. Confidence means everything with a newly learned skill. You are doing well. Looking forward to your finished garment now.
Now, with your two chosen fabrics, make sure you take note of any stretch in both fabrics. Make sure the stretch goes ACROSS YOUR BODY, not down your body. And being your first lined outfit, there are some tricky techniques to learn.
I recommend you first try making an item with no sleeves to practice on. Maybe with some thinner cotton fabrics, you will need to line up seams together at shoulders and side seams. For the neat edges, you will need to sew the lining fabric and the outer fabric together, right or outsides together, then press your seams to one side, turn right sides out, flatten your seam edge and press seams. From then you sew that pattern piece as one.
Of course, if you want your garment to be completely reversible, there are more techniques to learn and more excrutiating turning of fabric to right sides out. But don't tackle that yet..
    Great work so far.

Wow, your progress is amazing to me. I’m new to sewing, a few months longer and I’m still on beginner projects. Cornelius has inspired me as well. Enjoying your videos and creation.

Thank you! Still working on the basics myself. Finding a lot of joy in the creation and learning process. 😄

My sister still gets upset when there are sewing notions and not cookies in the tin😂. Great job on your muslin.

Thank you! My mom used to pull the same thing on me. Happy to pass it on to the next generation, hahaha.

You made way less mistakes that I did first time. But you should never cut corners because it just leads to mistakes later on than are harder to alter!

Hi Cody I have been sewing for 10 years but have only made quilts and small projects and never gone near a clothing pattern.

I’m so envious of quilters! I hope to be able to pick that gift up one day.

Thank you! Yeah, I definitely have some privilege there. Most fem aiming bodice blocks have darts and such and oooh, outside of my abilities to tackle those just yet.

Wow very impressive. To answer your question, you need to ask yourself about how your body will react to the fleece. Are you naturally cold or hot in nature and is your skin sensitive to certain materials. I would say it a personal choose and you would be the only one to answer your question. Can't wait to see what you choose. Have fun sewing🪡

I don't want to be the insufferable know-it-all, but: it would have been easier to buy a commercial pattern, make a block then anything can be adapted. See the closet historian's youtube chanel to understand drafting concept. I would suggest readers digest complete guide to sewing. I believe the older versions are better than the new publication mmy copy is 46 years old in tatters and still used. I think it's great you are being so adventurous.
