It was really windy there on Friday, had planned to paddle the full Lake but with a 2ft swell, it was canny scary, se just went up the river derwent as far as I could get👍
It’s a ukhammocks underquilt. Unfortunately ukhammocks is gone now so you can’t get one, however there are a good number of cottage company’s who could knock you one up. If you like this video I’ve just made another like this, but in Scotland instead
John I just looked you up after we spoke on FB yesterday, very bizarre to see your kayak stuff because I’m currently making a kayaking video too, only the 2nd time I’ve done that. Strange coincidence. Also bizarre is that your channel is still sub 1k, because this was excellent. Incredibly good. Enjoyed it, full of info.
Hey thanks, you’re very kind. As it happens what we were talking about yesterday would have been perfect for this video, as a transition between the days. The sub count is probably higher than I deserve tbh, I see the retention graphs and I need to really work harder, but thank you! Thanks for checking my work out 💪
@@TheGrayExplorer nah, stuff like this is awesome. It’ll end up being closer to 200% from me because I’m going to revisit to make some notes and hope to make the trip some day
I’ve never been on a sup so my advice will be rubbish. However a couple turned up on a sup with there dog had a wander around and left. If your kit was small and light I would say it was doable. Depends on how much weight your sup can float and if you can get the combined weight of you and your gear below that limit. Try and it and tag me in it mate!
Wild camping isn’t legal anywhere in England now, but I’ve camped there 3 or 4 times at my own risk. I find the general rule of thumb is don’t act a d*** and you’ll be fine
Hi, great video. Is it possible to get to the island using one of the small 2-person motor boats you can hire or would you have to be on a canoe/kayak or similar? Thank you
Totally get there on a hire boat. Youd not be able to spend the night, I think I mentioned in the video they don’t hire overnight. But there’s plenty of landing spots to get into it. Have fun
@@TheGrayExplorer Thanks very much for replying. Really appreciate it. I'm an author and have just started a new series set near Derwent Water which involves someone going to the island, ideally for a quick trip, but didn't want to put a hire boat and somebody leave a bad review saying it wasn't possible!
@@jessicaredland6904 you can’t land at the north of the island either, the lake bed is super shallow there. I spent a good couple of nights there if you need more info just give me a shout
Awesome going for a camp there this month
Have fun!
thank you for this beautiful place
Provided by Nature. Hopefully it stays beautiful
Nice one mate, I'm local and off there this weekend now that the weathers cleared.
Have fun
Videos just get better and better John.
Thanks!!
Nice find. Quiet camping
Hopefully you’ll get the chance to try it yourself 🤞🏻😃
Brilliant, I really want to try this...I have all the gear, including kayak... just no idea😅 so these videos are very helpful
You can do it!
Really enjoyed this & so thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you got something from it :)
really informative video just what i was looking for, thank you
Glad it could help
Nice video John would be nice to see someone show the places to launch from. Thanks for posting
+tony allen I did mention and show it in the video? Near the end?
Loved it... Get back upto Scotland... Loch lomond has lots of islands to camp on 💪👍
I’ve got a video on the channel about a couple of them 😅👍🏻
Also the price of frikken diesel at the minute 😬
@@TheGrayExplorer absolutely agree...travel is really expensive.
Great video john. I was up there on Thursday night in my hammock, had the island to myself.
It’s a lush spot. Storms have hit it hard though, loads of downed trees

@@simonwilliamson3068 yeah, it’s wide so I can imagine the swell. Loch Ness was the same, proper scary
Love the setup! Which underquilt is that? I'm looking to replace mine as its my old sleeping bag with the hood removed 🤣

This is class mate 👏 👌 👍
Thanks darty lad!
Great ‼️
Thanks
Looks amazing.
How far away in kayak approximately is Herbert's Island from Keswick or where approximately is a good place to launch from please?
Launch point is in the video. nearer the end, its about a mile paddle? 30mins?
This is epic! 🌟🌟 We might try and give this a go! You mentioned SUPs, reckon you could do it on one?

Thank u enjoyed that. From Crows Park to the island by canoe how long to paddle ish ?
It’s at best 2km, but the scenery just makes it feel like a 2minute trip

Nice video, is there any birds nesting on the island?
Not on that island, but the other islands are very popular for nesting.
Catapult? In US that is a “sling shot.” Good to see someone else taking their coffee seriously.
Yeah massive coffee fan, instant is ok, but when you’ve got no weight restrictions you may as well bring the proper toys
Can you actually camp there? I've read that you're not allowed.
Officially no. I’ll leave it at that
Isn't the Island private land?
No it’s owned by the national trust
