‘Putin’s Yacht’ as the locals in Marina di Carrara call it. Motor Yacht Scheherazade is a 142m Superyacht that has many links to the a Russian President, Vladimir Putin and was arrested by Italian authorities in 2022.
The yacht is still crewed by some British mariners including her master (captain) despite those links to the Russian president who invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The captain claims the yacht is not owned by Putin despite previously allegedly telling interviewees the yacht was owned by a ‘Russian politician, who goes as high as it gets’.
Since her arrest the yacht had been lengthened by 2 metres with a stern extension with a cost probably around $6-10 million dollars, and is now having further modifications carried out despite her arrest. The work is being carried out by @the_italian_sea_group
The Italian Government has refused to give any details of how this work is allowed because of the yacht’s arrest.
Now in our latest video, we show the yacht is having more work, more modifications with an approximate cost of another $5-10 MILLION.
If you are really interested you can the Navalny team's video here (it's Russian but with English subtitles)

The boat has been in the drydock for a very long time. Generally, in a repair yard, the most valuable piece of real estate is the drydock. The general objective is to bring a ship into the drydock, do whatever work is needed, and get it back into the water.
How much work has the shipyard turned away while Putin's yacht sits in the drydock?
I spent my career working with large tankers. I am familiar with drydocking and repairs to tankers. I have no experience with super yachts. I am extrapolating my experiences.

I’m pretty sure the reason why that shipyard is working on that yacht now is because of the fact they’re gonna turn around and sell it at auction because it’s been sitting there for years taking up valuable real estate so you should dig into that that it looks like they’re just fixing it up so that they can get as much as possible at auction just like they did to several other yards. They sold them when they were seized.

@@Bewilderdashed11Actually that makes perfect sense. If the yacht belongs to a sanctioned Russian then that individual is now spending money on an asset that he will be unable to claim in the short or medium term. Arresting a boat is an interesting legal process and potentially if the vessel is not maintained then the arrestor is liable for all damages from lack of maintenance and kids of use of the vessel.
So in this case the Italian authorities do not pay for the upkeep whilst the owner continues to pay an Italian workforce. Seems a good win win situation. It also ensured that the owner's pot of money reduces.

"Maintain it in the condition it was it at time of arrest". That condition had ship under contract for modificatiosn by shipyard, so easy to see why the arrest would include continued work to complete the work. Quite different from ship being arrested at a marina and then sig a contract for modifications after arrest.
Also, the shipyard would be the injured party here if the work were not allowed to be finished if the contract had mobilised workforce and facilities like dry dock for a certain period and cancelling that contract did not guarantee these workers and facilities would find work of equal pay/profit and might instead remain idle while they look for other customers. What is surprising though is that the fancy row boat didn't complete the work asap. Curious if there were in fact 2 separate contracts 2 years apart and because of arrest, the second paint job scheeduled for 2 year after lenghtening was not part of the same visit. Otherwise, you would have expected the work to be completed as soon as possible and then leave the row boat parked in a marina somwhere.
I assume ship's upkeep is much less expensive while in shipyard? Might be a reason the Italian goverment is happy to see work take longer than necessary since they wouldn't have to pay for full crew for upkeep.

And the Italian authorities as well as not paying to maintain the yacht also ensure that they cannot be held responsible for any lack of maintenance.
Arresting a vessel is complex if the original owner proves that they were the injured part then it becomes quite expensive.
Tracking the owner to the satisfaction of the courts might be incredibly difficult if not impossible.

Hello. I'm new to the channel and must say the content is excellent.
Here is some information to better understand the wrapping and painting. I'm a former coatings inspector for oil and gas, so here is some terminology and explanations.
The wrapping is a "habitat" to encapsulate the areas to be prepared and painted. This creates a microclimate round the surfaces to be coated and permits control of the "environmentals" that must be correct or within "specification" for the coating procedure. The units hosed into the habitat will be for HVAC rather than pure extraction and they may even be dehumidifiers.
Given the nature of the coatings used, the solvents and volumes involved usually require painters to wear air fed respiration. The habitat encloses these materials and helps keep out contamination.
Painters have to exist in a further safe for human personal environment within this one.
When the paint is applied the R.H of the air has to be maintained in a suitable band for the coating to prevent condensation on the prepared surfaces and to permit solvent evaporation at a safe rate. As solvents evaporate they take the place of water vapour in the air and cause a rise in the R.H. eventually they would be unable to evaporate and would become trapped in the coatings. This leads to a requirement for dehumidification. Too low R.H and solvents flash out or the coating dries too quickly which also leads to failure.
Most of these coatings are two component paints that cure chemically. Therefore temperature is important as well as control of the solvent release.
Further to this given the size of the project it is possible that the surface preparation is slightly ahead of the coatings as it is unacceptable to prepare a surface for coating and then leave it uncoated for days. The habitat helps contain the preparation contamination from the clean zones.
More than one coating application may be required and overcoat times must be observed. Being able to regulate the temperature aids greatly in making this happen to the expected timeline.
I would suggest that a few million € is not unreasonable for a vanilla paint job and antifouling.
All the best for the channel.

To my mind, it makes perfect sense, even if, and especially if, the money comes from Putins pocket, that means it’s money he doesn’t have, on a yacht he can’t get at, but keeping who knows how many yard staff, suppliers and ancillary staff paid, the yard working and the vessel ready to be sold in tip top condition to the highest bidder at a handsome profit to both the Yard and the Italian government. That’s my take on it.

I believe the fact that Italian shipyard jobs are secured by this work is the main factor in the governments decision to allow it to be done. This is money flowing into the country and they are ignoring the legal status of the yacht, with graft also possibly at play.

From my point of view, all these vessels should not be frozen, but to free up space for others, and make life better for dockers, force the owner through a friend of theirs from a neutral country, to take away the vessel itself. If this magnate has had the opportunity to do work on the yacht, once the work is finished, he can take it away, and then perhaps after receiving the expenses, return it to the real owner in international waters, or in the Black Sea, anchored in Rostov

The owner is listed as a Russian billionaire, not Putin. Lots of ridiculously wealthy people put their assets in other people's names (for obvious reasons). One could well argue that it should be illegal in any case.
If it was legal to seize the assets of heads of state who lead their contries into war. Most would be pennilies - not least nearly all US presidents and many UK and European heads of state too. Selective use of the law, or random application of the so called 'rules based order' should be illegal.
What should also be illegal is spending millions of dollars/pounds/whatever building ridiculously large useless boats which are a complete waste of resources.

Come on, now. You're old enough to know that the government doesn't hold itself to the same standards it holds its people. The government can make an exception for itself. These sanctions have not been hurting Russia, but those that have sanctioned Russia. If the Italian government gives itself an exemption so that the Russian owner can maintain (and improve) the yacht so the government doesn't have to, what harm does it do? The Russians can't use it and the Italian government doesn't have to pay for it. *_IF_* government employees were smart, they would have allowed _every_ sanctioned/detained yacht to be maintained by the owners while the sanctions are going on. It's ignorance and arrogance by the government to state they're going to take care of these without being affected.
