- The 1999 AFL Preliminary Final between Essendon and Carlton is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. Two powerhouses of the competition went head to head for a spot in the Grand Final, with Essendon going into the game as heavy favourites.

Was 14 at the time and remember this as if it was yesterday. Was sitting top deck in the old olympic/northern stand. As an essendon supporter, it was the worst day of my life. Old men were crying whereas i was in shock. Horrible day all round.

It was good for Football overall that the Bombers were punished in this preliminary final.
Reminded me of the 1947 and 1968 VFL Grand Finals were the Bombers were also rightly punished.
There is nothing more just in the sporting world, than delivering punishment to the Bombers.
It's an instinctual game that could have gone either way.
Carlton were 4 or 5 goals in front, then the Bombers hit back in that 3rd term. Looked like the Bombers would run away with the game.
Then Superman put on a Carlton Jumper in that final term and inflicted more punishment to Sheedy's Circus clowns
I seem to remember thousands of bomber fans lining up, at windy hill, to get Grand Final tickets 🤣😂🤣

On Wallis' left at 5:32 is arguably one of the longest kicks to have ever played AFL...you would think he would handball it to him. Nope.
