  • On "Speaking Freely," Edwin Newman poses questions to James Brown (Eddie Murphy) about his style, his career, his becoming political in the 60s and 70s and the waning influence of soul music. Brown only responds in song lyrics. [Season 10, 1984]

I had this episode on tape years back. He did a lot of sketches that night and one of them was the Jesse Jackson song, "Hymie-Town". And yes, that was his last LIVE episode. They didn't make a big announcement of his leaving like they do now. He still appeared throughout the season via pre-recorded sketches as they kept it hush-hush out of fear of losing viewers.

I’m the same age as Eddie and I truly remember how bad SNL was right before he joined the cast, they are not joking when they say Eddie single handedly saved this show, I was pretty much done with it. I was on board from the very first season of SNL and having to fill the shoes of folks like Chase, Belushi, Akroyd, and Murray seemed almost like an impossible task. Thanks to Eddie for keeping the show alive, he was the real hard act to follow.
