It depends on how much gain your pedal has. For pedals I usually use a super clean channel with the least amount of gain possible with the treble bass and mids at 12 o'clock and the put the pedal in front of the amp. Depending on your pedal you might need to dime the distortion knob on the pedal. As for the eq I generally go for a balanced tone usually bass at 12, mids at 10 or 11, and treble at 1 for cut. Check out my other videos on distortion pedals to help you find a good setup. Every pedal is different so it's hard to tell you what to exactly do with your setup.
I think that the mg 10 is a great amp for a beginner because a beginner needs to focus more on their actual playing and less on fiddling with their different amp settings.

Thank you I'm glad you found my video helpful. Both this amp and and Orange will work well for heavy songs especially if you throw an overdrive in front of them. Oranges are a bit fatter sounding on the low end and Marshalls generally have a more balanced mid friendly tone. You can't go wrong with either brand. I use both on a daily basis.

Yeah They're still pumping these babies out like they're going out of style lol. Good to see another old school mg vet here. The older mg's sound better in my opinion because they tend to use cheaper parts in the new ones.

That Jim Root Tele tho! Been out for more than a decade now right! You make the amp sound like it's expensive! Was keen on picking this up but I've read your comment replies and you recommend the Orange Crush 12s Thanks alot! Hope your channel will grow more!
Hey sorry I didn't get back to you, your comment was held for a review a week ago.Thank you so much for the kind words. Thd guitar is fantastic. The Orange Crush 12 is totally worth the money, it has a fuller sound then the mg10.
hey dustin! i find this review very helpful, i just have few question if this amp gets shrieky when i turn it very loud or no? does it play well with a multi fx pedal and what is better for a telecaster, this one or an orange 12w or 20w? thank you so much!
It does get a bit shrieky when cranked very loud, I'd suggest a 50 watt or above if you ever want to play with a drummer. It works very well with a multi fx pedal. As for which amp, an Orange or a Marshall, it all just comes down to what you like best. I use both and they are honestly just as good as each other. The Marshall does has a channel switch though to go between distortion and clean and that really helps out for practicing, the Orange crush 12 doesn't so it may be a bit bothersome unless you use pedals for your distortion.
Hey, i was wondering if the amp comes with a cable for the guitar or if I have to buy a separate one, which cable should I buy if I need to buy a separate one?
Thank you, I'm glad you liked my demo. I actually like the Katana mini more then this amp. It has more features, has a better sound, and it's portable.
Thank you! They are all exceptionally good amps and the differences between all 3 are very small. If I were to buy one of the three today though I'd probably lean more towards the Orange Crush because they sound slightly better to me then the other two amps.
"keep your neighbors happy" - unfortunately that's very valid. They don't appreciate the decent sound not to mention high gain *voice from the Abyss*. The only thing I like about low tier Marshall amps are knobs, so cool to tweak, they're surprisingly pleasant and heavy to touch and move. Don't get me wrong, just despise whole MG series, I'm sentimental about Valvestate 2000 AVT series tho
I like Mesas and low end Marshalls because you don't have to crank em. The tube Marshalls from my experience always need cranked I talk about it more in my upcoming Dsl video.

Hey Dustin. I’m a beginner. Currently looking for an amp for practicing at home. What do you suggest? This, blacstar fly 3 or Orange crush 12? Lovely playing btw.
Thank you! If you're playing at home I'd totally go with the Orange Crush 12. The Blackstar fly 3 is good, it just doesn't have enough grit to put it on par with other practice amps. As for the mg, it's good, it's just doesn't sound as good as the crush amps. Best of luck!
I just bought one here in Brazil for the bargain of 50 US dollars. I have one portable 1W Marshall amp so this is quite an upgrade. But this small amp can rock even without any other devices plugged in.
Hi Dustin, solid video! Thanks a ton for this. Tho I need a piece of advice, if someone likes to play the strokes, arctics monkeys, the 1975, phoenix, nothing but thieves, sza and some of joji’s type of songs. Is it better to get marshall mg10 or vox pathfinder or boss katana mini? Or even blackstar? That prolly compatible with reverb effect / pedal (but lower priority). Thank you! New guitar player who just bought some squier affinity, the price for the amps won’t matter since I will buy a used ones
All those amps are very similar to each other. I'd personally buy a amp you can plug in at home if you are looking for the best tone and travel isn't a concern. I like the MG10 and the Bigger Boss Katanas. I have the Mini and it's good, especially for travel, but it's just not the greatest tone wise.
If you plug headphones in, does the sound only go through the headphones ? Looking for a little one for the young fella but with 2 small kids, really need it to do that and not wake the little ones
Beginner guitarist here. I bought a used one. But the thing is, it sounds more like a bass amp than a guitar amp. The sound is completely different, something along the lines of Motörhead. Is there something wrong with it? Any way i could fix it?
what's the difference between this and a vox headphone amplifer? would the vox amp sound better? does more watts mean it sounds better? sorry for asking a lot i just bought a new guitar 🎸😂
The headphone amp doesn't have a speaker to output noise. Wattage generally refers to how much electric it uses but most guitarist think about in equivalence to it's loudness. The headphone amp or this should sound pretty good overall, it just comes down to if you want to use headphones or not.
@@DustinAlford thanks lmao, I made my mind up and I don't care what the neighbours think about me so I ain't using any headphones amp 😂. I found someone selling a used Vox Pathfinder 10 for a good price (80$) and a used Fender 15CE for only 90$. What do you recommend? Fender's reputation is really making me hesitate 🤔
@@professorwhite7634 I'd probably go with the pathfinder unless the Fender is a 90's amp or older. The cheap Fender practice amps got pretty bad around the 2000s.
@@DustinAlford Ooh i see. Thanks, I was also siding towards the Vox Pathfinder 10. Hello bro . I just bought new marshall mg10 . The sound clean and od okay . But when i connect pedal distortion to amp . Why my amp get noising sound humming . Even i grip the string ,the noise still have . This amp not like my another amp brand CHARD . The noise humming will silent when i grip the string . Can you give some suggestion?
All distortion pedals will have a natural hum to them, if you use one on the distortion channel though you may be getting too distortion layered on. Try using the pedal on the clean channel and it should clear up, if not you may want to lower the gain knob on the pedal.
I'm pretty much confused between this bad boy , Blackstar debut 15E and Vox pathfinder 10 , can you please educate me on the matter ? sorry for the poor grammar as English is not my mother tongue either :-/
They are all very similar and they will all give you similar tones. The biggest difference is that the Blackstar is 15 watts, so it's slightly louder then the other two and it comes with delay as well for cool lead tones. The prices are similar as well. You really can't go wrong with any of them it's really just up to what you like the most out if the three.
Hoping you can answer my question. I just picked up a used one just like yours, but it always has a very noticable hiss, even with nothing plugged in, clean, and every knob down. Is this normal for a MG10CD? Other amps I've owned (not Marshall) didn't have this. Thanks!
I just checked my Mg10 and I don't get a hiss with nothing plugged in and with the knobs down. I do however get hiss when I am on the distortion channel and have the gain past 12. Hiss is normal for this amp but I think you might need to look into your amp's issue a bit further if it is still hissing with nothing in it and with the knobs down. Maybe check for ac hum or grounding loops first and if that doesn't resolve it then I'd personally bring it to a pro to see if it's a wiring issue. Best of Luck!
Hey Dustin, I'm a beginning guitar player and I just bought a brand new Marshall MG10 amp. But when I turn the amp on I'm constantly hearing some sort of 'buzzing' noice coming out of it. When I strum a string the buzzing goes away but after that it the buzz gets back. I don't know anything about amps so do you have any idea how to fix this or if I'm doing something wrong? Thanks
Some buzzing is generally normal especially if you are using the distortion channel. If you are getting buzzing while you play though you may have a grounding issue with your guitar. From your comment it sounds like you are getting normal feedback to me.
As long as you don't need to practice super loud the fly will work pretty well. It comes with delay and the ability to use a battery for travel. The voicing is more focused and modern on the fly as well. I've never played the fly but it seems like the better deal. The Mg is going to be louder, and if you can find one used and for a cheaper price then the fly it might just be a better deal for you financially.
@@DustinAlford I don't need loudness so i guess ill stick with the fly 3..i just need a solid small amp that works well with both clean and od riffs..thank you for your answer, really appreciate it :)
To be honest they are very very very similar amps at very similar prices. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I think it really boils down to which one you just flat out like more.
@@BrisaNunes Yeah the Rage 158 is a much better amp for around the same price and under if you can get it used. I would totally go for that over the MG10 and the backstage.
It is noisier then most amps I've played. I think it's mainly the preamp because I have no problems with it when using an fx unit plugged straight into the cd input. If this unit had a fx loop, using a noise gate through one would completely obliterate the noise. That said all of the other Mg's I've used that were 15 watts and up didn't hiss as bad as this amp can. There could be some earthing issues, but I think the preamp is the biggest component of the noise.
@@DustinAlford how would you compare marshall to blackstar? I'm new to electric and want to get a home amp not sure to go 10watt or 15watt or what brand.
@@rozzer666 Blackstars are a bit more on the cutting edge of technology and more modern sounding then Marshall has been as of late They are both great brands, Blackstar was actually started by a lot of ex-Marshall guys. You really can't go wrong with either one. If you're going to soley play at home anything in the 10 to 30 watt range will be good. For Blackstar I'd suggest checking out their ID Core line, and for Marshall check out their Code amps. The Mg's are all decent too, they just don't come with a ton of effects.
Why 10 watt and not 15 or 20? Is a 15/20 really not an improvement for just a little more money? This drives me nuts, I'm almost certain it's some kind of trend.
Marshall sells a 15 watt version of this amp, though I've never played it so I can't say if it's any good or not. I've played a 30 watt valvestate before and it's a definite step up from the mg10.
@@DustinAlford Ok, that's good to know. People are saying many great artists used 5W's to record albums and that may be true. But in a room afaik they sound tinnier than a regular amp ... hence my confusion. And a bigger speaker in a higher watt combo must mean better sound I imagine.
@@ColtraneTaylor I'm not 100 percent sure how they recorded back in the day but I'm guessing they used low watt so that they could crank the tubes on their amps before the master volume and hot plates became a thing. As for what sounds best in a room I prefer a bigger amp as well. Mic placement is very tricky when recording either a small amp or a big amp. You can get good results with both if you are patient enough with your experiments.
@@DustinAlford I suppose I might get one of each small and big and start placing those mikes. If even the Brothers in Arms album relied on luck for that big sound even amateurs could get results eventually.

Hi, I'm beginner and looking for amp to play at home. This, blackstar id core 10 v2 and maybe mg15. I want to play blues rock, hard rock . Which of these is would be best for me you think? Thanksss
All 3 these amps will pull off what you need to play those genres. I'd say that the Blackstar id core 10 v2 would give you the most tonal options possible. It is probably the best deal of the three. The mg15 would come in second since it has more options (comes with a 3 band eq) then the 10. The 10 is decent, it's just very barebones as an amp.
First, thank you for your answer. I've watched too many videos and I don't know why but the mg10 sounded warmer than blackstar to me. However, everyone recommends id core, so I'm hesitant.
@@suvural9913 If you ever get the chance to play an id core or an mg take it. Based on specs alone the Blackstar slays the Mg, but it can be difficult to judge on information alone.
Not in a traditional sense where you can put effects after the preamp of your amp while still using the preamp of the amp for your main sound. It works similar to plugging your guitar and a effect in to only one side of an fx loop so that you can bypass the preamp and play strictly off the power amp. It's missing the second output needed for it to actually be used as a real fx loop.
That's a tough one. They are very very similar amps. I haven't played the pathfinder but I know it sounds pretty good. The Marshall, I've had it for years and it was well worth the money I spent on it. Given the choice I'd probably go with whichever one looks the coolest to you. In terms of quality and sound they are very very similar.
@@jeremiedsouza6703 The fly is a great amp as well from what I have heard and seen. I have never played it. It has a more focused modern sound to it then the mg. It also can run off of batteries for traveling and has built in delay as well. The biggest difference between the mg and the fly is that the fly is quieter coming in at 3 watts and the mg is the louder of the two at 10 watts.

@@DustinAlford thank you very much! i finally decided to go with the orange 20 as i will be playing with a band, thank you for your time :)

Beginner guitarist here. I bought a used one. But the thing is, it sounds more like a bass amp than a guitar amp. The sound is completely different, something along the lines of Motörhead. Is there something wrong with it? Any way i could fix it?
That's interesting. Maybe the speaker got changed out. Try to get inside it and see what speaker is in it.
Would you rather rock this or a vox pathfinder 10?
I've tried the vox and the gain really doesn't sound great , the overdrive isn't good too
I prefer the MG, I haven't tried the pathfinder yet.
what's the difference between this and a vox headphone amplifer? would the vox amp sound better? does more watts mean it sounds better? sorry for asking a lot i just bought a new guitar 🎸😂
I’m thinking of ibanez ibz10gv2 vs this marshall ? Have tried the ibanez ? If yes how is it compared to marshall 10g ?
I haven't tried it, but if it's Ibanez I can assure you it's probably solid! They make quality.

@@DustinAlford ooooh thank god! Thank you for your reply, I got a bit scared because of the buzzing sound

between the mg10 and blackstar fly 3, which one you think is better overall practise amp?
As long as you don't need to practice super loud the fly will work pretty well. It comes with delay and the ability to use a battery for travel. The voicing is more focused and modern on the fly as well. I've never played the fly but it seems like the better deal. The Mg is going to be louder, and if you can find one used and for a cheaper price then the fly it might just be a better deal for you financially.

@@DustinAlford ok thanksssss a lot!!!! you’ve helped me a hundred percent!
Is mg10g the same?? Or is it worst better
The older models like the one I have in this video are better but the 10g is still pretty decent. The new models have cheaper components to them.
I hear this amp has a lot of problems with hiss. Possible earthing issues? What you think?

Thanks for the question, I bought one of them at the Home Depot and the other at Ace Hardware. I spray painted them both flat black.
Hello bro ,Which one is better mg 10 or orange crush 12 ?
I like them both but I think the mg10 is better for practicing because it has a channel switch and a aux input.
Would my korg r3 synthesizer sound ok ?
so the cd input acts like a fx loop when you plug in your modulation effects?
Not in a traditional sense where you can put effects after the preamp of your amp while still using the preamp of the amp for your main sound. It works similar to plugging your guitar and a effect in to only one side of an fx loop so that you can bypass the preamp and play strictly off the power amp. It's missing the second output needed for it to actually be used as a real fx loop.
