Hello Shelley thanks for viewing! You made my day hearing from you so glad this helped you, your keeping everything "running" here and your husband is protecting us god bless you!
Thanks for the info that really should be in the manual. I just unboxed a BRAND NEW mower and I knew something was up. I'm so glad I found your video before I started tearing the thing apart looking for an adjustment when it was right in front of me.
Thanks for this vid! Bought a new Toro this week and first mow the self propel was basically nonexistent. Though I had a dud. All I had to do was adjust the cable and voila!
Thanks. 1:20 to 1:50 - that is what I was looking for. I knew there was a way to adjust the cable tension, but failed to identify it on my own. Thanks again.
+captnhuffy Hello Captunhuffy thanks very much and for viewing! Have bought several of these type lawn mowers used where the self propelled was listed as needing repair and it was just that simple cable adjustment that corrected it.
+mountainbikekayak I totally belief it. First world problems are so very difficult for people (sarcasm) Me, I bought mine new, and it was finally time for an adjustment so that the self propel was doing its duty. I like it: I'm very pleased with the variable speed of the "personal pace" design. No more running behind the mower; or walking to slowly on the straight-aways. And as I am not the only one to use it, the variable speed choice offers anyone else their ideal pace without hassle.
Just got one of these along side the road and it runs well but doesn't drive. Going to try this fix tomorrow. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!
I remember I found one of these alongside the road by my house. I got it for free and the personal pace wasn't working at all. Engine ran perfect and even had a new air filter. I did the same thing you did in this video and the personal pace worked perfect. It's amazing how wasteful our society is.
+Drax Gretzky Hello Drax Gretzky thanks for viewing and glad this helped, its a big difference in just a little cable adjustment how that self propelled will be like new again.
Thank you so much for posting this! You saved me a ton of money of either taking it in for repair, replacing a good belt or my wheels. This did the trick 😁
Great video I just bought this machine used, and I feel I was pushing more the mower than using the self propelled, specially in a hill, I will do this when I get home. Thank you
Also check the pulleys on the motor and self propel gearbox sometimes grass gets compacted in the groove of the pulleys and the belt won’t “bite” or seat into the pulleys
I have been having problems with my 20056 Personal Pace. I was getting weak pulling from the mower. After viewing your cable adjustment tip, I tightened the cable and it pulls like new. THANK YOU!!
Hello Jeff thanks for viewing great job! That adjustment you can do at least several times before having to just replace the cable. Glad this could help in a small way to get your self propelled back working as new again!
Thanks for help with self-propel adjustment on the Toro. I have a newer model: 21472; Serial # 409 511 066. The cables are there, but it is not clear how to adjust them. I haven't found the self-propel adjustment for this model on RUclips. Any suggestions? Thanks
I just tried to replace the cable but the self propel replacement cable (Toro Model 20086) which appears to be the correct one does not have enough coil around the cable to tighten down on at the adjustment bracket. I’m at the very end of the upper end of the coil and while there’s tension, there isn’t enough to engage. Any advice on that before I take the cable back to see if it’s in fact a wrong one and not too long? Thank you in advance for any advice in this.
My Toro is a recycler type brand new. Practically drags me around the yard. It pulls so hard that I can't keep my mowing lines straight. How do you adjust it to slow it down?
Thanks for the video. I had replaced the belt and was not sure what to try next. I tightened the cable as you did, but got the high-pitched belt slipping sound frequently heard from older autos and no self-propel. Do you think I need to tighten more, replace the cable, or something else?
Hello Ryan, thanks for viewing! What model is your Toro Personal pace is it the Model 20333 with the blade engagement feature or just like this Model 20332. The 20333 has 2 belts one to engage the blade as well as the self propelled. If a Model 20332 is there any excessive slack remaining within the self propelled cable that was adjusted. That cable could need to be completely replaced if its stretched beyond adjustment, that could cause it to slip just not fully engaging. Also make sure all the springs are in place that holds the tension on that new belt you replaced. Get the diagram online from the Toro Parts Manual to see what all the parts that should be in place for the belt and tensioner. Let me know what you find on this right now it just sounds as if the cable needs to be replaced was it also doing the same before you replaced the belt?
My apologies. I have a much older mower (maybe 15 years), model #20017, but it does have just one belt. Mower seemed to operate the same both before and after belt replacement, thus my continued search for a fix. I was pretty certain that there was no excessive slack in the cable after my adjustment and the only noticeable difference was the squealing noise. I do need to check that the spring is connected properly for the tensioner. I think my next step will the replacement of the cable as it has never been done. I appreciate all your help and advice on this and I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again.
+Ken C. Hello Ken C. thanks for viewing yes if that cable is way to tight do just the reverse to see if that will release the self propel engagement. Also check to make sure underneath that self propelled box is not full of debris buildup and has the self propelled lever engaged. Make sure the cable is attached and not broken off on that end engaging the self propel all the time. Good luck with that let me know what you find.
Thank you, this worked! My only other question is: is there neutral setting, or a way to disengage the drive? (Mine is rear-wheel). Or do you have to pick up on the front wheels to move it when off?
Hello Dave thanks for viewing and glad this helped! If I am reading this correctly it should be in neutral if the personal pace is not engaged if that is the same model type as yours. It should roll freely. If not the self propelled is not disengaging. It could very well be clogged with debris underneath your lawn mower where the cable connects to the transmission. You will need to turn it on its side carburetor side up (pull of the spark plug boot for safety) and just look around that area clean off anything wrapped around the drive shafts as well as the area when that cable attaches.
Thank you for getting back to me. It's completely clean underneath. The back wheels do not roll freely unless the personal pace in engaged. I'm also getting a grinding noise when it engages. I've read that that may have something to do with the gears inside the wheels not lining up correctly?
thanks for the post... however, I have replaced the drive belt, adjusted the cable and put everything back together my transmission engages the wheels turn, but it feels like I'm doing all of the work. what is happening?
Dam, wish I watch this before I took stuff apart to change drive wheel belt. Luckily I saw in time before I got to far into it. There is same adjustment under mower for belt that comes from the shaft and spins the blade. Is a smaller heavier belt you may not see under it's cover.
+Jan Garber Hi Jan Garber thanks for viewing if that cable is really tight and pulling down the Personal Pace handle giving it some slack should correct it. If not it sounds if some possible debris preventing the cable from releasing correctly down at the gearbox. Just some cleaning underneath little bit of WD-40 where that selector moves with the cable is also where to look everything should move freely and smoothly for the engagement. Good luck with that let me know how it goes.
Hi. Thanks for the informative post. I was having problems with my mower so prior to viewing your video I went on and replaced the belt. Then came upon your video and made the cable adjustments. Mower is propelling but issue now is pulling mower in reverse. The mower wheels basically continue to move forward creating a tug-a-war scenerio. Any ideas as to how to correct this? Thank you.
Belt wear causes the slack. The more often you keep your cables at the right slack the longer the belts last. The longer the belts last the longer the pulley/pulley guide/bearing/belt housing last.
Thank you for the video. Unfortunately I just changed my belt as the previous owner told me that the existing belt was old and stretched. So maybe your adjustment video would have worked without me changing the belt. Anyway, the new belt only cost me around $10 and 1 hour of my time.
Hello Thomas thanks for viewing that belt can be a bit of challenge so good job changing that. Have bought several of these Personal Pace lawn mowers people were selling with self propelled issues and just that easy cable adjustment got it back working like it should. Where did you buy the belt I got a Toro Model 20333 that the self propelled unit will needed to be replaced and the drive belt $10 is a great price.
Hello Ron thanks for viewing yes that would be just about right for your mower. There is a lot of adjustment in that cable before it would eventually need to be replaced.
Mine is brand new. never started. just got it "assembled. No gas no oil. SELF PROPEL CABLE SEEMS LOOSE AS A GOOSE WHETHER YOU ENGAGE IT OR NOT. That can't be right! ???????????
'pull the cable down' .... means pull the cable and its sleeve toward the mower and lock it in place with the hex nut... Explain that better since most folks who buy or get one do not know anything about adjustments to be made...
So sorry I bought a Toro Personal Pace. First, learned I hate rear-propelled walk behinds. A front propelled walk behind is much easier to maneuver, especially when pulling back, lifting up and sliding around obstacles, etc. Second, the Personal Pace is garbage, I should have listened to my Spidey Sense when the Toro dealer was describing it. A traditional full self-propel is the best (with front propel) and with larger rear wheels. Third, the adjustment for the Personal Pace is a terrible design, plain stupid. And it never really has an ideal setting or adjustment, it either jerks too fast off the start or it never really propels...you end up pushing 99%. Forth, when backing up, pulling back...as you've probably heard, the rear wheels are almost always locked...they say the trick is to quite a bit before you actually need to stop and pull back is you need to fully stop, fully pull the Personal Pace handle up, stop, maybe push it forward again a little to loosen or disengage the propel mechanism, then try to pull back. What a bunch of garbage.
Hello Wx Dude thanks for viewing and your comments! Also have the front wheel drive Toro the SmartStow Model really like it. Front wheel drive is excellent for a flat yard use it in the back yard. My front yard I have a hill and it works much better with a rear wheel drive than a front wheel drive. The front wheel drive will skew as I get to the steepest part, it just want track or stay in a row. The all wheel drive type you mentioned is ideal for a hilly yard. Its a personal preference as well as the yard type. Really like the Toro's have not seen a rear wheel locking problem on the number of Personal Pace I have owned still currently have 3. Sorry to hear you had problems with yours and thanks for sharing your comments to share so others can see as well others experience with the Toro Personal Pace.
Wx Dude The trick is to adjust the cable just tight enough where the mower doesn’t move on it’s own and keep your hands closer to your body and don’t push down on the drive bar but start walking keeping your hands close to your body and walk at whatever speed you want to.
But: if you know how to slow the drive on a 22" recycler FWD ( " single speed" ~ go no go ! I & my knees, hips, ankles, heart , lungs. Thanks for posting this. I just adjusted my mower after 2 months of pushing with no help from the mower. You've changed my life ! Its like brand new.
I was ready to bring my old 20092 down to shop when I saw this video. Why doesn't Toro provide this useful information? Thank you!
Maybe so you have to take it into the dealer to make a buck.

As a military wife I am always fixing things myself. Thank you for the helpful video!
Hello Shelley thanks for viewing! You made my day hearing from you so glad this helped you, your keeping everything "running" here and your husband is protecting us god bless you!
My mower was going to give me a heart attack on my hills. THANK YOU! Easy fix and it is working great now.
Your a god send, after a year of cutting the grass, kicking my ass. It is now a pleasure to cut the lawn. Thank you again!
Thanks for the info that really should be in the manual. I just unboxed a BRAND NEW mower and I knew something was up. I'm so glad I found your video before I started tearing the thing apart looking for an adjustment when it was right in front of me.
Thanks for the video, I spent over an hour trying to figure it out, the tension on the self-propel string.
Thanks for this vid! Bought a new Toro this week and first mow the self propel was basically nonexistent. Though I had a dud. All I had to do was adjust the cable and voila!

+Drax Gretzky Hello Drax Gretzky thanks for viewing and glad this helped, its a big difference in just a little cable adjustment how that self propelled will be like new again.
Thank you so much!!!! Your video was helpful in fixing my Toro. I was doing more pushing than anything before. You’re a life saver!!!
Thank you
Helpful video. Thank you! Got my Toro self propelled running very strong again. Took all of 60 seconds.
Thanks. This simple cable adjustment fixed my self propelled problem in seconds.
This was exactly what I needed to fix the self propel on my mower. Thank you!
Great video and to the point. Some people do postings meaning well, but they take forever to get to the actual repair/point. Good job.
Thank you so much! I was very crazy busy today and could not slow down and look at this! You made it so easy! Thanks again!
+John Grasing Hello John thanks for viewing and your very welcome!
Thank you for the video. It was the exact problem I was experiencing. My mower is now working fine!
Thanks! I watched you video and I fixed my problem in less than 2 minutes!
A thousand thank yous. (Do you have a video on how to inflate a John Deer tire that won't hold air?)
Also check the pulleys on the motor and self propel gearbox sometimes grass gets compacted in the groove of the pulleys and the belt won’t “bite” or seat into the pulleys
Do you have to adjust the tension with the mower off or can you do it with the mower on
I have been having problems with my 20056 Personal Pace. I was getting weak pulling from the mower. After viewing your cable adjustment tip, I tightened the cable and it pulls like new. THANK YOU!!

Thank you so much for posting. Fixed my mower.😊
Brilliant! This is my exact mower and the exact problem. I was about to do a more brute hack on the cable. So easy!! Thank you!
Thank you for the video! It worked and you saved me money and time.
Thank you for this video ! I need to make this adjustment on my Toro as I have had the same problem .
thank you! just successfully adjusted the clutch on mine.
I just tried to replace the cable but the self propel replacement cable (Toro Model 20086) which appears to be the correct one does not have enough coil around the cable to tighten down on at the adjustment bracket. Any advice on that before I take the cable back to see if it’s in fact a wrong one and not too long? Thank you in advance for any advice in this.
Thank you so much for sharing this info. Truly appreciated!
Thank you, this was my exact problem and tightening the bolt fixed it easily! Saved me at least $100 easily.
+Ross Johnson Hello Ross thanks for viewing your very welcome glad that did help!
Two second fix. Thank you
My Toro is a recycler type brand new. Practically drags me around the yard. It pulls so hard that I can't keep my mowing lines straight. How do you adjust it to slow it down?
What is the name of this cable? Is it called the traction cable?
Thanks for the video. I had replaced the belt and was not sure what to try next. I tightened the cable as you did, but got the high-pitched belt slipping sound frequently heard from older autos and no self-propel. Do you think I need to tighten more, replace the cable, or something else?

NEED TO : "SLOW THE FWD 22" ONE SPEED SELFPROPELLED ~~ RUN BEHIND" MOWER?
WITHOUT REDUCING CUTTING RPM?
Have this exact mower...my prob is no neutral...self propel goes right at start...does reverse of this video fix that?
+Ken C. Hello Ken C. thanks for viewing yes if that cable is way to tight do just the reverse to see if that will release the self propel engagement. That was a great fix my morer quit pulling also now it's Miller time😁
Hi Cliff, great info! I didn't know you could adjust the cable tension on these personal pace mowers, good to know!

Will get this fixed asap.
thanks for the post... however, I have replaced the drive belt, adjusted the cable and put everything back together my transmission engages the wheels turn, but it feels like I'm doing all of the work. what is happening?
you are in an alternate universe of time and space ;)
Dam, wish I watch this before I took stuff apart to change drive wheel belt.

There is same adjustment under mower for belt that comes from the shaft and spins the blade.
Is a smaller heavier belt you may not see under it's cover.
If you have the opposite problem & the drive won't disengage would putting some slack in the cable fix that problem?
+Jan Garber Hi Jan Garber thanks for viewing if that cable is really tight and pulling down the Personal Pace handle giving it some slack should correct it. my propel works but I cannot pull it backwards
Your cable return spring needs looked at too . It's the big spring ON the transmission.
Thank you.
+DUANE "BLACKMQQN" Did you try backing off the adjustment a bit?
Yes and that got the job done. Thank you sir. I was about to pack it up and take it to my nearest service center which i not around the corner.
Didn’t work. Replaced belt. Still doesn’t work. Ideas?
Belt wear causes the slack. The more often you keep your cables at the right slack the longer the belts last. The longer the belts last the longer the pulley/pulley guide/bearing/belt housing last.
Thank you for the video. Unfortunately I just changed my belt as the previous owner told me that the existing belt was old and stretched. So maybe your adjustment video would have worked without me changing the belt. Anyway, the new belt only cost me around $10 and 1 hour of my time.

Thank you, just what I was looking for, good clear explanation.
Hello John thanks very much and thanks for viewing as well!
Dangle?
was just getting wrench out to try it. will ck out the cable.
thanks for info. will let ya know
Thank you very much good sir!
So, thats about a half inch of slack?
Hello Ron thanks for viewing yes that would be just about right for your mower. There is a lot of adjustment in that cable before it would eventually need to be replaced.
mountainbikekayak nice mowers toro
So, where can I pick up the charger plug under the key. I tore it off on a chain link fence. I surfed all ebay.
Thank you, worked like a charm.
Hello Creyn266 thanks for viewing! Great job making that adjustment makes that self propelled system like new again!
Every time he says self propel, DRINK!
THANK you MUCH. easy FIX.
Good deal my friend, thanks.
great mowers ! thank you !
That's what self propelled means - you do the self propelling😅
what time does the information we need start? this all bs..

Thanks man
Excellent. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the info!
Didn't have a decal neither!! very odd
Thanks for the video, get to the point though
You da man👍👏👍
Thanks. Helpful...but SHOW how it's connected up top. You kept just showing the cable lol. My cable popped off.
Just replaced my cable. It’s a 7/16 nut not 7/8.
'pull the cable down' .... means pull the cable and its sleeve toward the mower and lock it in place with the hex nut... Explain that better since most folks who buy or get one do not know anything about adjustments to be made...
YeSir.u.The.Man...
Bolt ? The 2nd time you called it a nut, the 3rd time you called it a bolt again. Strange....cause it is a nut.
7/16" nut/ bolt 🤫
Wx Dude The trick is to adjust the cable just tight enough where the mower doesn’t move on it’s own and keep your hands closer to your body and don’t push down on the drive bar but start walking keeping your hands close to your body and walk at whatever speed you want to.
